There are at least 2 cases of flywheel failure documented on this forum. I don't have them archived or I'd link them. They can be found if you dig deep enough. Proof enough to make me swap my clutch and flywheel, as many others have done. If yours didn't fracture, you had good fortune. I hope it lasts. Mine didn't fail in 11,500 mi. from new, nor was it cracked when I removed it. Not everyone's shift selector spring broke either, but my personal preference was to swap it out and not be constantly wondering how much time is left before I'm stranded, or worse.

All (or most) 2002 engine cases had the paint problem. The factory offered a fix but I didn't bother. When I swapped the clutch, I stripped and painted the motor.

I do not have a 2002 bike with a single clutch assy anymore...of the 3 2002 I had, 2 Scuras and one Mandello..one had 25,000 mi on it  when i sold it 4 years ago and now has over 35,000 miles on it is still working fine for the current owner.., The other 2002  had 18,000 miles on it when I rebuilt the entire bike including complete tear down of the motor to powdercoat the cases, it did not have any cracks but I put a different clutch in it anyway since it was all apart, the third had less than 10,000 which I bought crashed and I still have the motor here with original flywheel..it is not cracked.

Approximately what year's was it when these 2 previous incidents were posted? I have looked extensively ..both here and in Italy over the past few years and did not run across these.

    Thanks

No, I have to admit I don't and haven't. I've only read about it.

The thing is, some very smart people invested considerable effort teaching me during my time at the university about how to evaluate sources. The things I have read on the topic have been, at least to a good part, from reliable sources, and plausible. I'm convinced it is not a "phantom of the internet", but rather something that really has a basis in fact.

Nevertheless, solid first-hand information would be very welcome. :)

I totally agree with the great value of "reliable sources with testimonials based on facts which they presented . I would love to know where you have read this? And/or who these sources are, or exactly what facts they presented which convinced you so strongly. I  then could do my own deductive reasoning and draw my on conclusion.   This type of thinking is of course based on my own time at an excellent University ...:)

Regarding the paint on the motor: mine has got that. The owner before me touched it up here and there with something. The touch-ups are visible if you look, but fairly good. I've decided that the best strategy for the meantime is just to not wash the engine.

I'd be more concerned about the single-plate clutch. Some of them were, apparently, grenades waiting to go off. Maybe someone here has solid information about whether that is really the case, and which ones were involved.

Do you know anyone yourself or have you seen one in personn? a single plate clutch "Blown up"? There was one photo of one several years ago that failed..although I have never read a personal account about it..The phot has been beaten to death over and over for 10 years or more on the internet but I have yet to see one that "blew up" or to meet anyone on any of the forums who had one "blow up" them selves..I've owned 3 2002 V-11's

2-Scura's and a  Rosso Mandello. with them..none blew up...So yes..I'd like to see some "Solid" information too.

  4. Unfortunately..As Scud eluded to...although they are beautiful...the 2002 will have bubbling engine and transmission  paint..if not now ( It looks like it does) ..eventually..( ask me how I know). 2002's  all get it..and like I once heard someone say. " It is like a beautiful woman with a big wart on her nose..you can't see beyond it.

  5. It's an awesome bike, The most rare and sought after of all the V-11's in my eyes..Even more difficult to find than the Rosso Corsa.

I love that Black..and with all the tasteful little touches you always do to your bike..ie; Gauges,Powder coating, etc, and that un-obtainable Exhaust system..along with your attention to detail..it is a prize find.

A number of years ago my first V-11..of the Seven I have owned , was your old Greenie which you went thru...An awesome bike that got me hooked on MG

    Someone will get a Winner!!!

I would love to see FQ at Aprilia. While Mav has great races occasionally, they need someone who can compete for a championship. That said, it was a great pair of races for Mav, a real shame the bike failed him in the second race. Seems the trans was having issues most of the race, and finally packed it in at the end.

As to Marc and Pecco, to me the deciding question is what would Marc have done if Pecco slide it up the inside into that turn and then ran wide. I am pretty sure Marc would have re-passed him up the inside the moment Pecco slide wide. That is what Marc would have done, that is what any racer out there would have done. The same basic pass / re-pass happened between other racers in that very race. It was to be expected, unless you can close that door before the other guy can slide it through the door, you have to have expected that. For Marc to pull back down onto the racing line when someone else was already there and fully alongside him was what caused the accident. That said, I would call it a racing incident. But Ducati had to know that putting Marc on a Ducati was going to mean more Ducati's would fail to finish. It was to be expected. Marc has never shown respect for other racers. He isn't going to start now. I suspect that was part of what Ducati was worried about and why they did not seem keen on Marc joining the Ducati fold.

FLASHBACK to Vale and MM...Wherever MM goes..trouble follows..its his style.

I could see this coming and it will happen again..unfortunately.

I actually have no idea how well the riders get on with each other, but I can't agree with that opinion. Friendship definitely does not exclude intense rivalry. Just go for a ride with a couple of good mates on a good bit of road, and observe what happens. ;)

Rivalry without a friendly basis, or at least mutual respect, only leads to nasty incidents on the field of competition. :huh2:

EDIT: I just looked him up. The bloke is not even 20 years old, and Spanish. He's probably still half-drunk on his own testosterone.

Anuvveredit: apart from that, those blokes are doing somethng that nobody else can even remotely fully understand, except for other people who are doing the same thing. Of course they buddy up to each other. :)

Yeah..195-200mph down the straights and then knee to knee into the corner....I agree..We can't imagine...thats 60 miles per hour faster than I have ever ridden a bike, and that was for 5 minutes here and there on the straights..not for an hour on..straights/corners and drop off hills with a bloke on my ass.

Truth be known, I am holding a room for our Chief Whip in the event he can be our honored guest at this SSR XX.

At some point in the SSR past, another member promised "a handful of Cubanos ."  I suppose they could stay in the room and when the innkeeper inquires about the potential improprieties, we can say,

"The Dutchman flew! and the Cubanos are nowhere to be found !"

       <_<

Okay, okay - the actual Cubanos:
