Starting woes

Well after trying everything suggested on this site I still had starter woes. Well problem solved I took the Valeo starter too bits, as soon as I pulled the end cap I realised something was amiss. The spring that holds the brushes in place was badly burnt, this could be due to the total lack of any insulation on top of the brushes causing them to short out! You can imagine the state of the com a quick brush up and all was well, it almost started before we hit the button! Worth checking guys

Mac, you just cleaned it and reassembled? Some lube anywhere?

I wouldn't lube my commutator.......

Cleaned it and made sure there was insulation between the spring and the brush. It is not easy to get apart because they have riveted the body on, but they are very soft rivets!

I took mine (and the solenoid) apart and cleaned and lubed it (not the comm., the other end) because of the screeching that had developed. It stayed quiet for a while, but is screeching again now.

bfg,

I assume you lubed the drive gear and the shaft it slides on? What kind of lube?

And, Mac, did you replace the insulation with something? What did you use?
