  1. Thank you for the generous offer! I may very well PM you later in the fall to try and coordinate a little shop time. Funny you have a Duc multi too.  I've had a few phone calls with the guys up at Motocorsa regarding a deal on a 950S multi.  I'm really tempted to sell my faithful little Strom for a multi but haven't been able to mentally get there yet. I'd like to know more about your Duc experience/impressions. I'm currently waiting on my speedo to arrive so I can get the V11 back on the road. Of course I screwed up 2 cylinder head threads (or they may have already been screwed up) when replacing the valve covers after inspection so I'm going to have those repaired at 6V Cycles here in Bend. The shop has great reviews and the owner actually has a handful of old Guzzis himself.  I still prefer to do most of my routine maintenance when I can.

Bend is a great place. Central OR in general is wonderful. The wife and I did an early morning hike up Broken Top mountain yesterday and marveled at how accessible outdoor activities are in this part of the state. I certainly couldn't be door-to-trailhead in less than an hour, a year ago before we moved to Bend from Florida. I can already appreciate how fast this town is growing and I agree that its cover as lesser a known getaway is probably blown. I'm glad I made it under the wire before real estate gets completely out of control.  I've ridden the exact route you mentioned above. It is awesome and makes for nearly a full day of twisties in the saddle. I typically run from 242 to 126 to 19 to 58 east per your route but haven't found a fun way to get back to Bend. I'd love to know what route you take from West Fir back to Bend. Cascade Lakes Hwy is a drone.  Thanks again!

Tom, yes that looks to be the same knob as the one MG Cycles shipped me.  That said, when Joel called me to report my speedo was ready to ship he also offered to make me a new knob which I agreed to. This way I know I have a solution and the backup knob from MG. Will let you guys know how it all works out.

  3. I bought a Timesert thread repair kit for 5.4 Ford trucks that blow out spark plugs . $$$$$  It is a bulletproof kit . GM approves Timesert for Cadillac ( the worst junk rolling ) head bolt repairs .
Fastenal sells a repair kit too . The 6mm kit is a plug that uses a 1/4 20 tap to install .
BTW , I am the king of twisting off , stripping / crossing / boogering up threads .
This is helpful info. There's never a dull moment with these wonderful Guzzis. Thanks for the tips!

  4. Thanks Pete, footgoose and gstallons. Yes, I believe the head sliders are aftermarket. The bolts appear to be the correct length but are a bit shinier than the originals. I was really careful screwing them back in so I suspect they must have already been buggered. The Timesert looks like a good repair but ill try to clean the threads first. Thanks again-

  5. Sorry for another post, but I'm all in on getting to know my new V11.

Well, all was going smoothly this afternoon.... My new MG Cycles shop stand arrived along with fresh valve cover gaskets and new spark plugs. Covers removed, valves inspected - hey they were perfect! New spark plugs gapped and reassembly in progress. Well two of the threads on the right cylinder head got cross-threaded (indicated in the photo). Now I'm super meticulous, starting them by hand and crisscrossing my way around the cover with a torque wrench at 10 NM. Anyhow. Two of the damn threads got cross-threaded. Not sure if they were already buggered or it was me. Anyhow, simple helicoil fix?

Ran great, no leaks but I'm a little OCD and want all bolts properly seated.

I've done valve adjustments on my Griso's, and V7 with no drama but dang these heads seemed soft!98fe1279f015d77c6c5449cef219f162.jpg

  6. I'm curious if there is anyone in Oregon who has experience performing docc's decent tune-up and would be willing to share tools and knowledge?

No problems adjusting valves, installing fresh plugs or changing the oil, but the rest of the procedure has me scratching my head.  I'd enjoy learning more about maintaining my V11, rather than dropping off at a garage in town.  I'm in Central OR, and will be happy to pay with beer, bourbon, fine Italian wine, etc.  Thanks!

  7. Hello all, I just pulled my speedo to send to Joel Levine (odo and tripmeter don't work). Funny that the reset knob was badly broken for some reason. I'll need to find a replacement and have asked Joel if he can replace. Also, the rubber boots that hold each little lightbulb were real buggers to get out of the housing. Any suggestions on how to get them back in once I receive the speedo back?

  8. She's a beauty, well done mate!
I gotta admire you guy's with multiple bikes!
I just got  a good lecture from the minister of war and finance  for adding to my  collection of bike magazines!
I don't wanna go there mentioning a second Guzzi ha ha
    Cheers Guzzler
I dunno, these Guzzis are a bit like potato chips. Tell the minister of finance you could have worse vices!:)

  9. Wow, congrats Tom.  That bike really is near perfection.  Al, great looking bike as well.  I like the Corbin touch.  I'm beginning to feel that I need a LeMans to park next to my Coppa and Griso! They really are very different looking machines.

Does your idle rpm vary a lot from warm to hot? Because mine did. After normal riding for 30min it was 1250rpm, but after a spirited ride through town (lots of stop and go, lots of accelleration) or coming off the highway to a stop, she went down to 1000rpm, which she does not like to idle at.

I've solved this by mastering the Decent Tune Up as quoted by docc. Took me 3 attempts to get right, but the problem has been away for 2 years now.

On the shifting: indeed, sometimes happens to me as well when I ride too "sloppy" or "lazy". Take some time for just those shifts and it will get better. Mine does it now once every 10 rides or so, which does not bother me anymore.:race:

I can't recall what the idle does between warm-up and hot. I need to check that out and report back. Thanks for the tip on the tune up and shift. I need to channel my inner mechanic and figure out how to do that throttle body stuff! Valves and oil changes are no issue:).

How much fuel was in the tank at the time? I've run out of fuel twice in exactly the same location slowing down for a give way sign on a long downhill section( not steep) as soon as I roll through the give way sign and the road goes a little up hill it fires up again. Both times to get me to the servo about 300 metres away.

    Ciao

Full tank of gas.  The only other thing I'm thinking of is that the mechanic who flushed my bike in AZ before shipping indicated there was a "starting problem." He switched the starter and fuel injection relays and thought the starter problem was solved. Perhaps I have a faulty relay?  Not sure since it only happened during deceleration after running fine through the rev range.

  12. Thank you both. Funny tip on loading the lever, gotta love Guzzis.  I didn't know about the Euro valve spec and will check out the FAQ section. Valve cover gaskets are now on order from MG Cycle and an inspection is on schedule!

#1, have you checked valve clearance since you got it? - No, not personally. I did have a Guzzi restorer/mechanic check valves and flush all of the fluids prior to shipping.  He said that they were in spec. Interested to know why this was the first item you suggest checking?

#2, shift with intent. Agreed, I need to be even more assertive with this gearbox!  Thanks for the replies.

  14. Hello All,

I was able to get my V11 out for a proper, spirited shakedown ride yesterday after taking delivery just about 2 weeks ago.  I've had company in town on the weekends, so my riding has been limited.  Anyhow, I went for about a 50-mile ride that included twisties, "fast" straights and provided lot's of shifting opportunities.  It was fairly hot, just over 90 degrees in the high desert of Central OR (approx 3,500 ft of elevation).  I absolutely love this bike.  Probably even more than my GRiSO at least for the moment during the honeymoon period.  There were really only 2 hiccups that require some investigation (with a full tank of gas):

    1. After a few miles with the wick up, I slowed down at an intersection and the bike just completely died.  I decelerated normally as I approached the stop sign and the bike completely cutout.  I re-started it with a push of the starter and a blip of the throttle.  I accelerated away without drama.  The bike did this one more time at a different intersection.  Died, re-started, then operated normally.  Thoughts?

    2. I hit a few false neutrals up-shifting form 2nd to 3rd.  This happened maybe 2 or 3 times but wasn't easily replicated.  The shift from 2nd to 3rd doesn't seem as positive as the rest of the gears but normally shifts OK.  Common?

Thanks for any thoughts or advice you have on this,

    Chris

If you do get photos of the bag, please start a new brief thread of the tail rack mounted, and the bag unmounted & mounted for posterity if someone asks again and searches.  I have some photos of the rack unmounted and its hardware I can then upload to the same thread.

I'll be happy to if I can get a bag:)
