  1. At zero speed or low radial acceleration, it sure as hell does. Toss you bike on its side and start it up. See that I speak the truth.
Truth perhaps, but in the context of this discussion you've managed to nimbly sidestep the sublime and jump straight to the absurd. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. Just sayin'.

Sheesh. You'd think it was the first of April around here.

  2. Yup, it's possible and in many cases quite easy. The oil pick up is in the front right hand (? this is from memory at 4.30AM.) corner of the sump. Uphill and banking to the left is the most risky. It's a problem that Guzzi finally, obliquely, acknowledged with the launch of the Breva/Griso/Norge motors which have a far better sump design.

Yes, there is a cure, but since I'm the one that designed it I always get accused of venal motives and charlatanry when I mention it.

    Pete

Pete, banking has zero effect on oil position in the sump. His question regarded a grade steep enough to expose the oil pick up. You guys are waaaay out in left field encouraging his paranoia.
  3. I would like to hear comments and technical opinions about the possibility of exposing the oil pick-up while assending a steep grade. Assume that the oil level in the crankcase is at the high mark on the dipstick with the dipstick screwed in and the bike on level ground and upright. What degree of grade would cause the oil pick-up to be exposed and result in the loss of oil pressure?
If you find a grade that steep, you'd better have knobbies mounted.
  4. Soooo ... looks like it's Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Rossi as class of the field right now. Next group is Dovisioso, Hayden and Hopkins. wrt Hopkins, he's getting faster as he heals and with Kawasaki "screamer" engine due to arrive soon (fwiw Honda's pneumatic delayed again) - Hopkins could move into that top three grouping making it a 4 rider, 3 manufacturer dance. A little early to rule out Stoner, but with his recent spate of problems, and no one else on the Ducati able to run any kind of competitive lap, I suspect the Ducati is no longer the premier bike out there. Remains to be seen if Stoner can be competitive on a lesser bike.

I've got to believe Ant West is soon out as Kawasaki #2 rider. Melandri may be fired by Ducati as well. Thought it was interesting listening to the announcers opine De Puniet may also be done if he doesn't stop crashing. He is an unguided missile at times. I suspect the announcer chatter wrt De Puniet reflects talk in the pits.

Here's how they stacked up in post-Estoril testing. Lorenzo did not participate.

  5. With traction control, ultimately all the rider would have to do is sit & point it in right direction, if it's not about rider judgement & throttle control, then that's a big part of riding a bike gone. Why not race em on ovals & be done with it.

    KB :sun:

Skin tight leather wrapped diminutive nancy boyz on tiny bikes, eh? Little more than monkeys in a space capsule.

It'll never play in America, home of the oval.

Ah yes - I remember back when men were men and bikes were ... well ... not. :D

On a more serious note - Euro style racing has now moved up from 125 and 250 to reign supreme at the Moto GP level. Is that a good thing? Yes if you've always loved watching swarms of little wheezers flitting about lap afer lap.

No longer does one "graduate" to moto gp. Rather, moto gp has been dumbed down to let anyone who could ride a wee bike fast climb aboard and go whee! :nerd:

Ah, I'm just kidding. Maybe. Maybe not.

  6. Thanks.

Be careful. 3 P.M. Pacific is 6 P.M. here on the east coast and the TV Guide shows that Speed channel is airing the 250cc GP at that time. I did a little more checking and it looks like the MotoGp is showing at 10 P.M. Eastern time (7 P.M. Pacific).

You might want to check it out.

Will do. Worst case, may have to sip whiskey a little longer - I start at 3:00, racing or no racing. :bier:

Whoa! Check out the grid for tomorrow's race! three Yams on front row, and Rossi not aboard any of 'em.

    Let the season begin!

  7. Does anyone know if the race is being televised in the U.S.?

If so what time and network is carrying it? I just check TV Guide and they show the 250s on at 6:00 PM Sunday on the Speed Channel. Can't find a listing for the MOTOGP.

    Help!!

    Thanks

Moto GP is on Speed tomorrow (Sunday) at 3:00 PM pacific. Speed is Cox cable 56 in San Diego. Speed schedule here: http://www.speedtv.com/schedule/filter/dat...3-9/timezone/pt
  8. How many years have we been waiting for that report?
Hey! I resemble that remark.

Looks like last week in March before Louie's dyno schedule and my schedule line up. It would be easier if he were just down the street, but it's a couple hundred miles each way, give or take.

Meanwhile, don't you have several pages of calculations regarding the flex, twist and compression properties of neoprene you can review while waiting? :nerd:

  9. Your findings will be interesting, you know.

I asked because I once ran into similar problems, but only at WOT, above 7800 and when trying to reach ARF 12.5, and, interesting enough, only with open race cans. In these regions those cans really make a difference. Compared to those my actual Ex-Box is delivering fuel :)

    Hubert

Got it back. Filter very plugged. Pump running extremely loud - so replaced it. On exmination, internal of pump filled with reddish "crud". Certainly appears the "crud" not only strangled fuel flow, but led to the death of the pump. This is the symptom I'd hoped to find, easy diagnosis and easy fix - though $260 for a new pump isn't exactly "easy" on the wallet.

Scheduling another dyno date as soon as I can. Will post charts when I have 'em.

  10. I like that.

Have thought about getting bars and a different screen - back, wrist issues.

Yeah, I know, should get an EV or something.

    Or a Stelvio?

Stelvio will probably be the ticket for most. My buddy loves his multistrada.

Still, for making the V 11 more civil - the parabellum looks like a nice option. Frank Wedge did a lot more than jsut bars and add-on screen. the pegs are lower and more forward as well. A real "gentleman's" sport tourer - but a very nice ride from all accounts.

I like seeing people use the spine for a touring platform. I think it's still their best handling - and certainly lightest - big bore Guzzi ever.

  11. Don't take the comments too seriously ALdad,

We're all a bit quirky around here. :bier:

By the way, what mirrors are you running, and where'd you find them?

I always though Frank Wedge's interpretation of a Le Mans sport tourer was the way Guzzi should have gone. Here it is at the 2004 national:

That said, I really like the look of whast you've done with the Parabellum. Just not sure I want all that hanging on the forks.

  12. Pardon the possible naivety in my question, but will they race the famous banking and all or will the track be different ?

I know a few people who raced bikes there and they say that banking is just the most insane thing possible on a bike....

Not all the banking. They've taken the F1 layout and rearranged / rebuilt it. Here's a map:

  13. I thought it was t-boning another rider(your title rival and/or team mate) to win the title.

Stoner is the right man on the right bike at the right time. He is immensely talented but known to right checks for talent he could not cash(causing crashes). Now he is on a bike with overdraft protection.

Do I think he's the best rider out there? No. But winning a title is not just a matter of being the best rider. If it was KRJR would never have won a title. It is being the right rider on the right bike at the right time and Stoner is that.

On a different note, who if anybody is going to MotoGP at Indy?

Yes, in large measure I agree - right rider, right bike, right time. Sometimes a rider comes along who throws that into a cocked hat - Rossi of a few years back the most recent - but by and large I agree.

I'm going to the GP in Indy. Will fly into Chicago and rent Sportster for the ride to / from Indy. My tix http://tinyurl.com/2m2p8c include a parade lap - though not on race day. :huh2:

  14. I just can't believe how much time and energy is spent (imo wasted) on the cush drive rubber's technical specs.

I think I'm going to ride tomorrow: 13 degrees and partly clouded. :race: Springtime!!! And Sunday it will be even better ^_^

Well, enjoy your ride Jaap. :bike: I do hope you don't hammer your drive line into submission before this cush thingie gets sorted.
  15. After the initial big bore was created by mr merani's company, he contacted Guareschi. Guareschi thought it would be nice to race with that, ...

    ...

There was another mgs01 active. The one from millepercento. They did see the potential of the bigbore too, ...

I could see this upgrade becoming popular ...

popular enough that MG would bring it in-house like they did with the Ghezzi-Brian MGS ...

    where it would languish ...

    and die ...

    like the MGS.

Here's hoping MG keeps their incompetent hands off it.

  16. What fueling issues did you ran into exactly? Was it at high loads/ high RPM? Probably, but then, have you already thought of rising the fuel pressure? Anyway, if you have to go this way this will not necessarily improve driveability for low load/transition conditions.

    Hubert

None initially. I got three full-throttle power pulls (1 for each chip I'd brought along) in, and no evidence of issues.

Thereafter began mapping and the injectors (both) began going into 100% duty cycle (and a/f would go to max) as RPM's increased. Thought maybe it was heat related, so let the bike cool. Tried again but the issue was still there, but at even lower RPM.

Concluded it was a plugged fuel filter, or that both injectors had gotten plugged. Bike did sit for a considerable period of time and I didn't flush the system before taking it to the dyno.

Sean at MGC is looking at it now to see what he can find. I hope the filter is filthy with crud - easy fix. If not, then will need to look at fuel pressure, dying pump or bad injectors. FWIW - the injectors are upgraded from stock so according to the supplier should handle anticipated flow no problem. That's why, when they went to 100% at modest RPM, we concluded it was fuel delivery, not undersized injectors. That, and the fact the symptom didn't show up until the bike had been run hard for several minutes.

Sean was racing this past weekend, so he'll be swamped with work for a few days. Hopefully he'll have an answer and a fix for it later this week. Then I''ll go run it again.
