  2. The resistance test is with sensor disconnected from bike. There is a three pin plug somewhere up along the cable:

But Luhbo's test is better: If the pump runs a little time more after you stop cranking, or if you by other means detect that it does run during cranking, then this sensor is OK.

hey, got some time and checked the phase sensor by cranking the motor and the fuel pump did not prime after cranking, so i removed it and it was swollen like may be burnt out, tested it got nothing on the meter, purchased a new one installed it and got that great sound out of my cut down mistrals that i love to hear, thankx to all for all your help

    ill check that, thankx

  4. As long as the starter turns the engine the bike should start, regardless whether a digital V-meter says 9,8 or 10,2 V. That's my experience.

Question: after turning on the ignition, does the pump prime for 1 or 2 seconds?

Next question: after releasing the starter button, does it run again for 1 or 2 seconds or does it stay quiet?

Question 3: have you really checked whether you have a spark, holding the plug(s) against minus (blank engine part, screw head)?

You have checked the phase sensor now?

    Hubert

pump primes for at least 2 seconds and i will have to check if it still primes after i release the starter button, checked spark with a spark tester, havent got my multi-meter back yet since last week, by the way do you test the sensor with the starter turning?

  5. renato, What's the exact digital voltage of the battery? And then after the lights are on for three minutes?

checked the battery with a yuasa tester, tester says good, multimeter reads 12.58, have not gone as long as 3 minutes, ill give it a try. thankx

  6. Do follow the link which Raz provided you. Good link, btw.

    Hubert

finally had time to swap relays, no go, no spark, just the same starter turns motor and all relays clicking now, anyway do you know were i can get a phase sensor for less than $130.00 or is that a good price

  7. The grease fitting we all see was invented and patented by Oscar Zerk. Arthur Guldborg and his father invented the grease gun while working for for the Alemite Die Cast Co.

Jeez ill send a pic of the hole and the grease gun going in from the rear if i have some time in between fixing my stuff and mowing the lawn and holy bejezus.

  8. I guess you'll be swapping relais still next year. Have you checked the phase sensor? Do you have a Guzzi shop in your next neighbourhood (speaking Guzzi 50 miles would be quite close ;) )

    Hubert

No, im going to check what you told me tomorrow with a meter. thankx

  9. sidestand switch? wires around steering neck under tank, left side can come unplugged?

today i tried to start it and got no spark at all, i tried all the wires and connectors under the tank i unplugged them and replugged them, starter turns and i hear the fuel pump priming also one relay is clicking but no others? there is 5 relays in a row, tried to look for schematics for a 2003 io see witch is witch but did not find one, only 1999 and 2004,different amount of relays , do you know where i can find one? thankx

  10. gonna try cleaning them first, its got me scratching my head, i miss riding my baby

i was just thinking about the relays, the only one i hear is the starter/injector relay, im going to try to push them all up and make sure they are all contacting, hopefully this is the fix, till tomorrow, let ya know

  11. The rear U-joint is easily greased with the rear wheel out. Taking the bevel drive off (simple and easy enough in half a minute with the wheel out) gives full access to the grease fitting on the cross.

I suspect you refer instead to the FRONT U-joint, and not the rear??

If so, the first big Q is -- Can you now access the fitting through the cover? :huh2:

The next big Q is -- If you cut away 3 inches, wot's left of the cover?? Not enough to provide any protection in the event of a U-joint failure it would seem? So why put something without any function left in it back on?? :huh2:

Please advise. After disassembly of the FRONT COVER (swingarm out), with exactly this in mind, I was forced to conclude that drilling a simple access hole for the grease gun would be futile -- without also reversing the U-joint cross in it's trunnions. If you refer instead to the front cover, maybe you've proven me wrong, or maybe your components have different dimensions than mine?? :huh2:

Enquiring minds. . . (well, you know) :sun:

yes front u joint, it was a access hole, and i now have no problems greasing it and you do what to grease the rear u joint? i have no problems with that one, now im confused

  12. Had the same problem, pump runs up etc but just dies and then starts again. I ended up pushing the connectors out of the back of the ECU relay base, solder all wires in the spade connectors and clean the spade connectors, gently prise open the little tag that holds the spade connector into the relay base before pushing them back in to the base. Good Luck

  13. Relais are a good start because they're relatively cheap and easy to swap, even for the natural butcher or baker. On the other hand, they are so simple and undemanding that it's most unlikely for them to fail every now and then.

So, keep the actual relais and instead check the sockets resp. the contacting clamps. And get accustomed to the wiring diagramm. If the pump primes and the starter works and so on then why should it be the relais?

Be aware that such symptoms could be caused also by a bad phase sensor.

    Hubert

how do you tell its gone bad. thankx

  14. Relays have caused the exact same symptoms on my wifes V11. I now carry spare relays whenever we go far from home. And the first time it happened my local dealer already new what was wrong before I finished describing what happened. It is a known fault. The stock relays fail. It is also true that some have had issues with the connectors that the relays plug into, so that is the next place I would look. But if you can be more specific about what happens when it doesn't start (does the fuel pump run, does the starter run, anything clicks?) we could be more specific about what to do.

i hear the fuel pump and i hear relays clicking, starter turns over, ive tried side stand up and messing with the shifter, any how the bike will be running fine at start up when it does start and after a minute or 3 it will just cut out, i checked for spark right after that and get none. thankx

  15. about 2 weeks ago my 2003 v11 sport cut out while i was riding to work, turned the key off checked all fuses and tried again, bike started and rode off to work, while i was at work i changed out all fuses and let it idle for about 2 minutes and all was good, going home all good until about 100 yards from home the bike cuts out again, the next morning checked the spark with a spark tester and no spark, that same afternoon it started again for about a minute then she died again, relays? should i change them all out, if so what brand is better, i like my guzzi and i dont want to get rid of it, if anybody has any info please tell. thankx

  16. Im having a similar problem, turn key and hit starter button nothing, bike in neutral, side stand up or down, ive turned the cutoff switch on and off many times then it will start ????? can it be a bad relay?

  17. moto guzzi seems to keep parts on the shelf for long periods and when rubber parts have been shelfed for to long it tends to fail as with my 03 sport (coil braket n more) not long after i purchased it new. but once replaced i have not had any problem. ive also found vibration dampers from a 91 h.d. sportster oil tank mount are larger, stronger, cheaper and fit just right, sorry i dont have the part number with me
