Had a great time again! The Tenni broke down on the first day. Voltage reg. Thanks to Eric and Docc and Gary and Andy and Rick for sorting me out to do the fix when she gets home. How'd you fix the regulator?

I counted eleven Guzzis, two BMW motorrad. And a Thunderbird . . . (Not all in the same place at the same time). As for SpineFrames, seven: '97 1100 Sport-i, '00 RedFrame, '02 Tenni, '02 red/grey LeMans, Sctt2525's Ballabio, and a pair of red LeMans ('03/'04) Condolences, Randy. Was very hoping to meet you. So many plans already for next year and Moto Guzzi's centesimo . . .

I always have trouble with these youtube experts when they are going along with a reasonable explanation about stuff albeit basic and then they make a total howler of a mistake or omission. I take the attitude that there is generally something to learn even if you go through 49min and only learn 1 thing. I stopped at 18min after he added up all the spring pressures and got a big number about how much power it took to drive the cam. The reality is it takes a lot less power to drive a cam than people imagine because you're compressing springs. Springs store energy and the energy needs to go somewhere so the spring gives back the energy that's used to compress it. Its not obviously the same amount because everything has losses but it's not the massive loss you might think. I think this needs explaining however he gets caught up in a "big number" for dramatic effect scenario which I find annoying and a bit misleading. Ciao

The noise from gear drives varies depending on many factors including engine harmonics but also mesh clearance cold and hot. I've had engines that wine when cold and have a slight clatter when hot. As the alloy crankcases heat up and the bearing centers that support the gears move away from each other the whine caused by tight clearances dissipates and is replaced by gear backlash noise. depending on many many variables is the volume of noise in hot and cold conditions. I was in the pits back in 1988 at Oran park round of the WSB talking to Robert Dunlop who was riding a Honda RC30 that year as a privateer and hung around to hear it start up before the first race. That was the first time I'd heard an RC30 with the backlash gears removed and it was quite noticeable. Although Honda would have run a decent amount of tooth clearance and relied on the backlash gears a fair amount as it was a production engine system. I owned an RC30 at the time so was interested in what modifications he was running in WSB. The list of engines that have used cam gear drives is like a who's who of brilliant engineering. Manx Norton, bevel drive Ducati, Guzzi V8, ahem...the Guzzi big block V twin and of course the venerable Rolls Royce Merlin.
