  1. G'day folks Thanks for that input Doc and Guzzimoto. I may just reset the compression damping by going to fully closed and then open by 13 clicks ... This should realistically put me where I'm at now with C3 but just guaranteeing that it is a genuine + 3 from full open and see how that goes? Maybe I'll also try Rebound fully closed then open by 6 clicks to give + 12 from full open..?This would theoretically be about 3/4 in... Well I never got to ride my fun way home tonight so couldn't fully test my changes a bit more....Bugger! Still where I'm at now is WAY better than it was before I had the work done. Looking forward to some free time to ride and decent weather to test these changes! Cheers Guzzler
  2. G'day mate I had some work done on my suspension late last year and have been fiddling / adjusting and basically learning this dark art ever since ha ha. I did post my findings at the time and have been meaning to add to the post for anyone else in the same boat as myself but since seeing your post I'll add my findings here. Firstly as per GuzziMoto if you have an early red frame you NEED to BLOCK those holes in the compression side so the oil doesn't blow through them! If you don't you'll have NO compression damping whatsoever until the last inch and then BANG almost hydraulic lock! This is fun cranked over in a bend.....NOT. Then get springs for your weight and install....I'm 90kg's and bike is 220kg's so all up about 700lb's in the old money which means I have .95kg linear springs. Once you've done this only then can you start adjusting / fiddling and testing to see what works for you. I also found some good info on settings.... Forks, if you have the correct springs for you and bike you should use as little compression damping as you need to avoid bottoming out and let the springs do the work! I also found a ratio of compression to Rebound of 1 to 3. So if Comp set to 3 Rebound should be 9. I work mine thus... wind all the way out ( loose ) then clicks back in.So my forks are set at Comp 3 clicks in from full loose ( out ) and Rebound at 9 x clicks in from full loose (out ).Incidentally I also found out that most forks are set up to work best with Rebound set up at about halfway. Given our forks have 18 Rebound settings 9 is halfway! As for shocks, I have a Hyperpro 460 Emulsion shock which has preload and Rebound adjustment only. However adjusting the Rebound also adjusts the compression in a set ratio. From what I gather the comp/reb ratio for shocks is 1 to 2. Anyways as per the notion of forks working best with Rebound in the middle of it's adjustment the shock came set up for me with + 25 of 50 possible settings ( half way again ). So where am I at the moment.... Forks up through the triples by 8mm ..Comp +3 Reb +9 Hyperpro steering damper at +4 Hyperpro 460 shock with Rebound at + 28 which is good. ( I did try + 30 but bit harsh on our goat tracks might try 29 though) I gotta say though even with the limited riding ( and in some pretty ordinary conditions too ie wind / rain ) I'm bloody happy with it like this and feel like I'm really really close. Ha ha I'm on the bike again tomorrow and will hammer her through the fun bit on way home again... hopefully less wind and no traffic so I can test her a bit more. Cheers Guzzler Ps do the mods and get correct springs before trying to adjust as only wasting your time otherwise mate. Pps as for sag I don't know much about that but am lucky that it was set up pretty well that way for me at least earlier on. Hope this helps but bear in mind I am NOT a suspension expert and this is only what I've been able to glean so far! These bikes do handle well once you get it right so do persist.
  3. Actually after reading this post it would appear that I'm definitely in the minority when it comes to ear plugs and not wearing them! Anyone else not using them...? Cheers Guzzler
  4. Ha ha...Maybe I could pull the wool over my ears....? I do realise that if you bought decent ones they'd fit better and perform better but just not my cup o Darjeeling I'm afraid. Ole mate Dave won't ride without them either and shakes his head at me too! Each to our own I guess eh. Cheers
  5. I can't stand wearing ear plugs.... They just aren't comfortable for me and bugger up my balance.Maybe I'd get used to it but not willing to persist with them. I too love the sounds of the bike and the road undiluted by either earplugs or music! Been riding since I was 17 and I've done some big rides in my time and thankfully I still have my hearing and no tinnitus touch wood. Don't know what's going with me but I'll carry on as I've been doing so far.... Cheers Ps It's 8 degrees here so I won't be going out in a tee shirt and shorts.. but maybe I'll wear my Bavarian wooly alpine hat backwards when we go shopping....? Ha ha bound to wind the wife up.
  6. Might be able to afford the spoked wheels for the greenie if able to wheel that outa the shed and flog it......
  7. My wife had one back in the day too... Holden Monaro. It was a 186 ( 6 cylinder ) as well. She loved it too and mentions the car every now and again! This was before we met but wouldn't mind pulling one outa the shed these days! Might be able to afford a few more bikes ha ha Cheers
  8. I've also seen a carbed 1100 sport with a chromed version which looks pretty good too! Being chrome it would probably be easier to keep clean and looking good longer? Cheers Ps Doc with 200k +.... she's allowed a wee bit of er patina.
  9. That looks good mate. The standard one looks manky pretty quickly.... But it's in the firing line so to speak. Cheers
  10. Pps Might have to poke about a bit more in Noojee and Nayook and points thereabouts and see what comes outa the woodwork!
  11. Actually I forgot about ole mate with the greenie from Wonthaggi....But that doesn't get ridden a lot from what I gather. Only other was a Tenni when I was able to get to a few club meetings but that's been sold and disappeared. Hens teeth and rocking horse droppings seem to be more prevalent... But I'll keep the V11 flag flyin....! Cheers Ps if there are more about they ain't out on the road and hate to think of them couped up in sheds not being ridden!
  12. Geez A spine raid here would be a party of one..... Bugger
  13. Yep I've often thought myself ( and mates ) very lucky indeed to have been able to indulge and enjoy ourselves back in the day without today's consequences! Cheers
  14. It's actually safer too! Crawling along at 100kph in a lot of scenarios means you're MORE LIKELY to lose concentration than if you're sitting on 160k.... At that speed you ARE concentrating on what you're doing! Ha ha 100kph on the Nullabor especially after a couple of days of travel IS dangerous but the rozzers will happily relieve you of your hard earned! Cheers Ps back in the day the cops weren't too bad either as many were bike nuts too and understood...unlike many of todays twats who've swallowed the govt BS hook line and sinker!
  15. You really need to pick the time and place for that sort of shenanigans over here.... Even then it's a nervous wait n watching of the lettebox for the next 2 to 3 weeks! The dictator and his minions have a 1 kph tolerance and 20 over means instant loss of licence. I think it's 40 + and they impound your bike which costs a couple grand to get back so I'm told. Anything silly (in big brothers eyes) and they crush it! Oh for the days when we could ENJOY ourselves in peace! If you got caught you paid your fine and lived to ENJOY yourself another day... None of this Safetycrat BS which is Goverment speak for revenue raising! Cheers Ps Ban low performance riders / drivers not High performance Bikes/cars by the way... ha ha says he who has mellowed somewhat over the years! (but not completely) Pps sorry for the rant!
  16. I've got the CSC version mate and no issues with fitment. This is the constant as opposed to progressive ( reactive ) tension one. Cheers Ps looks like the Germans love Bureaucratic BS as much as our Victorian State Govt.....
  17. Compliance in Germany... Geez sounds like a pain mate! But if it turns out it's ok to use on your bike and you go down that track, you won't be disappointed with the damper. Cheers
  18. I doubt you'd have any issues with compliance mate, they are a quality item! The Bitubo on mine was leaking when I got the bike at 20,000 kays! I fitted the Hyperpro damper when suspension upgraded at 40,000 kays and at 98,500 kays no leaks and it works perfectly still... Cheers
  19. Agree with you on the Hyperpro damper Doc... I have mine set on 4 clicks (of a possible 24, I think can't remember ). Anyways it's a quality item and works a treat. We have some good goat tracks round here that've given the bike ample opportunity to misbehave so I'm a fan! Cheers Guzzler Ps the standard Bitubo is CRAP
  20. Think I'll hydrate myself just thinking about it..... Then again it'll be wine o clock in t minus 4 hours! Cheers Ps be safe out there mate
  21. Ha ha I doubt Priscilla and co would've gotten the same reception in the wilds of Kazakhstan as they did in Broken Hill though...! But yeah, I reckon an overland trip including the Stans would be a great trip though. Alas I've missed the boat on such trips now but am grateful for the travel I've been able to do! Still having travelled it does give you a greater opportunity to see the whole world in a grain of sand as opposed to never having done so.. Cheers Guzzler
  22. Mate When you get away from the coast here in Oz the heat tends to be a drier heat and not as draining on you but still need to be wary of it as it does still knock you about. It sounds like the conditions you describe in Kazakhstan and other desert environments. I was a fair bit more resilient when younger ( ha ha weren't we all ) and coped but wasn't really keen on it. The weather is changing and as I mentioned we're getting some ( albeit lesser ) humidity coming down from the north here and I don't like it at all. Ha ha I grew up in CHCH ( Christchurch ) New Zealand and on the odd occasion ( very odd occasion I might add ) it hit 30 degrees and the nor wester came through it knocked the tripe out of us.... Nigh on 40 years here in Oz and I'm better with heat now ( blood thinned out a bit?) but still reckon I'm warm blooded and handle the cold better! Cheers Ps plus one on the layering of gear too!
  23. Absolutely it's the humidity that makes the difference.... I've ridden in 46 degrees and traffic a few times... yep in the gear ( leathers ) but as a younger bloke! The last time I tried that was in a crazy heat wave here about 10 years ago, I hydrated big time before the 25 kay commute home (back then) but it really knocked me about. It was rammed home to me in a big way that I'm not 30 years old and fit any more....! I think we (well me anyways ha ha ) seemed to be a bit slow to realise the fact that we're old farts now... but I do get it NOW. So for the last 10 or so years I don't ride under 5 and over 35, well not if I can help it. Must admit we're getting more of the humidity from the north coming down here at times the last few years and I hate it, no where near as bad as Houston though and makes working in the yard a pain! Or most anything really. Yep it took one more reminder to learn for good. 28 degs + the humidity and I did 5 big hours in the yard in the sun and it bloody knocked me out...Collapsed into the pool dragged myself inside and drank litres of water plus electrolyte drinks plus didn't move from the sofa rest of the day!Lesson well and truly learnt! You don't muck about with dehydration! Cheers Ps I'm a big fan of the old traditional leathers and have never tried a mesh jacket so can't comment on them.
  24. Ha ha Who knew it was such a party piece.....! Ps with a new Tungsten Carbide chain it does indeed rip through red gum like a knife through butter!
