Timing Marks

When checking my valves I was looking for TDC marks on the flywheel but couldn't find them. Not that it matters so much but I am still curious if any of you guys have seen them or not?

I am pretty sure they should be there. Look for a D for destra or right or drive side. Look for S for di sinistra or left or starter side. (forget about shaft side) Looking through the peep hole, use a flashlight, the letters will appear just slightly to the right side in the peep hole. Remember that the marks can indicate top dead center of compression or top dead center of exhaust stroke.

Dammed if I could find any marks on the flywheel on my scura, however a drinking straw down the spark plug hole will give you a good indication of TDC when both tappets are loose.

 

BTW I'm now getting 45 miles per gallon (4.546liters) on long runs.

Is it the drinking straw that lets you sip fuel rather than guzzle it

No, Its for the lube oil but I may go to syntetic. The question will it improve my digestion?

Anyone know how to check the ignition timing? My bike pings a little bit and thought it might be a good check.

Not sure, but I think you have to set up a degree wheel on the alternator.

Align the wheel using the D and S marks.

Does anyone with a workshop manual know the proper ignition advance? at idle and at full advance?

I think you may be on to something. I have my bike running pretty rich courtesy of a Power Commander and yet, it can still occasionally ping.

I believe the engine position sensor can be shimmed a little, to adjust the timing. But I am not sure if that is safe to do or even feasible.
