Anyone successfully use one of those quick-release tank bag adapter rings?

I live in hope that someone one day will work out a way to replace the chin pad . Something that's lower but still fills up the space in the tank. Maybe in carbon fibre

pursue it with an ad in 'classifieds wanted.' You never know what may turn up. I have had success there. My '02 LM came with a solid (not padded, not carbon) chin pad that can be pulled off like the black padded ones, so they are out there. If you can get a padded one cheap enough you might convert it to what you want. With the right bits I don't think it would be that hard to fabricate something.

patience + example.. too much $$ imo but ... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Moto-Guzzi-V11-Sport-Tank-Chin-Pad/164192102045?hash=item263a9ca69d:g:Xw0AAOSw3axepyNW

now that I think about it with all the mount points at the top of the early tanks a handy person could fab a piece of flat stock and space it up to desired height fairly easily, replacing the chin pad altogether. From there, add attach points for whatever.

Is the hole pattern for the tank ring the same between later, non-chin pad tanks and earlier chin pad versions ?   There's 2 different part numbers for the caps, both US versions.

Earlier - GU 0110 3920   Chin Pad

Later -   GU 0110 3990   No Chin Pad

Also, @KINDOY2, does the gas cap open all of the way or does it interfere with the inside of the ring?  Will a %$#% California emissions gas hose fit in the gas cap opening with the ring on?

It opens all the way on my bike , but you may have to pull the rubber boot part of the nozzle back to fill..I always do it that way  anyway because I like to see the fuel height while filling it..so that aspect doesn't bother me

cheers

Here's the same tank ring set KINDAOY2 recommends with the kit diagram/parts list/pics attached.  This is installed on my '03 LM with a bigger, farther setback tank bag (15-21 Liter).  If you can purchase the kit, then purchase multiple mounting rings (Pc. 2) you can stack 2 or 3 and just adapt longer bolts for it to work out and still clear the chin pad.  See pics.

I ordered the #"175" tank ring.  Still not sure if chinpad and no chinpad caps have the same bolt pattern.  I'll report findings when my part gets here.

Note sure what you are speaking of as to chin pad bolt pattern.  The chin pad sits forward of the tank ring.  The 175 should work no problem.  The challenge will be getting the bag to lock in to the ring as the chin pad "padding" will interfere on the 2002.  As I noted above, probably the cleanest way to mount the tank ring/tank bag without having to take the chin pad off of a 2002 tank is purchase multiple mounting rings (Pc. 2, Part #TRT.00.640.014).  If you can obtain the individual mounting rings (which really just a spacer ring) from SWMotech you can stack 2 or 3 mounting rings underneath the top latching ring."  Or if you are so inclined you could fabricate a couple of rings out of hard plastic or aluminum using the Pc. 2 of the kit.  Someone with a 3D printer or a CNC machine could undertake this no problem.  You would need to adapt longer bolts than those supplied with the kit but it would then allow you to clear the chin pad thickness.  With the 03 LeMans (w/ no chin pad) my large 15-21 Liter SWMotech bag has to be pushed down very slightly to lock in.  Not the case when installed on the Norge as the tank ring sits very slightly higher.

Someone else recently asked if the bolt pattern of the fuel filler caps is the same between the early (chin-pad) tanks and the later, longer tanks with the internal pump/filter . . .

By quick comparison between a '02 and '03 tank ring, measurements appear to be the same.  However, I only measured with carpenters rule, did not micrometer.  Note that the 2 most forward screws are inverted flat head machine screws installed from the bottom of the lower adapter ring and do not match the tank ring cap screw locations below them.  This is how SWMotech adapts the upper lock ring on multiple different tank ring/bike  configurations.  So to answer the question, it appears the tank ring bolt config is the same between early and later models (at least between an '02 w/chin pad and '03 w/o chin pad).0820200955b.jpg

I did it on a 2001 RM with (soft) chinpad. I'll upload my pics and learnings tomorrow, now time for a beer first:bier:

Edit: So yeah, I bought a SW Motech daypack and Aprilia tankring (don't know which one, but it originally fits a 2001 ETV 1000 Caponord).
When installed directly, the chinpad prevents the bag from locking into place (as expected). So I made spacers (9mm) to raise the tank ring straight up. The bag fit perfectly! However the fuel filler cap would not open anymore, it hit the tank ring as it was now raised.:homer:

I removed the rear spacers and cut down the front ones (made from 8x1mm alu tube) to about 5-6mm of raise, essentially putting the ring on a slight angle. I then ground down the plastic on the inside a few mm in order to let the filler cap pass, as well as some of the metal ring underneath.
Keep in mind the bolt holes in the filler cap are recessed 6mm, so the actual length of my 8mm OD spacer tubes is 11-12mm on the front.

I finally got around to trying to mount the SW-motech ring on my Sport. I went into it knowing that the tank's chin pad was going to cause some resistance, but I simply couldn't get it to work at all. Even with a quick bodge job of shimming up the front of the ring a bit, the bag-side mechanism simply refuses to gain purchase on the tank ring. Even with me trying to coerce it with nearly all my body weight. I guess if I want to use it, I'm going to have to invest the time into a more substantial shim job. Why does it seem that nothin's ever easy, when all you want to be is lazy! 😡
