one cure for marzzochi fork harshness

While draining the fork oil I discovered maring of the hex fitting at the bottom of the left internal shock assembly indicating missalignment with the hex recess at the bottom of the fork tube. This caused that fitting to seat one quater inch higher into the lower assembly blocking the oil return holes, causing the fork to bottom out after only two inchs of travel.

No wonder the suspension seemed harsh. After carefully aligning the hex fitting with the hex recess and counting 8 to 9 turns of the retainer screw.I now have compliant suspension with twice the travel.

I wanted to share this information due to the many complaints i've read of harsh suspension.

Thanks to V11Brad for posting this. My 2000 Sport had this same issue.

When the caps are loose for an oil change, pull up and down on the internal assembly. There should be no play. If it clicks up and down, your internals are not seated in the recess.

Even with no play, you might need to remove the assembly for inspection to be certain it is fully seated.
