  1. Thanks Bruce,...tank off this weekend again and I will check it.

     

    Marty & Vuzzi - I did an Ohm test on both the plug caps. RHS 4.98, LHS 4.88 so they're not too bad.

    Both plugs are sooty so def rich !! Going to replace them.

     

    My V11 doesn't have a crossover (I assume you're referring to the front header one).

     

    So,..next will be Docc's tune up procedure followed by injector cleaner.

    This was held in 22nd-24th October , what we call here in New Zealand ..Labour Weekend

     

    Great turn out, with 6 V11s present.

    Approx 40 Moto Guzzis there with the older ones outnumbering the post 1999 ones

     

    Was a great weekend !!!

  3. Got an issue with my 2002 V11 Sport. It's running quite rich to the point of black smoke when revving it up and also under load.

    I have cans on it but standard collector. Have the snorkels removed but standard airbox.

     

    I checked the air filter, all good as was replaced not that long ago.

    Cleaned the air temp sensor.

    Cleaned the inside of the airbox and checked for anything in there.

    Took off the fuel pressure regulator on the RHS of the tank and took out the bowl with the filter to see if anything clogged in there. All good and gave it a good clean.

     

    Plugs are good and starts easily, even when warm.

    Tappets are okay

     

    Should I redo the TPS setting?

     

    Any advice appreciated

  4. Thanks so much for all of the info.

     

    Another thing I've just discovered is that the battery I have in the V11 is a MotoBatt MBTX12U.

    I see that the recommended is a MBTX30U. Would that have made much difference?

    I haven't used the bike much in the last year or so, it would get up to 6 weeks without being cranked over sometimes.

     

    Just wondering if it really is the starter or whether my battery, so going to get the battery tested.

  5. Heya,

     

    Got an issue with the starting of my '02 V11 Sport.

    It turns over very slowly initially, then if I give it another go, it might do the same, then eventually it will turn over at normal speed. This is cold or hot.

     

    It's like a big radial off a Corsair or B-17 starting.

     

    Is this just the solenoid needing cleaning and regreasing? The V11 had been sitting for quite a while with just occasional starts.

    The gel battery is fully charged and in good condition.

     

    Whatcha think?

     

  6. Well, got the speedo all fixed now.

    Problem was the nylon gear was falling off the back of the speedo into the bevel box and only just making contact with the bevel drive for the cable. Hence the reading up to 30km/h and no more issue.

    Took me a bit to figure that out after stripping down both ends of the cable and numerous testing,..plus completely stuffing one gear !!

     

    What I can tell you is that a 1997 Ducati 900SS Veglia speedo (white face) has the exact same guts inside it as the the Guzzi one (that is including the odo drive). Bought a Duc one pretty cheap and got the drive put in mine. Works a treat.

    The Duc ones would be far more plentiful than the Guzzi ones.

  7. Been doing a few things trying to nut out the problem.

     

    I put the Ducati speedo in temporarily and took it for a test ride to see what would happen.

    It was exactly the same. This all led me to believe the problem is either the cable, the bevel drive attached to the speedo or the connection from the gearbox.

     

    Now the speedo is all in one piece,..and both connections appear to be okay.

    I'm positively stumped now.

     

    Would it be that the speedo needs more magnetism to be calibrated correctly?

  8. Well update time:-

     

    Got the speedo back from the repairers.

    Had the 1997 900SS Veglia speedo odometer gear put into my Veglia speedo.

     

    The odometer seems to work now,...but the speedo seems to only read 1/3 to 1/2 of what it should (ie reads 30km/h instead of riding at approx 60km/h)...

    This surprises me as I believed that the odometer gear wouldn't affect how the speedo ran. Mind you, I'm unsure how accurate the odometer actually is based on hwo the speedo runs.

     

    Any thoughts? Would it actually be possible that the odometer gear out of the Duc speedo would be that much different to the Guzzi one.?

  9. .....and yes mine failed a long time ago. My WOF testing station are telling me I really should get it fixed, so,..off it went to the speedo repairer who took out the remaining chunk of plastic that once was a gear and said "nope can't do it". Not really surprised....

     

    However, before I bore you,..I have another enquiry regarding fixing it.

     

    I was looking at a 1997 Ducati 900SS which has a white -faced Veglia Borletti speedo. It looks very similar. The same dimensions, the same 30, 60, 90 km/h graduations, the same two-screw mounting wholes for the plate, the same cable type..the only difference is the markings that the Guzzi one has to say it's a Guzzi.

     

    How compatible are they? Can I use the guts of that and get the plate of the Guzzi one put in on it's place of the Duc one?

    Or is the internal gearing different, seeing as the Duc cable is wheel-driven and the Guzzi is gearbox-driven?

  10. The regulator is something I know quite a bit about. The one on my V11 Sport was only charging weakly also so I pulled it apart and analyzed the circuit diagram. I made the mistake of unplugged the headlight relay thinking with less drain on the battery the weak alternator would be able to maintain enough charge, of course now I know this was exactly the wrong thing to do.

     

    Alternator Tests

    If you unplug the regulator and measure between the two yellow wires from the alternator you will get 60-80 Volts (I can't remember exactly) with the bike running.

    With the bike off you will get a good circuit (

     

    Regulator Maintenance

    In my opinion a bad ground is what causes the regulators to fail, it fools the regulator into thinking the battery voltage is low so it turns hard on and overloads.

    Your regulator must have a perfect connection to ground. If it has a flimsy wire under one of the bolt heads I recommend supplementing this with a short jumper to one of the timing cover bolts. I actually drilled a hole in one of the fins and attached a jumper directly to that. At the very least remove it to clean and grease where it touches the chassis

     

    Wiring Tests - I assume you have the Ducati Energia

    Slip the black / white plug out a little so it's still connected but you can get your multimeter probe on the black wire pin. With the key on you should measure the battery voltage from there to the chassis, that Voltage is what turns the regulator on to charge the battery and tells it when to cut back.

    The voltage on this pin comes from the headlight relay via a red/black wire that also supplies several of the dash lights. On most bikes the headlight relay depends on the N/O contact of the start relay, you have a 5 pin relay there don't you?

    The red wires connect to the battery via a 35 Amp fuse so you should have a good low resistance from the connector to battery positive. The fuse is something to check also it shouldn't be getting warm, make sure the contacts are tight.

     

    Hopefully by this point you have found the problem, if not the next step is to check the regulator diodes, if 3 cases are enough to go by that's what gives out, refer to attached.

    If you find one of the diodes open, don't start hacking into the regulator, it's quite tricky getting on apart in one piece, I have a work around fix.

     

    Relay Base Contacts

    If you have a loose connection in the base of Start or headlight relay it's possible the regulator is not seeing the correct reference Voltage on it's Black wire but this would result in overcharging not what you are experiencing. Overcharging may cause regulator failure however.
