As Carter tells it, in three laps Roberts managed to go a second a lap faster than either Carter or Rainey had done at Paul Ricard in practice. The pair "nearly got the sack on the spot" when Roberts returned.

I remember reading a story about Joel Robert when he rode for the CZ factory team.

 

It seems that race officials were concerned about riders jumping the start so, they decided to have all the riders line up on the starting gate with their bikes in neutral and their left hands on top of their helmets. When the gate dropped, Robert had a 50 foot holeshot with his left hand still on his helmet :lol: He had simply stomped on the CZ's gear shift lever and gave it the gas :D

 

Then there was the story about Robert having such a big lead at a Trans-AMA race that, he pulled over to take a swig of a spectator's beer :lol: I heard an embellishment of this story from a fan at trackside at Sears Point. In his "version", Robert takes the offered beer can and takes off down the track. Upon reaching a jump, he performs a full cross up, takes one final swig of beer (while still in mid-flight, mind you) then, slam dunks the can to the ground :lol:

All the Italian makers dropped out of GP racing after '58, didn't they? Of course you didn't hear much about it... ;)

Obviously, never fully developed: did you notice the lack of torque forcing Ago to slip the clutch extensively just to get underway? Kept having to clutch in & rev more to keep from bogging. Geared tall fo' sho'...

 

Speaking objectively, the Guzzi V8 sounds much better tho', doesn't it? :luigi::thumbsup:
