  1. Good idea, docc.

Here's another procedure from the How To section, which seems to be technically thorough. However, note that the "My comments" are my personal edits, for my own file.

I would like to see a response to these comments, and any superseding understanding of Jeff's comments with the result being a comprehensive, thorough, anc accurate procedure/explanation.

“How to Balance the Throttle Bodies, with pictures, even”, in the How To section

allow me to offer these comments. the air bleeds are not there to adjust the idle mixture, that is what the CO trimmer is for in the factory software. Idle Mixture Screw: This is located in the computer under the rubber plug, which is covered by the Moto Guzzi labeled decal. It's a tiny screw on a trim potentiometer; use an eyeglass screwdriver. The full range of adjustment is 270 degrees and clockwise is leaner, CCW is richer. The air bleeds are to be used for idle speed adjustments. A more proper procedure is to:

    1. set TPS with everything backed off and disconnected (My comment: this means with the right throttle butterfly closed, idle screw, connecting rod and choke cam backed off) to the correct 150mv value

    2. balance throttlebodies using the throttle stop screws with the air bleeds screwed in and the linkage unhooked so that the TPS reads the correct value as indicated in the service manual (3.4 deg +/- .2 deg, roughly 500-525mv) This is so the ECU is now set up so it knows the throttle plates are in the correct position for idle so all the mapping vs. throttle angle works out correctly. Your idle at this point will probably be be BELOW 1000 rpm and rather rough. (My comment: An alternative is to first balance the butterflies with the air bleeds screwed in, but then set the airbleeds to ½ turn open to raise the idle speed to 1100 RPM and check the TPS reading.)

    3. open airbleeds and use them to balance to achieve the final appropriate idle speed of around 1100 rpm. Your idle should have smoothed out now. The factory manual goes out of its way to state the airbleed screws are there to set your idle speed. You will find that your airbleeds will end up being around 1/2 turn open as stated in the factory manual.

    4. Adjust the linkage so that it can be reassembled without having to open one of the throttlebodies more than the other - that is, the socket on the link should drop back on the ball without having to move anything.

    5. NOW rev your bike up and synch using the white knob. You might find that of you took great care in step 4, that the white knob has to be turned very little if any at all.

    6. NOW use the factory software and a CO meter to set the correct idle mixture. In a pinch without a CO meter, you can set the trim like a mixture screw on a carb by adjusting it up and down to achieve the best quality of idle. That is why the software is needed - it is used to set the idle mix, NOT the airbleeds.

    Great information!

I have a spin-off question that I hope you can help me with. I need to use my choke to keep the bike idling. This is a recent development. I have a PowerCommander, that I have not touched, and the bike runs great, except for the idle.

Can I use the idle mixture screw to set the idle speed?

  2. Sorry but I have not installed anything like this in my bike. I have however considered doing it in the past so, if you don't mind, I would very much like to hear your impressions of the mod. In particular, does it make your engine ping, do you notice performance gains/losses in the low-end, midrange, or high end of your engines power band? There has been much debate on this board regarding the benefits/wisdom of this mod. I have steered away from it myself but not ruled it out completely.

Any input after you are done is appreciated.

I installed the pistons, oversized valves, power commander and bored the heads. No pinging. Lots of power. I have a dyno chart on the site.

The bike is a great smooth ride.

  3. ... I won't involve myself in anything close to what seems to have sparked this off again.

My promise to all, with sincere apologies to Jaap and the Forum for my part in the whole mess. -_-

    Most humble regards,

    RH

    Ratchethack,

Thanks for stepping forward and taking responsibility for your actions. I'd hate to lose this forum. It is an excellent resource.

There aren't very many forums managed as well as Jaap does this. My son and a few friends are getting ready to start a site and have visitied V11 to get some ideas about getting started, features, and content management. Their response was "WOW, somebody did it alone." They realize the complexity of the project they are starting and the regular work they have ahead of them to do it right.

We have a really good thing with this forum! I know we think it, but we need to say it and act on it too.

I am not as frequent a visitor as I'd like to be, but every visit has always been an enjoyable and learning experience.

    Cheers for Jaap!

  4. HEY YALL

WILL THIS BIKE PING ON 87 OCTANE GAS

    THANKS

    BIGGERJIM

Yes. I made the mistake. I use 87 in the cars and wasn't paying attention to what I was doing.

    Go 92 or better.

  5. My absolutely perfect all stock 2004 Lemans will be going on eBay Oct 17 2007 at 8:00 AM PST. Pictures are in the classified section. This is very sad but at least someone else will know the pleasure of the Guzzi.

My wife asked me to do the same thing. Kids are not the issue. She doesn't understand why I need two of them. So, I've been trying to sell one for the past 6 months. I still have the two and she is not pushing. Eventually, though...

What was the final bid, if I may ask?

  6. I just got my Shoei Multitec today & I like it. I havent gone very far with it yet but everything works very well. When you close the flip lid down the steel pins make a very nice high quality click. Wind noise at 60mph is reasonable, on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd rate the noise level at a 7 or 8 if 10 is the most quiet. Comfort is very good as well. I'll post more as I play with it & ride with it more.

    Is this your first fliptop?

  7. You are going really like the X11. That is my present helmet. The cooling vents work very well especially on the LeMans. I also find it very quiet. I was wearing an Arrow (Jamo) before that but I find the modulars too noisy on the Goose. The modular works ok on the Concours but it has a whole lot more windshield.

    :mg:

Thanks for the info. I'm feeling better about the price tag. It is hard to find something that vents AND is quiet.

    Cheers! :bier:

  8. Shoei Z-two, pearl white, 5 years old.

I am going to get another Shoei in the fall, the lighter X-11. The Z-two was replaced by the RF-1000. It is a shame because the removable padding is still very good, but the external shell shows too many dings from the rocks thrown by cars and trucks. It vents well, is very good about keeping the sound out, but I still wear ear plugs.

  9. Well winter has finally set in very well here in Ohio. I havent ridden the bike in over 2 weeks & theres no break in sight. The high temps the next two days are in the 20's. After that the highs will only be about 10 degrees for a while. Well on the positive side, I have plenty of time to save money for that new helmet I've been wanting! Here in Ohio we can either have a fairly mild February or it can be just as brutally cold as the rest of the winter. So far its looking pretty bad. I havent even been out to the garage to look at the bike let alone start it up. Besides I've read that its not a good idea to start the motor when its very cold anyway.

Yet another reason to like Florida :D

  10. 48 hours ago, it was 74˚ F. Now it's 21˚ F and there's a foot of snow outside my door. Snowed in today. Had to blow off $70 worth of tickets to a jazz concert in Tulsa because of the storm and even the damned Ural can't get out of my garage. Probably won't make it to work either. Even if I had a snow shovel - which I don't - I'm not going to shovel 4000 feet of gravel road. Not gonna happen...

I guess it is out of the question for a neighborhood kid to come knock'n and offer to shovel for $10. What a swing in the weather.

  11. Wet and windy here. Weather is not much cop either!

I'm off camping in Cumbria on the bike this weekend with a local bike club- will be wearing a very warm beer jacket.

    Guy :helmet:

Today was 70F and sunny, absolutely gorgeous. As I was leaving the gym the evening sky was starting to cloud-up. Weather guys are saying it will be low 30's when the rain stops tomorrow.

  12. The red LeMans was bought December 2005 and has the remainder of its 2-year full coverage factory warranty. It has 3,106 highway miles. Dealer (Ferracci) installed power commander III, custom map, carbon fiber exhaust, x-pipe, large airbox, oversized intake and exhaust valves, high compression pistons (from 9.8:1 to 11:1) and ported heads. I've installed stainless steel shims in the front cross-over that are reusable. This enables me to change between exhaust systems :luigi: .

The bike is fun, smooth ride :D . It gets 43.6mpg @ 85mph. The gas tank holds 5.5 gallons. The bike is in new condition, and has had its scheduled 600 mile break-in check-up and a 1200 mile service to tune the mapping.

The V-twin provides plenty of torque and speed :bike: . I am asking $10,200.

  13. I added a Power Commander to my '03 LM (big air box and the Bard shims, but otherwise it’s a stock bike) and had it mapped. I get better gas mileage, added some HP and torque, and lost a lot of vibration (unexpeted). Also, there is big difference using gel gloves and not overly gripping the bar. I tend towards the white knuckle grip as I get tired riding.

  14. has anybody any experience of using the Ventura bike rack system on a V11 Le Mans.at the moment i am using Teckno bags but i find these restrictive when carrying a pillion. i am getting ready for our trip to Mandello for the GMG. Regards Jim.

Love the system  . I have it installed on both of my bikes ('03 and '04 Le Mans.)

  15. Anyone up for a ride around South Mountain, Lake Lure Morganton, Linville area this week?  I was planning on heading up from Charlotte early on Tuesday. PM me. Chris
