Sport 1100i - Headlamp alignment problem.

Hi Everyone,

 

My 1997 Sport Injection is due its annual MOT test. Every year I get the same comment from the tester (sometimes followed by a fail certificate): The headlamp beam is too high! In spite of the fact that it is set to point as low as is possible. In fact the bottom edge of the headlamp is hard against the fairing!

 

The only change that I have made since buying the bike, is to drop the yokes so that the fork sliders are 10mm above the yokes - which according to my workshop manual is how they should be. This should have improved the headlamp aim. Also running a 160/60 rear tyre instead of the recommended 160/70.

 

The headlamp bulb is marked:"Osram Bilux 64193 Germany 12V 60/55W". I cannot figure out what the problem is. Has anyone out there had a similar problem with this bike?

Well, that lower profile rear tire is going to lower the back of the bike ever so slightly, which would raise the beam a tad. Can't think it would be enough to get you to fail the test, tho'. Have you check to make sure the bulb is installed right side up? That would be a reason for your low beam to be shining up in the trees & your high beam to be normal... ;)

 

Best of luck, wish I had some helpful suggestion, but short of shimming the back of the headlight housing to tilt the beam down, I can't think of anything remotely pertinent... :huh2:

Have you check to make sure the bulb is installed right side up? That would be a reason for your low beam to be shining up in the trees & your high beam to be normal... ;)

 

There is a locating tab on the bulb that aligns with a slot in the housing, so it can only be fitted in the correct position. It is possible that it is the wrong bulb.. I will order a new one and see if it makes any difference.

The lower edge of the lamp is already hard against the fairing cut out, so it cannot be tilted down any further.

Now that I am considering all possibilities... Is the correct headlamp fitted? The lens has the following markings:

"tri.o.m 40034".

 

Could someone (with a UK model) confirm that is correct?

I'll check the lens marking later and revert. My one suffered the adjusting tab breaking so I stuck on a metal bracket. I believe that they warp with the heat from the 60/55W bulb. Mine has a top surface (definitely dished) which no doubt throws alignment out. My problem though similar is more to do with a mod to the instruments which fouls the headlamp and prevents it "rotating up" at the back to give correct alignment. Presently looking at changing to projectors for the bike as, IMHO, the headlight is utter crap - in design and function.

Thanks for the info. I had heard that the BMW C1 headlamp was the same. There is one for sale on ebay right now, however it does not have the same part number. It is hard to discern the full text from the picture, but it is something like "tri.o.m 2080..."

 

I have to agree with your assessment: is indeed utter crap! If I can't resolve this problem, I might just remove it completeley and get a daylight MOT! I would hardly notice the difference as I only use the bike during the summer months.

How about running the whole caboodle through a bandsaw to get the lens off the pathetic black plastic silvered bit then moulding a new piece to fit with better adjustment? Just a thought... new LHD ones are over £100 - scary, but then it is from Built Minus Wit.

Liked your idea about a projector conversion. Have you scoped out the work involved yet?

 

Alternatively, this round lamp conversion looks good - if you are good at moulding GRP.

I bought the C1 headlamp from ebay. It is NOT the same as the Guzzi part, however it is similar enough to fit. One significant difference - I hope- is the bulb orientation.

I have booked an MOT on Wednesday. Fingers crossed!

 

Edit: Tried to post a picture. No luck!

Update: Passed the MOT! Only after the tester masked off part of the lens with black tape. Maybe the C1 headlamp was not from a UK bike after all.

 

Would still like to do more permanent fix. Maybe a project for the winter.

S'funny that - my ST1100 is a (German?) import and to change the headlight assembly would be expensive so I taped the area off and my sympathetic MOT tester wasn't blinded - all happy. Why bother change out if you don't drive at night? Once I get the projectors sorted out I'll let you see them - long term, back of the bench, at the moment.

Great run today from home to Strathcarron over to Kintail, down to Invermoriston, Fort Augustus, then Inverness via the south side of Loch Ness and into my mums for coffee before a severe wild thrash home. 185 miles and boy do my hips know it!

Current mock up of projectors and trial possible carbon fibre infill. Still not sure of the aesthetics for the front end - wonder if they will fit in the air intakes now I have K&Ns fitted - things that make you go mmmm....
