  2. Just checked in... that is SOLD to the gentleman with $8,000. And it is a fine looking machine. But it sure makes me feel good about spending a lot less to get this last week: Emphasis on RACER... I can skip the cafe.

  3. News from North It's May in two days. The snow is falling down outside my window, so I escaped the temple, went into my living room and ended up in front of my stereo. I'm spinning a Near Mint 1st pressing of Bobby Darin's Commitment and dreaming of warmer days on the Greenie. I've fed miss Greenie 3,5l of Motul 15W50 today. Gave her a set of new NGK silicone spark plug cables and continued cleaning the headers. Forgive med «fathers» for I have sinned. I've replaced the Air-box with a set of K&N RU-1780. I have read all pros and cons in the forum, and I may regret it. No problem. The Airbox is stored with all parts intact. Even the original ambient air temperature sensor. A new NTC thermistor (3kOhm at 25°C) will be mounted at the front - away from the cylinders. Then I have to check the TPS value and fuel trim/CO with GuzziDiag. Never did that before. Thank God for Decent tune-up!

  4. Always amuses me that the people who want these things always seem to forget that the term is Cafe RACER yet here we are with yet another old T3/G5/SP with a LeMans tank, side panels and a silly seat and it still has the 'orrible 30mm VHB carbs. No point it walkin' the walk if you can't talk the talk. Smallvalve roundfins are a lovely thing but a 'Performance' machine they never were. If you want one to GO as well as it SHOWS you better be prepared to spend money and get your hands dirty. That probably isn't the point though is it?

  5. I had a great ride today up the coast to Jenner ( on the Pacific Ocean ) and back..about 220 miles all in all. Beautiful day and this is a beautiful route once you leave the FWY in San Rafael...on the way up you wind thru Lucas Ranch road and up HWY 1 past Pt.Reyes Station..then at Jenner you cut back east on 116 along the Russian River and thru beautiful Sonoma wine country all the way back to HWY1 Only thing missing was my Scura as she is still in the middle of restoration...But at least I did have my S4RS which runs awesome!

  6. Your Odyssey would have almost certainly been leaking due to overcharging which is pretty typical of the V11 charging system. I've had 2 Odysseys do this due to a faulty reg and the way the V11 wiring is designed. Check your regulator voltage output. Ciao

  8. 36mm PHF's with 36mm manifolds matched to the heads works well enough. Throw in a P3 cam and a set of LeMans advance springs for the distributor and it'll wake it up a bit. It'll still be a 45 year old ditchpump with a wheel at each end but at least it can make some pretence at being more than a dunger. Personally I'd of just left it as a T3/G5. While they won't set the world alight they are comfortable, frugal and charming. They don't have to pretend to be anything other than what they are......

  9. If it was many many..like in the early 70's..when I first went there ,its not the same at all..La Honda its self has very empty..not like in the 70's when I went to the "Boots and Saddles" bar was there and Neal Young used to live behind the building and when he was in town he would come in on Sunday nights, sit at the piano with his little son and play for a couple hours for free.., Alice's is still a good place for decent food and a short weekend ride though. Alices is open every day and night ..but getting too $$$$$ for my blood. Nice trip..I used to ride all those places when I was college age in SF and a little beyond that time..I moved to L.A. for work and then to Hawaii, been back here in the Bay area for 10 years now. My wife grew up in the Haight in the 60's. Those Mini's are nice..I've thought maybe that is what I'll get when my 2 wheel days are over..if they still allow us to drive gas powered vehicles.

  10. Spent 4th July in San Fran and did that drive in a rented Mini Turbo stick. But stayed the night in an motel on the beach near Ft Bragg, went all the way to Leggett, drove in the tree tunnel, and back through Willets and Clear Lake and 2nd night in Napa. Then Robert Mondavi winery and back down to Monterrey, next couple days to Big Sur and tourist-ing. Alice's Rest on the way back. Memorable trip. No Bike but about as close. Mini was a fun runner and had all my luggage. Early morning flight, saw a midnight movie in San Mateo, dropped of the car and rested in the empty airport. Not sure I'd done anything differently. still have the Haight Tshirt I've never understood why anyone backs the bike in a narrow spot while you can ride in and back out into an open space?

  11. IIRC, that Motul (with moly) is the original formulation for the Moto Guzzi V11 "Final Drive Oil." Seems it went "no longer available" long ago? Hence, the common substitution of RedLine ShockProof with its "synthetic moly" . . . .

  12. nice. i admit I tried to fire up the v11 after being sorta - non mobile during the pandemic and she was not having it. Ordered a new battery but I think it may be fuel related...see how it goes. its been a year since I took her out and she needs some attention. but I am also in oakland if at some point you want to do a ride

  13. Just trying to tie the clutch action to the recovery of the running. Can't see the clutch switch having an effect and working the throttle isn't going to recover a cut in ignition or loss of fuel supply. Only thing left is TPS. No guarantee of course. You can buy a new PF3C TPS from CA Cycleworks for $92us Ciao

  14. Great temple Jan, and working place for sure. Room for more bikes, and a Miele for brews. K.N. looks cool, up to you. Just another learing curve with the bike. If you do bouth sides ( correct and wrong ) you know more . And the new snow will kill the old snow. She will run before may. Cheers tom.

  15. That’s the rub with the web. Lots and lots of good information, but once it’s dated you are SOL. I was looking at picking up some tune up parts for my V10 and there was a google link to this post from years ago. I was interested in those stock appearing wires and I thought to update the thread. Finding parts for this old girl is even more challenging then a V11..... Hmmmmm......

  16. @Tinus89 @knumbnutz it was the very first thing I looked at. The symptoms are exactly what you'd expect from a poor contact on the switch. I actually removed it and bridged the wires. Have been running like that for about a year but I put it back in the system a few weeks ago.

  17. +1 on what Phil said, fix the Volt issue first. I changed to a regulator who feeds directly to the battery, no more 30 amp issue. Cheers tom.

  18. Yay, another greenie! I haven't had any issues with the Odyssey batteries myself. I just put the third one in her about 18 months ago, so not bad for a 20 year old bike. ( I know this as I replaced the original Spark 500 back when) My bike has had a Shendengan Reg/Reg for nigh on 12 years though and this plus she gets ridden year round may have something to do with it ? ( Maybe ) Welcome to the nuthouse mate but I see you're well versed in the Guzzi way already ! Cheers Guzzler

  19. A friend has just fitted a LiPo battery in his BMW F800, was impressed by how light it is, compared to a conventional lead acid battery, but he’s only had it for 2 weeks, and I don’t know of anyone with long term experience of how they last. Also would they be more prone to overcharging damage that seems typical with a V11 ? I have another V11 which has a now 6 year old Odyssey that’s still going strong, whereas another V11 seems to have overcharged its Odyssey in less than 6 months. I honestly don’t know if LiPo’s are worth the high price premium. I’m not too bothered about saving a few kgs in battery weight, I could save a lot more myself if I could eat fewer pies

  21. Awesome! Thanks, docc. I’ll give it a try: straight Bel Ray in the gear box and the Motul pre-mix in the final drive. Moto-cocktail! Yum!

  22. This was the final drive oil in a Moto Guzzi bottle that had the moly premixed. When I couldn't get it from Guzzi anymore, I found the Motul product and the specification looked identical. It was my presumption that Motul had provided the product to Moto Guzzi.

  23. Are you 100% confident the sidestand switch and related wiring is good? Because when I put out the sidestand whilst in gear, she dies, however when I quickly enough flip the sidestand back (or the clutch), I can actually prevent her from dieing and it sounds like a misfire or ignition problem.

  24. Yeah, Boots and Saddles, and Apple Jacks, too. That’s funny that you mention Neil coming in at his whim and playing. This was happening back in the 70’s, too, as I remember some people I knew who used to play there complaining that Neil would roll in unannounced and basically kick them off so he could play. A lot of my youthful recreational time was spent running around the Skyline, La Honda, Windy Hill area, parties, communes, the good old days. I imagine the plastic wrapped geodesic domes have been replaced with well-manicured over-priced homes. Kids today don’t know what they’re missing!

  25. That sounds great. I hear the weather’s been pretty nice in the Bay Area. LowRyter: was Alice’s open? La Honda was my old stompin’ grounds, many many many moons ago. Wonder what that little place is like now?

  26. That's the Zard full exhaust. I wrote more details about this bike in the "Show us your Tontis" topic. It's wicked fun and sounds fabulous. [docc edit]:

  27. That looks like a fun ride. I didn't know there was town called Jenner in California... probably will get some attention given our local political situation and Caitlyn Jenner potentially entering the election. And no politics... just noticing a name coincidence. I have ridden bits of that, and especially enjoyed all narrow twisties in Point Reyes. Do you get out the point sometimes? It's so pretty.

  28. @fotoguzzi yes. Mario from Thunderbikes (a Guzzi god in Australia whose name isn't Pete Roper), suggested that one. The wiring goes hard and brittle at the bend near the frame tube and he has had recent instances of broken wires. Mine was hard as rock and I couldn't get a consistent continuity through one of the wires so I really thought I'd finally found it. I invented some new words when it wasn't the problem. Still, it probably headed off an issue that would have raised its' head a little later... The TPS is a only few years old with about 10,000kms on it. Set spot on. Could still be the problem and I'll probably work through a few other things first.

  29. By ignition sensor you refer to the camshaft sensor right? better try a new TPS.

  30. Hey, the GEI may have been better than the Bosch. Which were better relays than the Tyco, that were better than both versions of the Seimans. Then we learn that the G8HE OMRON is heads-and-shoulders better than the G8HN. "Best Relay" is a concept that was derived, partly, through this long thread. Again, thanks to so many dedicated contributors. Yet, we cannot neglect the other significant "hiccup"/misfire/stumble sources. (esp: TPS, CO Fuel Trim, 30 amp fuse failure) . . . Gotta cover all the bases!

  34. Well, it's funny, every time I think, "Ooh, there's a nice V7 Loop Frame! But I'd like another gear. Maybe a bump in the displacement. Disc brakes. More horsepower. A better gearbox. A more rigid frame. Bigger brakes. Fuel injection. Modern wheel sizes. Better suspension. Clip-ons. Rear-sets. Better lighting " . . . I always start with an early loop and end up right back where I am!

  35. So little action here re Aussie roads. I have so few electronic images of riding, most are old printed stuff. Here's a few from more recent times although a bit boring. This is a fairly large water reservoir near home that I visit often as it's on one of my usual country rides. I like to keep an eye on it's condition as its one of the main water supplies for Melbourne. I've seen it looking dismal and beautiful over the years depending on its level. There is a sailing club and a couple of picnic areas around it and a very nice 18 klm long open bushland walk around its perimeter which the wife and I have done quite a few time. Out there is total quiet except for the birds most of the times. Here's the Guzzi parked there a few years ago. My old ST2 parked at one of the picnic areas. Here's a shot I got there on a very still day. Very reflective mood. A trip into the city a few years ago to have lunch with my wife. A Sunday at my local hill climb about 10 min from home. The end of my street. 30 min drive from the heart of Melbourne. Ciao

  37. Two points are paramount, and ultimately far more important than max-lift flow numbers. First, Low-lift flow. The intake valve spends all but a short period of time at less than max lift, and the closer it is to the seat, the more slowly it moves. So 10CFM between .050" and .150" lift is far more productive than 10CFM at max lift. Secondly, port velocity. The higher the velocity, the more air can pass a given opening in a given period of time. To maximize velocity, the port has to be the ... uh ... 'correct' cross section and taper to match the curtain area of the intake valve ('curtain area' is the area open between valve and seat at a given lift). Your port guy who suggests a good valve job is right on the money; getting the curtain velocity up by shaping the valve head and seat can find big gains even without port changes. Where the Guzzi port fails, is that it's already large, to make up for the water-pipe shape; velocity produces inertia, and if velocity gets too high for a short turn, the air separates from the floor and gets turbulent, can't make the turn and kills ultimate volume. The ports on my LMIV are raised, floor filled, and tapered from carb to valve. (Not discussed is venturi effect from the smaller throat to larger valve opening). So a perfect port would simply be a velocity stack with a given taper (I don't know that perfect number) without a valve in it. Modern engines come as close to this as physically possible. Then, RPM, camshaft duration and overlap, compression, and exhaust scavenging all have an effect on intake timing and velocity as well. It's complicated.
