I spite of my encouragement to go to the trouble to condition the Odyssey to get the most out of it, and take the load off of our nefarious charging system, an 80% PC545 has still been a vastly better performer for me than any other "power sports" battery I've ever seen or owned.

A quote from the movie Stripes popped in my head - we are willing to learn! LOL! This has been my 1st time using an Odyssey and it has remained in a consistent state even when not on a tender or should I say a specific tender for the Odyssey because I haven't gotten around to ordering one yet...

  2. Thank you Doc for again helping me find my way, I feel I am no longer lost and back on track in the conversation. LOL. My heart was in the right place, maybe not my brain?

I have found your information and tips to be absolutely spot on, a great help.

About your experience with whoever you said you had a problem with. good for you, We all shop around. Amazon has it for $109 with free delivery, but I have bought at Autozone too, it's right around the corner from me and sometimes they are the cheapest especially with the coupons and the credit you get back from your old battery

I went with the Odyssey, I'm still not convinced it's not the exact same battery as the Spark.

Also I would not use this person ever again if they don't know which battery to get you or they are trying to rip you off.

Sorry to hear. I do my research on what fits a particular bike and this group is excellent for information, then I order online and have it delivered or pick it up at Batteries Plus. A quick side by side comparison should tell you.

Looks like your seat pan is sitting a bit hard on your battery, @Guzzimax. I had to round a sharp corner on mine to save the battery strap.  Also, the front of the battery basket can be mounted under the subframe to make clearance.

Hey Doc, how much do you gain by that, about 1/4 inch? Can you add spacers to lower even more? After your observation I checked my strap and sure enough it's wearing by the front

  6. I'm a newbie to this group, but when I was looking I for a V11 I checked out the Scura at a dealership in Vegas that has been for sale for awhile. I was not impressed with the matte black, no offense, just not a matte black fan.  Didn't help that this particular bike was ratty looking up close. yours however with the gloss black and red seat is quite the looker! Good luck

the standard model V11 clutch assembly on most models is a dual plate clutch with a steel flywheel.

the factory Guzzi V11 "lightened" clutch assy on special models is a single plate clutch with an aluminum flywheel. The problem is with the alm flywheel. It isn't strong enough to handle stress. It can (and should) be replaced with the standard dual plate/steel assembly or an aftermarket lightened steel assembly.

Are you saying I should be looking for a complete setup with the steel flywheel and dual plate? Ouch! I'm not sure I'm confident in replacing it myself. What would a shop cost? Someone mentioned a used steel one on ebay, is this something I should buy to keep when I'm ready to install or have installed?

Its got an aluminum flywheel..I saw it through the hole and checked it with a magnet..They weren't " 2 totally different materials"..the articles he is referring to were regarding different  quality "Venders" and manufacturing process's very early  on, just on the Mandello's.-_-

Oh so the quality of the 'materials' weren't different, just the quality of manufacturing? Maybe I miss understood. Now because my memory is not what it used to be did you mention something about them 1st used for racing applications?

  9. Recently purchased #49 of 300 2001 Rosso Mandello from a member here. 24K on the bike. He mentioned that the materials were different in those single plate clutch's. Crossing my fingers because that is one of the items we discussed before purchase and it looks like he researched it. He bought the bike from his neighbor, between the 2 of them they didn't put many miles on her. The original owner took meticulous notes on his maintenance and parts replacement over the 19 years he owned it. Never a mention of the clutch. Only mention of blowing the 30 amp fuse a few times and replacing the regulator and adding an extra ground wire from the regulator to the battery

This really is a good reminder to inspect that 30 amp fuse regularly. They are known to melt, char, or even burn off a blade without "blowing" the fuse itself. The consensus has been the fuse connections are an electrical "choke point" for the charge amperage and prone to excessive heat. I struggled with this for so long before I converted to an aircraft grade circuit breaker. This makes it a *snap* to disconnect for charging sessions.

I am also operating under the theory that keeping the PC545 "conditioned," and the regulator grounded to the engine, gives the V11 charging system less need to push 20-25 amps back to the battery. Expecting our V11 charging system to bring a hefty PC545 back up from 12.5 volts (50%!) may be expecting too much; and adds up to a formula for charging system failures, IMO.

i have been reading your older thread on this Doc, thank you good stuff. Just a question. Are you saying we would be better off with a standard battery instead of the Odyssey to avoid the 'meltdown'?

Simple enough, then! Back in with fuse and do the voltage check that Lucky Phil posted at about 2500 rpm looking for 13.8-14.2 volts.

FWIW, I always disconnect my regulator from the battery when charging. As I recall, EME (where I get my regulators) emphasizes this procedure.

Success! Got the correct voltage check at rpm's. Took her for a nice 20 minute ride yesterday afternoon and all looks good so far. Battery reading 12.9 this morning about 12 hours sitting.

Actually I remember now..after having the bike in my garage a few months  I pulled the fuse before putting it on the charger as I had read that is a good idea..and simply forgot to put it back in ( I had 3 V-11's at the time and lots of stuff on my benches..including spare from the tool kit, I remember finding a lose30 amp and just figuring it came out of the tool kit...( my memory is for Sht these days)..Not to worry it wasn't intentionally pulled becasue it was blowing and sold to you with that knowledge..I'm not that sort of guy. Thats probably what the root of your charging issue is..just that fuse...everything else was new before I got the bike from Surj.

Thank you Paul for weighing in! That's a big relief. I also found about 10 30 amp fuses in the tail cubby hole. I guess this is why I was having charging issues. I'll put one in and check the charging readings. I also should charge the Odyssey again using my 10amp charger.

A ring terminal left off either the positive or negative side could negate the charging. Also, inspect the green 30 amp charging/regulator fuse in the fuse block.

Observe if the headlamp, stop lamp, horn, and tach are all working normally. A faulty Relay#2 (or #1 on the early Sports) can impede charging. When the relay(s) are the fault, the warning light also fails, IIRC.

Next most common charging issue might be a failed yellow wire soldered connection coming off the stator under the alternator cover (hard to see!). Mine did this twice

Doc, do you mean like a missing 30amp fuse? WTH! why would anyone pull that fuse? Paul (KINDOY2)? Thank you Peter

  14. Went out for a sunset ride with my buddy tonight. 15 minutes into it the V11 starting to stumble and as I pulled over died. No warning lights. Would not even click when hitting the starter button. After a few minutes it started to click when trying to start like the battery was trying to regenerate. Trailered her home and got 10.8 volts from the battery. Have the Odyssey battery charging and now she slowly turns over. So you know I was having problems with my Odyssey battery. Today it read 12.8 before heading out. The date on the battery is June 2020. Should be good. I'm suspecting a charging issue. PO said the voltage regulator and alternator was replaced. So where do i start? When running the reading on battery was not above 12, might have even been 11.8. Do I start with a new battery or go straight to the charging system? Did i buy a bike with gremlins, oy!!!!

Do the connectors/cap screws contact the seat base Chuck?

    Ciao

Let's hope not! I just ordered the L brackets, but got the ones that look a little beefier
