Flooky Posted June 29 Posted June 29 Hi folks I check the 30a fuse every so often because of the melting issue, yesterday it had melted a bit again so i replaced it and went for my ride. While i was out the red charging light came on, bike was running fine so i got home ok. checked with a meter, sure enough , not charging. i checked the reg rec earth and cleaned it up, i checked the alternator yellow wires, still attached ok, not sure what to do next, while i was out i checked the fuse again (just showing a mate) and the fuse box was hot, not sure if this is a tell tale. i have read all the info on this amazing forum, but just need reassuring i am doing the right thing. thanks in advance. i am thinking new reg rec ? hope its not alternator cos they seem rare.
Flooky Posted June 29 Author Posted June 29 just read Mollys post seems similar to my issue, but my bike didnt stop. so much info on here , thanks
docc Posted June 29 Posted June 29 First, always go through and clean/ DeOxit/ tighten all connections including the stack of terminals on the battery. Is there any charging voltage at all? Check the battery voltage, key on/not running, then at idle, and at some rpm. What is the battery make/ age? If it is low, see if it will take a charge from an external charger. If it is an Odyssey, see the "answer" post in this thread for correct charging (if it is "dead" /below 12.0 volts. there is a special procedure to bring it up with a good battery before conditioning):
Flooky Posted June 30 Author Posted June 30 cheers Docc no charging at all, yes i have an odyssey battery, reads 12.5v ignition off. Its quite a new battery ( 1 year). All connections are clean, the reg rec earth was grubby but not now, i think i should order a new reg rec ? on the existing one it says ducati 343637
docc Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Worth also checking the AC output of the two yellow stator wires to be certain the alternator is functioning before getting the regulator. Your Odyssey is about 50% at 12.5 volts. Follow the procedure in the "answer" post of the conditioning thread to bring it up with a proper external charger with over 6 amps (not a "trickle" charger). 1
gstallons Posted June 30 Posted June 30 If you have an AGM battery , you need to find out what a fully charged AGM battery voltage is.
docc Posted June 30 Posted June 30 1 hour ago, gstallons said: If you have an AGM battery , you need to find out what a fully charged AGM battery voltage is. 12.84 volts The charging threshold for the Odyssey is 12.65v (85%). This is the point at which the AGM should be properly "conditioned." Asking our V11's flinky charging system to perform the heavy lifting of bringing back an Odyssey more deeply discharged is likely to lead to disappointments. 2
gstallons Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Purchas a GOOD AGM battery charger. I think Odyssey sells one? Check n see. 2

audiomick Posted July 1 Posted July 1 (edited) 2 hours ago, docc said: Odyssey's current list a approved chargers: That provided some satisfying information. The CTEK MXS 5.0 is on there, which co-incidentally is one of the two CTEK chargers I have (the other being a 3.8, I think). Obviously, I have to get a Hawker Odyssey to go with it, eh. And here's me thinking I might try a LiFePo when the current battery dies. Edited July 1 by audiomick
gstallons Posted July 1 Posted July 1 FWIW , if you have two AGM batteries , run jumper wires from the discharged to the charged battery and then charge both batteries . Trust me , I have revived some VERY dead batteries doing this. 2
