  2. Nice! you know your references.. There used to be so-called "gentlemen robbers", who did it in style without any harm to anyone. Those days seem to be long gone. When I look around, I can't help but think that our society has lost a lot of the values we got hammered with at school. I remember that we had "Civic tuition", and were taught how to be courteous with everybody else. I get the feeling there should be more people learning about the healing and peace you get from riding a V11... Lots of unhappy people around!

  8. I wondered who might wade into these similar words . . . Balaclava is the face covering named for the appearance of Crimean War helmets at the Battle of Balaclava, the site of present day Yalta in the Ukraine on the Black Sea. Baklava being a Middle Eastern sweet pastry. Robbing banks with baklava is sure to make friends!

  9. I knew that bike looked familiar. I remember when you got it. Sadly, I haven't seen this baby on the street, being in Tucson. But soon, I'll be representing the V11s in Southern Arizona getting my Scura back on the road. Man, something about these bikes. That "chug." Been riding my CB1100 and my Valkyrie lately. Total opposites of a V11. But the Scura now lives again. I'll be sure to post up the first ride out of hiatus.

  11. Just a quick update folks. The bike is back on the road and have managed to squeeze in 150 odd miles between deluges and can report that the gearbox is smooth as butter (sweeter shift with @Lucky Phil gear lever extension mod at last). No backlash problems, so jobs a good ‘un😊 This bike messes with my head. I only changed the dogs cos I’d got them (but the old ones looked fine) so no real change at all but it is much better than it was….. hmmmmm🤔. Just as changing the plugs which looked fine brought it back to life 🙄 I suspect she just loves the attention😂. Still, I’ll just park that and bank the positives! Ciao

  12. KTM owns GasGas and Husqvarna. So instead of running two teams as KTM they run one team as KTM and one team as GasGas. They wanted a third team so they could run a Husqvarna team as well, but Dorna would not allow them a new team. They were told they can only have a third team if one of the current teams signs up to run their bikes. Weird that a manufacturer who wanted to add another team to the grid was told no. Seems like it would have been good for the sport, and would have helped balance out the four teams running Ducati's. If you buy a brand new GasGas today, it is almost identical to a KTM, so it is more like buying a Lincoln instead of a Ford. We have a pair of Husqvarna's, very simlar deal there. The chassis and engine are KTM pieces, the body work is Husqvarna. The same thing happens in dirtbike racing. KTM, GasGas, and Husqvarna all race basically the same bikes. But it does mean more factory bikes with factory support. So it makes the grid stronger, with more quality bikes for more quality riders.

  16. FINALLY! An exciting race to watch again...that was entertaining. Let's hope Acosta doesn't burn up too fast in his exhuberance and is around for sometime to come. I'm dismayed at how poorly former super star Quartararo is doing these days. Great to see Marc contending again, and the track...a BEAUTY! Time to watch some replays and post race interviews in a few hours!

  20. For all of you cynics the fact is that the Tonti models are very good motorbikes. Not as good as the Aprilia/Piaggio models that superseded them but back in the day, the day being the mid 1970's, but there was a lot of charm in that era. The early 'Short Head' Tonti models were pretty impressive. Sadly, in the mid eighties the 'Market' changed. People, (And I'm mainly talking about you USA!) wanted 'Bigger' motorbikes. Not just capacity but also, more importantly, physical size! Anyone who has ridden an un-f*cked Mk III LeMans back to back with a 'Big Valve', 'Tall Head' Mk IV, V or 1000S would have to be mentally defective to think that the earlier model was inferior to the latter one! That doesn't though mean that the later models, 'Sport' or 'Cruiser' are shit! They are fine, competent motorbikes and the Cali 1100, even with Bill's chunder inducing 'Hot Dog and Mustard' paint job are actually great touring motorbikes! In the unlikely event I ever go back to the US for another tour, (I'd love to, but 'Reasons'.) the fact is with Cali prices being so low I'd be terribly tempted to take a punt on something like this $2.5K shitter, use it for my trip and just abandon it at the airport when I left leaving the title and keys stuffed in the tank and ignition. Or donate it to some charitable agency. It would be much cheaper than hiring or buying a more *Modern* bike. Cheap, pretty bulletproof bike, that you can ride trans-continental for next to nothing! Really, what's not to like!

  24. 157 mV measured across the TPS with the throttle completely closed... Yeah, I know, that doesn't help much. If you are only just starting in on working on the bike yourself, I would suggest looking at these three threads first. I only bought my 2002 V11 Le Mans about 18 months ago, and found them very helpful in quickly getting to a point where I can start to do sensible work on the bike (which needed it, and still needs a bit more...). read that one first, then look at these A tip for getting the tank off: your 2003 V11 should have the "click-on" connectors for the fuel lines. Be careful there: the plastic elbow coming out of the tank is fragile, and about as easy to find as hen's teeth. What helps a lot: pull the plug on the fuel pump, start the bike and let it run until the motor dies. This relieves the pressure in the fuel line, and makes it possible to disconnect as easy as it is possible to get it. To disconnect, push the connector firmly towards the tank, pull the ring back and pull the connector off. PS: mine coughs too. Pretty much as you describe yours. Going through the "decent tune up" helped quite a lot. Further research remains to be done...

  25. This is exactly the kind of traffic rule that we recently discussed with other motorcyclists in Texas. The bill allows motorcyclists to pass stopped cars between lanes at a speed that does not exceed 15 mph. We need this here in Houston and in every major city. The entire city access, surroundings, is nothing but a continuous traffic jam. Allowing motorcycles to move up would certainly help, and maybe inspire some four wheelers to change from 4 to 2 wheels.

  26. I did not know abut Dr. John's mechanical engineering background. From his obituary, linked above: "Studying mechanical engineering at Lehigh University (always with a love of fixing things), he applied his inherent talent and skills to help improve human performance." I am so enjoying the motolitaliane publication, "Dr. John's Moto Guzzi." It is giving me a renewed perspective and respect for his contributions that ultimately became our beloved V11 SpineFrames.

  28. I admire his command on the instrument, but I never really liked his music. I feel that it is not melodious enough. I have the same feeling about Yngwie Malmsteen pick sweeping. This rapid succession of notes is very difficult to achieve, but not for me. Gary Moore in his blues days would really be my favorite. I also liked Danny Gatton a lot. He was incredibly good at keeping an independent bass line.

  30. One item I'll offer, having gone through this last year, insertion. After purchasing the parts and installing with no luck, I disassembled and reassembled numerous times. Eventually it worked, having fully seated. It seems straightforward however I must have not inserted it cleanly more times than not. Since fitting securely, I've had no more trouble. fiddely things, they are.

  31. Reference to the previous thread and replies: While the failed angle drive is usually the one at the gearbox, remember there is an angle drive on the back of the speedometer, as well.

  32. The angle drive is a possible failure point. The gears inside the trans that drive the angle drive are much less likely to fail. You can just connect the cable directly to the output on the transmission. The cable has to make a more severe bend that the angle drive is alleviating. If the speedo works when hooked directly to the trans, you can take the angle drive apart and see what is wrong in it. It can be fixed in some cases.

  33. The Wilburs should be worth retaining if the preload adjustment can be sorted. That is no cheap aftermarket shock . . . I replaced my original Sachs after seven years 49,000 miles/ 79.000 km with the last Öhlins MG127 remote preload unit known to be available at the time (2007). This was part of a strategy to set up the suspension to my weight and style which included spring selection both front and rear. The outcome was exquisite and has served me exceptionally well to this day.

  34. That is a Wilbers rear shock and appears to have a spring fitted to suit the optional hydraulic per load adjuster. Thats why it looks short. Phil

  35. I have my audilogist custom mold these earplugs, but they are attenuaters only, no monitors. I tried in helmet communication, but found it distracting. I only use visual cues for navigation anyway, and won't even answer my phone when I am off the bike . . . edit: The only downsides I have found are once having to reshape the outer surfaces for clearance in a particularly tight fitting helmet, and discovering they filter out high pitch mechanical noises. Like when my other bike ate up its cam and rockers over time and I didn't hear it.

  36. I know someone has done it. @Moto maybe? I was thinking of doing the same because of all the bling and trickery on modern RBW machines the only one other than ABS that I would really like would be cruise. I simply haven't worked up the enthusiasm to do it yet though and since I've been riding Grisos since 2006 I tend to think the likelihood of me ever getting enthusiastic enough is probably pretty slight!

  37. I would love to see FQ at Aprilia. While Mav has great races occasionally, they need someone who can compete for a championship. That said, it was a great pair of races for Mav, a real shame the bike failed him in the second race. Seems the trans was having issues most of the race, and finally packed it in at the end. As to Marc and Pecco, to me the deciding question is what would Marc have done if Pecco slide it up the inside into that turn and then ran wide. I am pretty sure Marc would have re-passed him up the inside the moment Pecco slide wide. That is what Marc would have done, that is what any racer out there would have done. The same basic pass / re-pass happened between other racers in that very race. It was to be expected, unless you can close that door before the other guy can slide it through the door, you have to have expected that. For Marc to pull back down onto the racing line when someone else was already there and fully alongside him was what caused the accident. That said, I would call it a racing incident. But Ducati had to know that putting Marc on a Ducati was going to mean more Ducati's would fail to finish. It was to be expected. Marc has never shown respect for other racers. He isn't going to start now. I suspect that was part of what Ducati was worried about and why they did not seem keen on Marc joining the Ducati fold.

Yeah..195-200mph down the straights and then knee to knee into the corner....I agree..We can't imagine...thats 60 miles per hour faster than I have ever ridden a bike, and that was for 5 minutes here and there on the straights..not for an hour on..straights/corners and drop off hills with a bloke on my ass.

  39. I actually have no idea how well the riders get on with each other, but I can't agree with that opinion. Friendship definitely does not exclude intense rivalry. Just go for a ride with a couple of good mates on a good bit of road, and observe what happens. Rivalry without a friendly basis, or at least mutual respect, only leads to nasty incidents on the field of competition. EDIT: I just looked him up. The bloke is not even 20 years old, and Spanish. He's probably still half-drunk on his own testosterone. Anuvveredit: apart from that, those blokes are doing somethng that nobody else can even remotely fully understand, except for other people who are doing the same thing. Of course they buddy up to each other.

  40. I suspect, although I haven't checked, that rather than the brake light still not working it is actually permanently on. I broke a spade connector off the original and fitted the new one which had arrived the day after the issues started, initially after I broke the connector the brake light still worked off the foot brake, then nothing during the issue. Now I, thinking about it, I suspect I've managed to fit the microswitch with the plunged wedged in the light on position. I'll check it out later. All was good when I went for a 40 mile spin yesterday, briefly had no neutral light, other than that it was fine.

  42. One way to look at it; Jorge Martin is the second loser; said that he suffered a lot from chattering and vibrations, something he has been complaining a lot from the get-go... MM93 is fourth in the championship, minus 10. Looking at the Honda disaster, he can only be happy about his move.

  43. Do use an eraser to clean the contacts of the bulb/lamp and the holder . Put a contact grease in the socket to keep this from happening again . My bike did the same thing !

  46. I agree probably relays... Mine has had this before I checked /cleaned them esp #1 and # 5 and blew out any dust etc from the relay base which sorted it. By the way toggling the kill switch can help but really a stop gap measure. Cheers

  47. That could be classic relay issues. A lack of the fuel pump running when you turn it on can be a relay issue (assuming it is not a problem with the fuel pump). The fuel pump should always cycle when you turn it on. If it doesn't, something is probably wrong. The relay issue can be the relays themselves or the connections at the base of the relays. If the fuel pump runs but it doesn't start when you push the starter button a common set of issues there is either the side stand switch or the neutral switch that turns the neutral light on. There is an interlock between the side stand and the neutral switch. I would check your fuses, and your relays. Also, confirm the headlight is on and not just the running light in the headlight bucket. If the headlight isn't on the alternator probably isn't charging the battery. Others will add more no doubt.

  49. Inlet manifold rubbers leaking/cracked. Worse when at operating temp because the engine is off the cold enrichment trim and onto the normal fuel mapping and so the air leak makes it lean. The cold enrichment trim helps cover the leanness caused by the manifold leak. I was the first to fit cam gears and it didn't cure my 2800-3200 hick up. A Daytona engine cured that. Phil
