2. BTW

Box score vote tally so far:

    Ballabio = 1

    Cafe Sport = 2

New bike, Ohlins and tit exhaust (I'm going with the cafe sport just so I can say that all the time - funneee) have an advantage over hard stock seat. Split decision on stock vs. motobits pegs. I have to say that test riding a Ballabio a few months ago really pushed me towards finding something lower and farther down - especially with the higher bars.

Make that 3 CS. I love mine. Lots of little extras but my favorite is M4s and power commander. Ohlins are it!

  3. Last year, I did a web search on U.S. dealers.

I came up with names like:

    Larry's Lawn & Garden Center

    Joe's Tires & Brakes

    Eugene's Small Engine Repair

    <_>

That said, Cycle World had the MZ1000 in a multi-bike comparison test and the MZ beat the Yamaha FZ1 thru the slalom test :)

There were also a few excellent dealers.

MPH Houston and Union Cycle in Indian Trail NC, both of whom I have dealt with and enjoyed the experience.

  4. I agree with the dealer. I've heard more horror stories about these P.O.S. than good stories.

    Ciao, Steve

Hm mine works fine to bring the power and smoothness up to par with a couple of M4 exhausts installed. Almost gets rid of the slight flat spot at 4000 rpm. They are dead easy to install and if the map is right you will like you Guzzi V11 even more!!

I set up Mrs. Guzziownr's computer in the driveway with an extension cord from the garage. I was happily loading maps when she came home and gave me THE LOOK and went inside without saying anything.

Oh my, Lucy Liu. She is an all around wonderful woman! She can ride my Guzzi any time.

  5. I have a little Breva and a V11 CS. They are both magnificent machines.

I rode the Breva 1100. It handles well, has a super tranny and hauls the mail. I would recommend this bike to all who are interested. The new MG bikes are splendid and the Norjay will be an ST of record in the years to come.

However MG had a hell of a sale on the V11s.

Could not resist, i just love the bike.

The V11 CS performs well as far as I am concerned. The gear box is OK, the suspension is ace number one shit hot plu plus perfect being Olins. It has plenty of Carbonne, more would be better. The motor is pretty torquey and makes the bike feel like a real motorcycle thumping away as it does.

My other bikes are mundane. A Yamaha FJR1300 AE leads the group. However the longest ride I did in one day was on my CS. East of Monroe NC to Rockwall TX 6.30am to 10.30pm. i just love that bike.

The little Breva is more of a scooter or starter bike for most people especially the Ladies for whom the bike is absolutley perfect. It is a great bike for those of short stature wanting to learn the art of motorcycling.. Good for local stuff as well as trekking into the hinterland. I rode the little guy on the same route as the CS from NC to TX and sat at 80 to 90 when not being observed. It is a fine easy to handle all round bike.

Took a couple of days on that trip though!

The new Guzzis are absolutely wonderful bikes. However I just love bikes with a little history. V11s are part of it.

  6. Sorry, but this isn't accurate. The oil performs two functions in a plain bearing. Firstly there has to be a through-flow of oil to remove heat, a layer only a few molecules thick can't do this. Secondly what keeps the bearing and journal separate is not  the film of oil per-se. The forces acting on the oil film are much greater than the 50 or so PSI that the pumped oil protect against. Just do a simple set of sums on the pressure exerted on top of the piston and the surface area of the bearing and you'll see this is so. What actually protects the bearing and enables it to work is a rolling wave-form within the oil film itself which forms, very conveniently, at the point of greatest pressure on the film. This is what is known as the 'Hydro-dynamic Wedge' and is what allows a plain bearing to function. as the point of the wedge the oil pressure is in fact multiplied by some very large amount, (a factor of ten always springs to mind but I'm not absolutely sure?) and it is for this reason that bearing clearances are critical. Too large and the wedge can't form. Too small and the  through-flow of oil is too small and the bearing will cook.

While it is true that at any given instant, as long as there is a layer a few mollecules thick separating the bearing and it's journal then all will be OK, the whole process is dynamic and on-going in service and therefore it can't be looked at in such conveniently simple terms.

Good answer Pete. Sure the oil operates in the engine in many different ways. I was referring to metal to metal protection.

To me thick oil that is relativerly difficult to pump is a big problem as suggested in your response. Gotta flow otherwise it will not work correctly in the myriad of functions it performs.

5w or 50w when at operating temp both seem as thin as water! But 50w maybe too dam thick at thirty and 5w may be on the edge at 100 degrees.

Answer is simple don't cheapskate on quality of oil and change according to the work load you put on the engine.

6000 miles to me on the slab may be fine but in day to day cycles I would change at half the distance.

In the GUzzi at least there is no clutch or gearbox crap screwing up the mix.

  7. Anybody actully tried the Pirelli Diablo Strada or Metzeler Z6's on a V11?

Both are presented as extended mileage sport touring tires.

They got pretty good reviews on Bikeland.org site.

    77641

I have put them on one of my other bikes an FJR1300 and they are preferred ove the BT 020s and the Avon ST45 and 46. They have not been on long enough to check wear but feel very good indeed.

  8. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

My wife bought me tickets for x-mas. What a doll!!

I have never been to Califonia so we are going for the week. I hope they have corrcted all the traffic problems sound like a mess last year.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to sit. When my wife bought the tickets all they had left was general admission for the grass.

    91412

Don't waste your money on a grand stand seat. You can see great racing from just about anywhere on the grass which is why this is such a great track. Take a couple of folding chair or a blanket to sit on and you will be fine.

  9. Do you mean F or C?

IMHO the 6000 mile service interval for oil is a bit long.

I suspect the last couple thousand miles of that interval, the oil is likely to run very thin at high temperatures, and I am surprised some people use 5,10,or15W40, although in cool climates it probably is fine.

The people getting milk shake on the inside of the valve covers may actually want to put a cover over their oil cooler in cooler months....and as Dan and Spectro suggest, getting the temperature over the water boiling point is a good idea....still it scares me how thin the oil is at that temperature.

But it is a Guzzi and it will be fine  :mg:

    90358

I think that thin oil is fine. It only requires a few molecules of thickness to protect from friction. Thin oil circulates freely, which is good. If you are concerned about heat breakdown then a good synthetic is better than regular oil in that regard or so they say!

  10. I was there last year. Rode in on Friday not too much of a problem. Sat and Sun took the bus in as my son drove us there.

You are right about the traffic which was alleviated somewhat by going to one of the bus stops and parking there.

The racing was really worth watching.

I recommend the whole weekend from that point of view.

They have completely redone traffic flow for this year with a specific bike entrance. Things should be better.

I have booked a campground and am taking an RV there this year to try to beat the system allbeit at a high cost for the RV!

  11. This afternoon I got an unwanted birthday present; the forum was hacked and a piece of source code was planted. It opened a page on a server somewhere in Russia which contained a Trojan virus.

Thanks to Paul who noticed it and called me.

If you have received an email with a link or a file from the forum, don't open or click it!

As always, it was only meant for Internet Explorer users. Another reason to switch to FireFox!

    89405

This is it! Luckily it did not affect my mac, not that i downloaded it anyway.

    tripletango,

We have made a small tool for our site, I think you will guess what to do with it...

  12. I just put them on my FJR1300 and have done about 100 miles breaking them in. Seem to be a neutral handling tire. Had Avon ST on before and they too are good tires. No cupping on front and average wear for me on the rear (5000 miles). BT020s front cupped on FJR so not sure what it would do on the V11.

Still have the Z1s on the V11 and looks like the rear will give up around 3500 - 4000 miles. Would like a little more life than that on the next set of tires.

  13. I'm getting a tailpeice. but next year now, I got a Guzzi helmet a new battery, the baby dyno tuned and all the oils changed. That racked up the budget way too fast.

They make a Buell Carbon fly screen I think looks a little better than the guzzi one.

Well I have a picture of it but I am on the wrong computer. I'll post a new pic or two of what I have done. but its getting to be a lot.  :luigi:

CRG levers, Gold resivor caps, Rich maund seat (might get it recovered the colors don't fit) Buell flyscreen, Buell blinkers, Buell pirelli scorpion tires, FBF cans, FBF X-over, PCIII, Hawker battery, K&N pod filters, Edge mud guard, Manic salamander bar end weights, Fancy tank guard, Carbon fiber chin guard(the former rubber peice on top of the tank), fancy softer grips, who knows probably forgetting something

Would like a CF seat cowl, Pauls tail and the seat recovered, also getting the tank painted like the rosso mandello sometime.

tank bag would be nice too. just missed out on one in the classifieds.

Sounds great where did you get the items that are not Buell bits?

  14. My beautiful V11 Cafe Sport is being checked out by Mike at MPH just to make sure all is well after being crashed by my bro. and being put back together by me. I did not have enough confidence to mount the new clutch master cylinder so he is doing that. (never worked on hydraulics) He is checking bike for alignment and tune etc. after my install of M4s and Power Commander.

First time I ever did anything to any of my bikes! Actually enjoyed fiddling around.

Anyway questions for the enlightened. Is there a carbon flyscreen that fits the CS anywhere in the aftermarket. There is a carbon seat cover advertised on ebay - anyone tried it?

In addition has anyone yet received the carbon tail section, i think benguzzi was getting one.

Love my V11, so much so I am selling my 05 Triumph Speed Triple! That hurts but would like a KTM supermoto or Ducatti Supermotard one of these days!

  15. Hey Triple.....this weekend(May 5 & 6th) in Smithville at the River Park is the Antique Motorcycle Club rally, show and ride.  Next weekend on the 13th and 14th in New Ulm is the Houston British Motorcycle Owners rally which is BIG fun and large turnout.  All this here in Texas!  Go to either, I'll be there on the Supertwin.

Thanks I'll see if I can get down to Houston.

  16. It did happen after some hard acceleration.  I'll top it off a little.

    Thanks.

    86104

Yes mine did the same. New bike. Dealer changed oil at 1000 miles. 500 mile trip, accelerated hard and on came the light, backed off and it went out immediately. I stopped at the next garage and poured in a quart. Next day I overfilled the CS by a bit to make sure I did the next 500 miles no problem.

No problem for the engine if you top up the oil asap this according to dealer who checked out the bike later.

Consumption seems to have tapered off now the bike has some miles on it.

  17. Thanks to all.  I am going to Houston today so I will call in on MPH.

    86463

I ended up with bits off Wicks bike along with other bits and pieces from MPH.

Added the M4 carbon cans. Still need more parts. Getting quote from MPH and will query the forum.

Would love a carbon rear and screen but have not found a direct replacement for the front. There are rumours that there is German co with a seat surround and tail light. The front carbon piece is for a different V11 and requires fork mounts and a different head light.

I saw Wick's CS at MPH and it looks great. Has the fork mounted fairing M4s and a heck of a lot more.

  18. Sorry about the crash. I have a stock muffler you can have, if you want to stick with those.

Consider upping the coolness factor of the bike by getting the Guzzi carbon fairing and mounting it and the headlight and gauge to swing with the bars, a la the Rosso Mandello and Scura. This is what I did to my crashed Billy Bob.

I can guide you on what parts you need to buy, and even order them for you, as can Todd of MPH, a dealer that is far closer to you than I am. Last I looked, though, the carbon fairing was on backorder in the US. We may be able to get one from an alternative source, however.

Thanks to all. I am going to Houston today so I will call in on MPH.
