  1. Incidentally it seems that the price of stainless has recently gone up for some reason so the plates *may* be more expensive, I haven't yet got the quote. If I do them in mild steel, (and this is an application where it would be fine, it's esentially invisible from the outside of the motor and runs immersed in oil!) they will be cheaper but I'll get the quotes and work out a price first and ask before I decide.

    Pete,

Does it matter that thermal expansion rates match between the oil pan and the slosh plate? Typical aluminum changes about .000012*length/(degree C.) more than typical carbon steel, which would smear the gasket by about .008inch,(.15mm), over a 100 degree C. range, at the corners of a 10inch square gasket. Could this make the gaskets leak?

304 stainless would smear about .004inch.

    Here are some numbers:

    aluminum: (23*10^-6)l/(degree C)

    stainless: (17.3*10^-6)l/(degree C)

    mild steel: (10.8*10^-6)l/(degree C)

    from here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coefficient_o...ermal_expansion

    Here's how I got the .008inch:

    [(coeff Al)-(coeff Fe)]*(100C)*(14inch diagonal across 10 inch square)/2

= total smear of .016inch diagonal, or .008inch/corner.

  2. If I remove the cover, I assume I need to clean the mating surfaces and apply new sealant.

Is Permatex Hylomar HPF OK or is there a better choice when reinstalling the cover?

I just made it to 100 miles and feel the urge to check for the correct 15mm boss and to change to Redline.

    Thanks,

    Troy

  3. I'd also like to pursue a dealer/shop or an individual that has resources to get a part from Europe/Britain as long as the shipping isn't too absurd. Perhaps the European distributorship is a little more competent. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Leon

I'd like to put in a good word for HMB-Guzzi.

Michael Behrendt delt directly with me via email to deliver a timing chest cover. It arrived with a new oil seal already installed as well, to my surprise.

I assume the ZFAS-S2 is not readily available to consumers now that I've read your post.

Here's what I had planned to ask:

    --------

What's the story on the plugged 10mm holes on the V11S exhaust pipes? Does Guzzi use some special tiny O2 sensors for tuning at the factory? The O2 sensors I find available seem to use the 18mm thread, but The ZFAS-S2 uses 12mm. See it here:

Could the Guzzi 10mm holes be opened up and threaded for 12mm?

    -------

So I guess this is a mute question.

Todd, Thanks for the prompt reply.

My Piersburg pump developed a short. I cut the aluminum can with a pipe cutter at 7/8" from the output end of the pump and it came apart with no damage to the components. This thing is a work of art on the inside. If I can clear the short I might try to seal it up and use it again. I think Piersburg makes good stuff and I just got unlucky. However, they warn against running the pump dry, which I'm prone to do when I forget to open the petcock.

    Best regards,

    Troy

  6. I'm ISO a Guzzi part number and a likely USA source for the external fuel pump, Piersburg 02T077, 7.21287.03, for an early '03 V11S.

I expect Guzzi to want my first born son in payment, so I'm looking into a generic replacement as well.

    Thanks,

    Troy

  7. Dan, reading your post, I just tried the Icycle order again - no go. . . . I give up. :huh2:

If you have any patience left for ICYCLESUSA, they have another 32mm wrench near the end of Closeouts, page 2, for $4.99.

I can get to it from the homepage, ( http://www.icyclesusa.com/ ), by searching on ( X-Axis Headset Wrench ) and choosing option 121B for the 32mm size.

Unless you fab up a custom wrench, or happen to have an ultra-thin specialty wrench on hand, the top triple clamp has to come off for access. If you find one available somewhere, please do advise!"

Here's a thin 32mm wrench on sale for $8.00. It looks like 8-side, but one might grind the back out to make it 6-side.
