  1. Actually I'm sitting in a cosy flat above Ascona, looking down over Lago Maggiore, I have the time for comments... What I'm saying is that without these restrictions this engine would definitely be equipped with the same air box as it is now. Because it performs better with it. You could always get performance kits from the factory or from such pros like Scola and others, consisting of camshafts, head jobs, crossovers, high flow mufflers, ECUs or maps. They always stick to the stock airbox, with snorkels even. Did you ever wonder wether a silk smooth running engine after an air box mod could be just a symptom of an engine running rich and lazy? Edit: The last time I read about wonder holes and such was some years before you bought your Scura, so when I mentioned them it had nothing to do with you directly

  2. It's still a 2 valve low camshaft engine, quite the same as it was already in the 60ies last century, so thinking this air box could be choking or restricting the power output in any way is rather unreasonable. Of course, you'll always have people reporting about covers with magical hole patterns having magical effects on rideability and power output from idle to red line and the like, but hey, that's what the forums are invented for.

  6. Not to drown the site with my posting, but wanted to try and keep the questions somewhat segregated by topic.... in this case, i’m Wondering if anyone knows what the secret handshake is for the candy-apple red guzzi paint color in the ‘02? The champagne color was largely unobtanium, so hoping the red is better. and, this lemans has a couple sport mufflers, off an ‘01. I like them (nice sound, and look ok), but one of them is dented. Anyone have one laying around to sell?

  7. Docc, that says 2.9 rotations of the engine for one at the tyre. We call that a long one. 4.7 at the engine for one at the tyre means a short one. The definition works the other way round. One turn of the crankshaft can move the bike a long distance - or a short one. But the figures above are for the rear drive only. The chain goes from the crankshaft through the gearbox through the rear drive 'through' the tyre radius resp. circumference. Check the manual, it gives overall numbers.

  8. I know a handful of guys reporting very good results with LiFe cells/batteries, though others had them burning (one) or suddenly gone dead (also one). I don't know what they did to theirs or what quality/money they were, fact is that this cell type is great and a good alternative to a Hawker. The problem is, you cannot get them from Hawker, you're bound to what comes from China. I think it's called YMMV ...

  9. Yeah, it is odd. But as mentioned a shorter gear is a higher number and a taller gear is a lower number. Another aspect to the math is how the gear ratio works. In a sense the gear ratio in the rear end is multiplying the power output from the transmission. So a shorter gear being a taller number is actually multiplying the power output from the trans more, any given amount of power multiplied by 4.7 is going to be more than the same power multiplied by 4.1. So while an EV with the 4.7 gear set in it will not have the higher top speed of the same EV running the 4.1 gear ratio it is putting more power, more acceleration down to the pavement at the rear tire.

  10. Thanks, I’ve messaged Don thru the website, if I don’t hear from him, I’ll give a call.

  11. A "taller" rear gear (lower/smaller number numerically) decreases revs in each gear (for a given road speed), lowers revs on the highway, increases MPG and makes for less aggressive take off. A "shorter" rear gear (higher/larger number numerically) would be the opposite of all those, and what I want. The gearing on the EV is absurdly tall and could use to be shortened for better take offs, and being able to actually use 5th gear at legal speeds. It reminds me of some wide-ratio 3-speed car transmissions from back in the day. Sporty, the gearing is not. VT4L

  12. Question: the rubber nipple/caps on the throttle body housings are cracked. Both of them. I assume that’s for the vacuum measure/attach (?), and if so wouldn’t that cause some less-than-ideal running if some air can get in? was thinking of swinging by Napa and grabbing a couple new caps.

  13. The 2000 will have 2 relays in series feeding the headlight, Start relay Normally closed and Headlight relay Normally open, the Voltage reference is tapped into the wire part way along the tank so its subject to the Voltage drop I mentioned. You will see this if you measure between battery Positive and the Black wire of the regulator The previous owner may have upgraded the regulator already. If it still has an ancient Ducati Energia regulator definitely add a ground strap from the regulator to an engine bolt and consider a method of eliminating the Voltage drop. On the other hand the starter wiring on these early models should never have a problem, the start relay is fed direct from a fuse. Clean the ignition switch, and change the side stand switch, this model can get very dirty before it starts to drop out the ECU Guzzi Wiring - Simple.pdf

  14. Have my multi/voltmeter, part of my Italian travel tool kit. And once my amazon pkg arrives at hotel Wednesday, i’ll Have my powerlet-to-usb-and-voltmeter as well. I brought an sae version of that, when the PO said he had a battery tender lead, but what he didn’t note was that he had done a (nice) version where he ran the tender lead to the lower fairing area of “cockpit”, and made it a powerlet lead for power output or for charging. All good, but had to get the other adaptor for that. Have some spare Omrons, and PO had some spare Bosch relays stashed under seat. speaking of no-start, this has the switch for requiring clutch to be pulled for starting, even in neutral, whereas Goldie doesn’t have that. May mess with that this winter, but only if I get around to it. Caught me off guard at first.

  15. Thanks to all so far! lowryter, I think the higher rpm kick is as you’ve alluded, result of adding a good crossover. Goldie goes like a 2 stroke past about 4800 rpm, while this one is fine, smooth, but no obvious punch at higher rpm. chuck- yep, I love the suspension. Goldie is way too stiff, but I wasn’t sure what was considered normal. Foot peg buzz is Tb sync? Interesting. I find on other bikes that TB sync is a less high frequency buzz, but i’ll Give it a whirl when I tune her at home. mikko- that’s what I was leaning toward.... small air/vacuum leak. Easy fix later, and hopefully that’s it. rolf- i’ll pull that connector tomorrow and give that a try! docc- thx as always, in this case for my newb question answer! back to the machine, my ride back to hotel from dinner. Been dodging thunder showers with pure blind luck so far, and i’ll take luck any day! In class here till Saturday eve. Picked up my 30a CB from Napa today, so have that as a spare for now, then will become the primary “fuse” when I get home.

  16. Bob, You might consider getting a brace for the gearbox that bolts the bellhousing to the frame (for Red Frame bikes like yours). This will prevent cracking the transmission case. I am not aware of any factory braces being available but the tech I know in Okla City fabricated some kits (brace + fasteners) based upon fixing my bike. I'd recommend the brace as a preventative measure. Talk to Don at Motiv Cycleworks. http://www.motivcycleworks.com/ You can also research the issue on the forum by doing a search. I think once you read and see the photos you'll understand the risks. pretty bike silver + black.
