Clip-on choice and installation?

I acquired a lovely '03 V11 Lemans after a long layoff from riding. I had owned the same year and model Lemans in my 40s, sold it, and determined in my 60s it was the bike I most loved and wanted back. I'm older now and the reach to the bars is fine for one hour of riding and pure agony for three hours. I would like to raise the bars, and have looked at many options (below).

1) Please tell me if I missed any good choices (I realize much has been written on the topic, and I have read the past posts). I am open to any option including replacing with standard handlebars; 

2) I would like as much increase in rise and setback as possible without replacing hoses, as my mechanical skills and ambitions are limited. I would also like to use the stock bars;

3) My current preference is Tarozzi clip-ons (http://www.fastfromthepast.com/56-0021). Would this setup work with the stock bars? Any idea whether the maximum rise (70mm) would require replacing hoses? 

4) Is there a difference mechanically or in handling in placing the clip-ons above or below the triple clamp? Is there a good step-by-step guide for installation?

I don't see MPH risers with your options. I don't really know if they are still made. I had a set and did not install them as I found I like the stock config. The rise and pullback are modestly controlled by rotation. I know they can work inside the LeMans fairing without fouling. Many on the forum have used them.

The best reason to use a riser of this type is retaining the lovely vibe reducing stock clip-ons. Pull one apart and look inside. The second best reason is you get to retain the unique and comfortable, classic Guzzi bar angle at the head. A lovely reach over the long V11 tank and a sight to behold... on or off the bike. Perfect wrist position for me.

They came with longer hoses but I have read net info stating re-routing stock lines can get you there. I'd plan on new lines.

There are other similar styles available .. anything with a 2" or so rise would likely work the same way.

Thank you, footgoose. Very helpful. I sent a note to MPH to see if their risers are still available. Could you tell me why the stock bars wouldn't fit other risers? When you mention similar styles, could you give me some examples?

Those "similar" risers footgoose pictured are from ROXspeedFX. Not sure about later V11, but my early Sport was going to need extended hoses and cables to fit 2" risers . . .

yes, by 'similar styles' I should have said 'same style' similar construction. As in - a riser that uses the existing bar and fork clamp and just acts as a spacer. I don't see why any of the 22mm ones wouldn't work with the stock bars. Other examples are out there to see and I can't really recommend any. Consider it experimental :huh2:

I would check with these guys to see if the "bars 40mm" means the fork diameter. The V11 is 54mm. The 70mm rise is 2.75in and I would guess it would require new lines. While you're asking them, see if their bars are 22mm like the V11

Woodcraft also makes clipons of varying heights. They go by fork stanchion diameter and have many sizes available. A low-rise set could be used it you raise the forks a bit in the triples. However, this will make the steering slightly quicker and the early V11s did not need that, so they say. 

I am pondering the opposite on my Ballabio. I have the tapered 28/22mm bars on factory risers. They're OK for town or distance, but I would still like slightly lower bars. Vortex made the OEM Buell 54mm clipons and that is one option I am considering. They need 28mm of exposed fork to grab and mine came with 18mm showing, so only a 10mm difference.

I don't care for them and they will not work for what i am planning. If you'd like them then let me know.

 

I don't think Moto Guzzi ever made any bar risers, and other than the logo those look exactly like MPH risers. 

Perhaps MPH changed their logo over the years, or someone copied their design?

Hi Bridge,

I used those tarozzis for a while (Got them from Disco Volante in the correct size).  Be aware that whilst they will fit, they don’t fit very well- for one thing the master cylinders prevent them from being orientated ‘square side forward’ properly.  I had to use shims to space everything out, which wasn’t ideal at all, and also meant I ended up taking off the choke lever too.  

Having said that, I did use them for must’ve been a couple years once i got them where i wanted them.  Oh and as they’re multi-adjustable, having to drop the sliders every time you change your mind is a  ballache.

I’ve currently got the Woodcraft high clips fitted and they’re ace. can’t fault them at all.  Everything fits (inc the idle lever) and I have them clipped on at the very end of the flare between the yolks, with a few inches of slider free above to raise them if ever i feel the need.  Can remove and refit in seconds too 🙂

MPH if someone is selling,I've used Conveter-Bars on other bikes and liked them,just don't look as nice as MPH's....
