  1. My friends Mike and George went down to Quail a week ago to show off George's Ducati. Mike made a little video about it as he's apt to do. There were a ton of Guzzis down there so I thought I'd share it with y'all. There will be a part 2 to the video that will probably come out next Sunday.

  2. Both coils work together, they both turn on the instant the start relay closes. The "holding coil" is wired between the spade connector and chassis so as long as the spade connector is powered up (Start Relay closed) it's drawing current ~10 Amps. On its own the holding coil will never be able to pull the solenoid in. The "grunt coil" is wired between the spade connector and the motor armature, it will draw up to 50 Amps through the armature to chassis so its potentially 4-5 times as strong as the "holding coil" but only while the solenoid is stroking. As soon as the solenoid reaches the end of travel the main contact closes, now you have +12 Volts on both ends of the "grunt coil" so it's effectively switched out of the circuit. The "holding coil" is strong enough to hold the solenoid in place. While the starter is stationary the armature is effectively a short circuit, the current from the "grunt coil" will tend to start it spinning which generates back EMF but it happens so fast <50 milliseconds it doesn't have time to accelerate. If you get the 50 Amps the solenoid is designed to work with it will stroke in 15 milliseconds. (I have measured this with an Oscilloscope). Of course the solenoid operation depends on the bike wiring being able to feed enough current to the coils, the stock wiring will deliver about 30 Amps on a good day, so working at about 60% of starter design. Another thing that chokes the solenoid down is the tiny wire from the Start Relay to the Solenoid spade connector, it needs to be at least one size larger.

  3. I got one of the first run in zinc chromate green more as a treasure and part of my pledge to support this community whenever possible. MySport was shifting fine, yet when I installed the ShiftExtender I noticed a significant improvement. Plus, it just looks cool-as-hell . . .

  5. This was at the Oregon Vintage Motorcyclist 43rd Annual Show. Not sure if it sold or not but if someone was interested it might be worth a call. Seemed like a decent bike. I took a look over and didn't see anything out of sorts.

  9. Took red out for a spin, with the sun showing itself this weekend, but just rode 4 miles down the local clear-premium gas station. She runs sweet, but she’s wanting to idle at about 800-900 rpm, so i may bump it up. Shop tune vs road test… Adjusted the valves on Greenie. Was musing about why all the locks nut were so brutally tight, then remembered that despite her age she’s only got about 1500 miles, so thats got to be the 23yr old factory valve setting/torque. Not surprisingly they were not that far off. If i was going to ride it hard I’d account/hedge just a little for the break-in, but I just set them to normal specs as it won’t be getting a lot of miles in the near or longer term. Old valve cover gaskets came off in pieces, much of it staying adhered to the cover, requiring some effort and time to get it all cleaned up. And rounded up some replacement M6 bolts for the generator cover. Between work, broken arms, and remodeling projects, she’s coming along slowly but surely… anyone know a good wheel cleaner product? Old topic, but the S100 wheel stuff i have isn’t working on the Duc spoked wheel rims (black rims), and arguably is making it worse. The spoke spacing makes them a real chore to clean and an ideal candidate for a spray on miracle product, if there’s one that will work for that kind of surface, an almost eggshell black.

  10. I haven't had much luck with *anything* I've purchased over the past 10 years. I assume anything new is Harbor Freight, regardless of the label. The Chinese Conspiracy is pervasive.

  11. Throttle body balance today for the “grape ape” at Twiggers in Loughborough. Although they haven’t sold new Guzzi’s for several years, and the retail part of the business is now closed, their workshop is open for repairs & servicing. There aren’t many independent Guzzi specialists left in the UK, and I value being only 15 miles away

  12. Do yourself a huge favour and invest in a battery Voltmeter, these are a simple meter powered by the Voltage its measuring (don't start reading until about 6 Volts). They may not be as accurate as your $400 Fluke but will be within a decimal place and its all relative. https://www.amazon.ca/Digital-Display-Voltmeter-Waterproof-Motorcycle/dp/B09RHC8F1R/ref=sr_1_10?adgrpid=1354598749278790&hvadid=84662606610933&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=5064&hvnetw=s&hvqmt=e&hvtargid=kwd-84662659551773%3Aloc-32&hydadcr=15054_10414350&keywords=battery%2Bvoltmeter%2Bgauge&qid=1652968443&sr=8-10&th=1 Get the waterproof one with the convex surface, I have seen them for as little as $3, buy one of every colour and save on shipping cost, give them away to your buddies. IMHO the best place to wire a Voltmeter is across the park light, that only comes on when the ignition is on and the circuit is lightly loaded, don't chop into the main loom, just wire it across the bulb in the bucket using a pair of small wires chopped off an old phone charger, it will take all the guesswork out of your charging system. On my non VII bikes I just pinch an 18 gauge sheetmetal bracket between the handlebar clamps, drill the large hole with a step drill and polish with a buff. You won't be able to read the display in bright sunlight but just shield it from the sun with your glove or read it passing through a shady spot.

  13. The one that just failed me was Motion Pro..it lasted about 3 years of infrequent use. The one I had before that was Blue Point Digital..I think it held together 1.5 years.... Not like I abuse them..I don,t throw them around..I want them to last..but this last Motion pro has just decided last week to read 9-12 lbs high every time..:-(, The needle wont go back to zero anymore
