Sorry for late reply - I’ll ask if he’s riding or flying… he’s got a bike or two down south here, so he may just be flying down then riding.  I used to leave a bike up there for the same reason, that it takes so long to get back and forth that it makes it prohibitive to be able to enjoy the riding up there.

Last year I brought my bike down the AlCan, and in years past have done the Cassiar.  AlCan was a great run, and I’ll admit I had been blind to how nice it was, after assuming for years (decades) that it was another version of the Cassiar but more crowded.  Not so… the Cassiar is nice and has its own charms, but the AlCan has the Canadian Rockies that put it in a different category.  For what it’s worth, i can offer a few thoughts, perhaps mostly on a different thread or message.  In short, most of the important details are readily available, like: careful fuel planning and including carrying an extra reserve strapped onto bike just in case (there’s plenty of fuel, but sometimes further apart and sometimes not open when you need it).  Look at the “milepost” publication for guidance on fuel and sightseeing stop, an online guide (used to be published, and probably still available in hard copy). And the obvious great things to see are indeed great to see, like the Banf-Jasper area, and the northern Rockies lodge & environs (and nice place to stay).  Up toward Carcross there are some choices, like heading up toward Whitehorse (which is fun), and/or heading down the lovely one-way-in/out Atlin.  Then I usually have spent a night at Discovery Yukon Lodge on my way up toward “the big part of” alaska, after spending some time poking around Destruction Bay (south of there).  I’m already writing too much, but there’s more to say, so I’ll call it good for this string.  Oh, except to say that taking the ferry back down south at the end of such a trip, from Haines or skagway (to prince rupert, or Vancouver, etc), with the bike, is a hassle to set up, and takes a ton of time, is now foolishly expensive, but its quite enjoyable.

Enjoyed the "string" and memories brought back.

As luck would have it, I'm wearing a T-shirt from "Frank's Place Bar/The World's Farthest North Biker Bar" acquired in Fairbanks in 1992. Rode an '88 Softail (fuel capacity: 4 gal.) from Tucson via a HOG rally in Reno up the Alcan...which also happened to be its 50th construction anniversary. The HD dealer at the time was located in IIRC a log cabin looking building...and was even back then fighting HD's corporate push to standardize dealer's "look". (A battle I see they lost googling the current Fairbanks dealer.)

Anyway, the then owner had spent time in SE AZ...so we spent some time shooting the breeze...I recall sitting in a barber shop chair with some of the help wondering if we had seen the same whores given our animated conversation. He poo-pooed returning on the Alcan...and said a return via the Cassiar would be less...well...pedestrian. Challenge accepted.

Still have my copy of The Milepost from back then.

And still have the '88 HD. Oh...now with a 5 gal. tank.

  2. I have the previous iteration of the Speedhut speedometer. Lamp/needle lighting are on switched power, the GPS is hard wired to the battery. I measured a 100mA with the ignition switch off.

Luckily, I can easily disconnect the speedo from the battery..as long as I remember to do so!

  3. Was waxing the V11 the other day and discovered the guts of my RH front turn signal wanted to come out with the lens loose and not wanting to snap back in place. The signal's front had all my attention.

    Ordered a replacement.

Buffing it out today, I noticed a screw on the back side of the turn signal. Tightened it up....all is well.:homer::huh2:

Guess I need a time out before replacing the cam belts on the Ducati....

  4. I've got a surplus speedo cable off my 2004 V11 having gone the Speedhut route. Got it from MG Cycle a few thousand mile ago and bent it a bit more to clear my throttle linkage. Works fine...replaced the gauge due to issues with the trip odo. Preference given to the first one that calls dibs AND shows up at Cedar Vale, KS next month for a hand-off.

  5. Installation complete and road tested. All is well. Dial and needle lighting go thru switched power, the GPS runs direct to the battery. Was surprised that the GPS current draw (pre- and post signal acquisition) was just over 100mA, which explains why my battery was so low after sitting for two days. Fortunately, I can break the connection to the battery easily to avoid running it down.

Oh...Speedhut is discontinuing their current gauge models ("EL lighting") and replacing them with "LED lighting" 1 May 2023. They will look different at night, so if you're running a Speedhut/OEM combo and thinking of replacing the OEM in the future, you might want to get your order in. I was also told the face of the new gauge has a slightly different "texture" and will also not match.

On the plus side...no inverter required for lighting!

When I was working at my battle tank factory, all the components affixed to the chassis and exposed to the environment where treated against corrosion. I think Cadmium plated. Support wheels, road wheels, sprockets, tension pulleys...

Decades ago, working at the missile factory, hardware I was responsible for was Cd plated. But as this got additional visibility (OSHA website):

Cadmium and its compounds are highly toxic and exposure to this metal is known to cause cancer and targets the body's cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal, neurological, reproductive, and respiratory systems.

    changed out to CRES.:oldgit:

I go to Ace most of the time.  Seems to be better than Fastenall.  We have industrial fastener supply on the southside of the City in a little town with all the strip clubs.  Minimum purchase is like $20 there.

Anyway, I played all those hardness grades with a non load bearing bolt assembling my Duc's pannier bracket that sheared.  The new (stronger) one sheared just as the other one.  According to the forum, the better fix was to tap it out and go to a larger size.  Anyway, I'll see if the works.  I'm planning to ride the Duc to MotoGP Austin.  Full confession, I did have my bags overloaded according to Ducati.  It's actually a Givi designed system with a Ducati badge.

Is there a cover charge too?

The gauge backlighting and the needle illumination require separately powered LED drivers.

Understood. The dial lighting is powered off the supplied inverter while the needle lighting goes directly to 12V.

My electrical connections weren't robust during the systems test...and if I wind up without a lit needle once installed it'll be a small price to pay to avoid removing/reinstalling the OEM gauge cups.:luigi:

  9. The Speedhut speedo install is proceeding slowly. Leveraged Scud's lamp fixture idea, but I wanted to distribute the loading across a larger area of the speedo's case so Macgyvered this:

    20230304_114411.jpg

Gorilla glued the step-up washers and lamp nut together as an assy then JB welded it to the back of the case. Finally, loctited the center post in place. While the "center" post is off center, the assy (including the gauge) was installed in the OEM gauge cup for the JB weld and now slips easily slip in/out of said cup.

I have a direct line to the battery available to power the GPS, will use one of the now unused OEM speedo lights to power the speedo needle/dash lighting. System test went ok, with gps acquiring and dash lighting functional...though the jury is out about the needle lighting. I had to turn off the shop lights to see the subtle dash lighting...maybe the needle is subtler!
