  1. I've really been enjoying the new format of the American Motorcyclist Association magazine with Mitch Boehm as editor. This month, they feature the 50th anniversary of the Bruce Brown documentary film "On Any Sunday." Evidently, it has been remastered and prepared to re-release onto "big screens" on a limited basis. Somehow, I missed this in 1971 and came to the Magic of Motorcycling rather late. I'm guessing many of you know about this epic film already. The closing musical score is moving, of itself . . .

  3. Ok, up and running. I of course adjusted the valves, the exhausts were very tight cold, which explains why it had been a little snotty to start and warm up. My bad, it's probably been 7k miles since last adjustment. Valves aside, the thing started better than ever, it seems, and even 1/2 warm it idles at 1250rpm or so, up from ~1k-ish. Somebody elsewhere said that was their experience too, so there be a rebalancing coming soon. The gears are not as loud as some were hoping, they're pretty hard to discern above the valve clatter. Overall it hits me as far more happy and stable than with the chain (and tight valves). Here's your movie short. Joe's Gears

  6. My Griso 8v and V11 LeMans. Both are amongst the best sporting Guzzi’s of recent years. The demise of the big block Guzzi’s is why I cannot get excited about anything in their current line up. Bobbers and small block Adventure bikes just don’t do it for me I’m afraid .....

  8. I had a spare hugger so I cut the centre piece out and cable tied it to the inside of the swingarm, you can just see it in the pic i think it’s important not to cover the swingarm as I’ve seen a few rusty ones here in the uk due to never being cleaned

  9. Ok, may have to swap it out for green when I can get my hands on some. There was no scoring in the bearing housing the old bearing was toast though. The spacer is an uneven 113mm, a bit bashed up in places, the collar parts are wavy but I think they are non critical.

  10. I really enjoyed On Any Sunday as well. Have it on DVD. Anyone seen the new one On Any Sunday - The Next Chapter? I tried to get it on Bluray but seems no longer available in our region B ( area code for Oz /NZ ). It looks good, Bluray quality picture and Dolby Atmos soundtrack ! Bugger Cheers Guzzler

  12. Here is a link to Malcolm Smith's story on his dealership's website. Malcolm is the real deal. Interestingly (which I didn't know before), he was originally partners with K&N, who went on to form the air filter manufacturer.

  13. In case you also missed it... Bruce Brown also made "Endless Summer." The guy made two of the most iconic action sports movies of all time, about surfing and motorcycling. I think he is my hero. I love those old Huskies that Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen were riding. I saw McQueen's bike once at the motorcycle museum in San Diego's Balboa Park. Malcolm really leveraged his exposure from the movie. His dealership in Riverside still sells Husqvarna. I've heard that his Husky from the movie is (was?) on display there. The final scene, I believe, was shot on Camp Pendleton, in San Diego. Steve McQueen used his fame and influence to get onto base with the film crew. Every dirt biker in San Diego dreams of being able to replicate that.

  14. That said docc, getting one with the crap paint and having it redone would be in line with Guzzi's warranted repair, so cases repainted/powdered would still constitute oem. Fixing a recall doesn't void originality. The key would be to determine what finish was on the replacement cases. Replacement cases were what was offered at the time. I only assume they were the later satin finish. Now there would be some detective work...

  17. Rather than start a new thread, I'll just append to this one. I've installed my Caruso gears, I'll add a sound file if I can figure out how to do that after it's on the ground. I was surprised at how much sludge was in the bottom of the front chaincase. I'm now installing my own Roper Plate, we'll see what the bottom of the pan looks like. Also, I discovered that my cam sensor clearance is...frighteningly close. .002" or so, but with zero witness marks on the sensor after 15k miles I'll not touch it. Whoopsy- imagine my surprise when I actually got the centerpunch and drill straight enough to save the original threads.
