Hey All,
As a very new V11 Sport owner, I was hit by a bit of character on SUnday when out with the missus. The speedo simply stopped working. I tested all the parts using a cordless drill on anti-clockwise rotation to get enough speed to get the needle moving.
It looks like the cable is 100% fine and the clock itself. The Black plastic gearing that mounts on the gearbox seems to be the troble. I took it apart only minimally (removing the two pins) and gave it a good old clean and lube and rebuilt it. The pin which connects to the cable seemed to click in and I tested the gearing by attaching the gearbox drive pin to the drill. Hey presto it worked!
So as always a great excuse for a test ride...1.4 miles later no speedo
Is this a common V11 fault. I suppose I need to buy a new gearbox to cable black palstic thingy right?
Still the using a cordless drill to diagnose the problem made life super easy.
Cheers
Pete
Yes - it is one of the known, common faults - the OEM speedo was crap.
If it is still "working" (not totally f'd) then there is a fix - search for it, I think Greg Field posted about it.
I blew up mine on a long trip a few years ago at about 10,000 miles, but luckily I had scheduled a service at my next stop - MPH in Houston. Todd had a new speddo there, and Mike put it in and did the other things I needed, and off I went. no problems since then.

Having not heard anything from the dealer who has my Coppa, I just called them.
The good news is - they ordered the parts the day I dropped off the bike (May 31). The bad news is - they have no idea when the parts will arrive, and they say no tracking number is given to the dealer for tracking purposes.
Is this SOP?
If so, what is the "usual" travel time from Mandello (or wherever they'd order bearings, axles and brackets), to the US?
Hi Sean,
If you only need rear wheel bearings there are lots of places to get them quicker and for a lot less money than from Moto Guzzi. Lots of guys get them at auto parts stores or a local bearing supplier. I posted the info on where I got mine in this thread:
The original poster said he ordered his from MG Cycle. If your shop won't source some locally thay could always go that route.
PS I've used the Pit Posse bearing tool that I mentioned in that thread a few times now and it works great. Much quicker and easier than using a punch.
Thanks, Tom.
I did find it odd that they ordered from the Motherland, because I had already seen that they were available from MG, and I'm sure Harpers has them too - just not listed on their site.
if they try to fleece me on price, i will definitely direct them to MG, where the bearings are listed with their prices. I've actually already written down the part # and the price so I can see what the difference is. If it is negligible, so be it. If it is radical - then I'll have no qualms bringing it to their attention.
It seems quite silly to me - especially since buying them locally (well, US, anyway) would radically cut down on delivery time, shipping costs, etc. Customer's always right - until he isn't.

I had an almost identical failure 2 weeks ago coming home from a Rally.
My bike ('04 Coppa) has about 18,000 miles on it.
EDIT:
oh yeah, I bought the center stand from Moto International a couple years ago. it was very simple to install, it bolts right on.

I wrote in last year asking if anyone had engine performance issues as I thought my engine ran rough between up to 3,000rpm. It has the factory race ECU, Titanium cans and the emission control sytem had been removed by the previous owner.
Since then it's been into MPH in Houston twice to see if they could smooth her out, but with limited success, it's a Guzzi thing I'm told witht his model.
Basically when progressing through the gears up to 3,000rpm it lacks smoothness, not at all happy, feels like it's missing or the fuelling isn't right and sometimes I get a "pop" from the exhausts.
I've been told that I should keep it around 3,500-4,000rpm to prevent this while using in built up areas, although that would mean keeping it in the low gears, which just doesn't seem consistent for a bike designed to be a street bike, even with the fatory mods.
I've owned many bikes and this is the first time I've come across this type of thing when the engine is warmed up, I'm told is adjusted correctly and has only covered 6,000 miles.
Do any other owners have this same issue, is it normal that it dislikes low revs so much?
Any insight greatly appreciated
Thanks
Fraser
Fraser-
I've got the same bike, with the same equipment (and a few other mods), but even when I had it set up identically to yours, it didn't exhibit the symptoms (lack of smoothness and popping) you describe. That said, I'll echo what everyone else has said here - these engines weren't made to lug at 2200-3200 RPM. They are happiest in the 3800-6000 range. I rarely ride mine at fewer revs than 3500.

At the risk of losing this thread to another site - I present to you:
Battle of the Racks! Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like - you vote for your preferred rack in hooter to hooter competition.

If I didn't already have the V11, I might entertain the thought.
As it is now, however, the Norton would be too similar to what I've already got in the Coppa Italia.

just their version of a BMW Z3 hatchback.

broken pipes are bad, hmmkay?
good thing this guy's garage was AAA Approved, right?
-
well, crap.
I can't seem to get it to work.
Sorry about that fellas.
I guess kodak gallery changed their settings, and I haven't been on their site in a long time, so I don't know how to remedy it.

It is stock, or it could be something guzzi had lying around, anyway it came on the bike, looks like a carbon fibre/check weave.
Doesnt make it any comfier.
Yep-
looks like this:

VA Sean, If you have a moment, could you please repost the photo. The link in the original photo is broken. thanks
See if this one works-

Hmm - not sure what happened. I'll see if I can find the pics to repost them.

Speedo - the OEM were pieces of shit. Expect it to fail and that you'll have to replace it.
Mine crapped out somewhere in Texas at appx. 8,000 miles on the clock.
The hum you hear when you turn the ignition is the fuel pump - that is normal.
The rest sounds like there is a short in the wiring, and it is fine when the bars are cocked to one side, but it is exposed (shorting) when it is not. Check for fraying.

Nice report!
Yeah - the seat can be a bit tiresome on long days.
I bought an airhawk and now I can ride all day in comfort.
Enjoy your Coppa -- I know I enjoy mine!

I've got one.
Bought "new" in 2005.
16,000 miles.
I have pretty much all the goodies I want on it:
Roper Slopper
Factory Ti Kit
Mistral crossover
H+B bags
Center stand

Before you start hacking, put on a crossover. Much less money than mufflers and it will incease sound some.
Totally agree. My Mistral X-over made a world of difference ... 'course, I also have factory Ti cans, but I could tell a big difference between the stock X-over and the Mistral, which I added after putting on the Ti cans.

That luggage rack doesn't look like any commercial product I've seen so far?

My pipes had a tiny bit of mung that was like a tiny spot weld holding the OEM crossover to the pipe.
I had to break that before I could remove the crossover.
I agree with the above -- removing the pipes from the jugs makes the job much easier.

If you like to stick with Metzler, the Roadtecs last about 2x as long last the Sportecs -- but that ain't saying much... maybe 7,000 - 8,000.
