Le Mans handlebar end weight: powder coated or standard paint spray?

Recommended Posts

I lost my right hand side bar end weight, and the replacement I found (one month wild goose hunting) came rough lathed.

I would like to get it painted, but the brake levers and left hand side look powder coated to me. Can anyone confirm?

I'd (no I wouldn't myself, actually) chuck it up into my cordless drill and spend a little time smoothing it out, then zinc primer it and final coat with black gloss Rustoleum. Let it dry well in the sun, or oven if you have no sun. It'll be so hard you'll think it's powder coated.

Thanks!

I don't have a buff, but I know where to find one not far away. I will try your suggestion. And if it looks too different, I can always do the powder later.

The originals look to be "blued" to me, same as the finish on a gun but polished first. You can buy bluing kits and do it at home as I did with the frame side plate bolts and a marking out tool I restored in a thread here somewhere.

Or simply paint them both the same?

Thought about that too, but the clutch and front brake levers both seem power coated exactly like the end bar weights were.

I know, it is really minimal and I should let it go. Nobody is going to see it apart from me.

I found two bar end weights for my Guzzi from Boonstra in the Netherlands. Used, but for 40 Euros + 20 for express delivery.

The powder coating quote I got was not specified exactly but above the 100 USD mark.

for less than 100 USD, you could be set up to powder coat your own. :huh2:

I am not a specialist of powder coating, but I know more or less what it is. Most of the powder coating kits, I mean the cheap ones, are around $100, with some at $90. Then you need to purchase the paint, another $20. Just for the one time.... Not sure it is worth the while.

I forget how much the Harbor Freight electrostatic spray gun is, but definitely sub $50... And their nylon powder is similarly cheap. The boys using it to coat their bullets don't even bother w/ the spray gun, they just throw it all in a plastic tub & agitate a bit; the powder adheres just fine.

Ultimately, the OP gave us a trick question anyway, since the *correct* answer is secret hidden option #3, Manic Salamander brushed stainless replacements since the original equipment are lacking sufficient mass anyway...

100 bucks?? holy moly…. there’s a guy here in sheffield will powdercoat them bar ends for a tenner.  He did the brake hanger on my old v11 for that much anyway.  Did my monza wheels for 100…

Reality check, there're bar ends for gods sake. Hit them with a quality rattle can paint. Might need to do them every year but so what. If you're really keen you could use $20 2 pack rattle can paint.

Do you remember this quote?

I am a man of simple tastes; I am easily satisfied with the best.

Often attributed to Oscar Wilde, but the author was Edgar Saltus a friend of Oscar Wilde. A similar statement was falsely attributed to Winston Churchill.

Back to the subject at hand, I am a perfectionist and meticulous ( some would say anal). I would describe it as passionate.

The end bar was perfect before i stupidly dropped the bike. I will do my best to be able to look at it as it had never happened.
