Odd site behavior on iPad

Recommended Posts

First thing I noticed when accessing the forum this morning on my iPad was I could no longer choose a reaction to a post, it's "like" or nothing, and when I click on the "heart" it refreshes the page before registering the "like".

_ When choosing an option in the menu bar, the sub-menu comes up all scrambled and it's impossible to select anything.

_ Clicking on a link within a post doesn't open a new tab as it use to but opens the link on the same tab.

_ On the home page, in the "recent" column, the badges with the reply count are on top of the topics titles and I can no longer switch from "Replies" to "Topics".

I experience the same behavior with 2 different browsers, ie. Safari and Chrome.

** Now, I should mention that my iPad is ancient and its iOS(12.5.7) is no longer supported.

Anybody else ran into this??

Edit: One more symptom — I can no longer reply to a post, the reply box has been replaced by a single line...

@docc  @Admin Jaap Any insight on the matter?

Thanks!

I was watching for others with a similar device to reply, but not so far, evidently.

Your OS will not update to anything more current? You have, I would suppose "shut it off and turned it back on again?" (rebooted?)

Yes docc, I have tried re-booting to no avail.

There must have been a software update by the site host!?

I noticed on the computer the name badges background color has changed to deep blue...

When an Apple device gets too old, it can no longer run the newest OS iterations as their architecture evolve and they require more computing power.

As much as I like their products and being a longtime user, Apple has always been highly criticized for not supporting their legacy hardware longer than they could have.

I find that to be a deeply inconceivable concept, when old school fix-it folks like us are trying their best to keep their 20+ years old machines on the road...

So as much as I like to squeeze every possible ounce out of anything I spent my hard earned money on, I'm afraid that in the case of my 10 years old iPad, which btw is otherwise in perfect shape and still fully functioning,  the writing is on the wall...

Fingers crossed that it can be fixed by the host techs though!

I see that my iPhone 7 (also quite cyber-old) is running iOS 15.7.3, so yes, that is apparently a huge leap from iOS 12.

Perhaps just "compatibility issues?"

None of this is in my paygrade, really. It's a wonder any of it works at all.

Now, spark plug gap? I got yer analog troubles covered! :luigi:

Try Mozilla Firefox.

In a similar fashion, I have an external SSD where I store my photo library. I purchased an M2 Mac Mini to supplement my rickety Mac Book Pro from 2011. I thought I could take my SSD drive with me and the Mac Book Pro which can no longer be updated. Believe or not, the Photo library was silently updated by Ventura, and can no longer be accessed by Catalina.

Usually Apple keeps applications backward compatible. Not in this case. So I can no longer access my photos with my old computer. Swell!

Firefox for Apple mobile devices requires iOS13.0 or later... no luck there.

I don't know if there was an earlier version that would have been compatible with my legacy iPad, but regardless, I don't have it installed.

I tried Puffin and it's worse!

RE your photo library problems, I think a lot of these incompatibilities have to do with graphics processors evolution. I run Catalina with a patch on 2008 iMac, which is not natively compatible with that OS,  and the Apple Photos app is behaving badly and isn't fully functional...

Despite Apple Inc. trying to wrangle them out of my hands,  I'm hanging on to my old machines... :oldgit:

Apple is certainly no saint there. With the M2 mini, I was offered a free training session.

My only query was how to merge my two photo libraries into one. Ventura had that option finally. Or so it seemed...

Get that. One library was on a Mac OS Extended journaled external disk, the other on an APFS formated one. On first attempt to merge, Photo came up with strange error messages. The Apple specialist was unable to understand. He kept putting me on hold while seeking help with the "real" specialists...

So, eventually the answer came: I was unable to merge my libraries because the destination of the merge was on an external disk that had been used by the time machine for backups. While I could not get a rational explanation for the why, I was told that to make that merge, I needed to use any disk not previously formatted for Time Machine backups.

I left it at that. Apple software is free, but it comes with strings attached.

I could purchase one of the third party software to merge my photo libraries, however I found odd that Apple never took seriously that over the years, people have multiple libraries.

I have two, combined, they would exceed 1 Terabyte. Note that I only use the photo library because it is the way Apple wants it. I just export them raw for those I want to keep, and post process them. I don't use Photo other than a storage application.

In any case, Apple is not stranger at using tricks to make you need to upgrade your equipment. Such as selling you computers with minimal RAM and absurd storage such as 256 Gbytes in 2023, no SD card reader, two USB-C ports....

Anyway, I use a Fire tablet because I did not want to pay top dollars for an iPad. The Fire tablet is really not anything I would recommend. It is only something made for consuming Amazon stuff. It is dirt cheap but still too expensive for what it is. You can only use Amazon's own browser "silk", you cannot install any other browser. Meaning Amazon completely spies on everything you do.

I don't use my tablet to communicate, because flat display typing is really not ideal. Plus, you cannot really do much in terms of posting pictures.

I have performed a maintenance updated of the forum software last week. No problems on my ipad or iphone. I use Google Chrome as standard browser and have the latest version of both OS as well as browser. That said, I see that you have tried a different browser. I'm afraid that you will have to update your hardware, or maybe use Tapatalk as a workaround?

Maybe I don’t get what you’re saying about merging libraries. Cant you just export all the photos raw to an external drive and then import to the new library? So then you’d have the old library / old iPad and a new one to add the old and new photos to.

I have exported all photos out of apple photos and stored as raw or jpeg so I’m not dependent on apple photos app. I think that works for me tho I just keep it as a file and don’t work from the export drive.

also, I never delete photos from the SD card, I just buy new ones when they fill up, might take a long time to find something specific but I know it’s there somewhere. These are pics from my canon. Pics from my iPhone are a different story but mostly not as important.
