Newbie - Urgent Help Req'd

Hi,

New to the forum. Have just got a 2003 V11 Sport, 3,500 miles, one previous owner. Bike has had repaint of engine and gearbox done, and gearbox recall.

I have only done 110 miles on the bike, returning home after a ride out today, engine lost power and started rattling and now has what I would describe as a serious sounding, heavy knocking from the engine.

All this happened a mile and half from home, after an uneventful, enjoyable sixty mile trip. The bike is still under warranty until September.

Does anybody know if this is a one off or has it happened before, if so is it as terminal as it sounds?

Cheers,

Martin

heavy engine knock sounds like bearings...big end or mains. Or top end...would be lighter rattle. Is knock at engine speed? How's the oil level? Sure it's from engine - not gbox, clutch or drive?

If it's under warranty I suggest you go straight to the dealer. what you describe is not a regular occurence.

Sounds like something gone wrong in engine/box rebuild. I didn't think 2003 models had any gbox recall???

Sorry to hear of the problem.

Yah, almost sounds like a clutch coming apart.

You probably want to truck it to the dealer.

Does the warranty include towing or road side?

What happened to the other guy a while back that the nut or something came off the cam? Something like that, it was pretty catastrophic. I would have it towed to the dealer, dont even restart it. Maybe someone else with a better memory of this can find the thread & post it here,

Hi,

I'm new to the forum as well. I thought I'd mention that I had a simularly scary encounter with my 2003 California EV that I recently traded in for a new 2004 v11 Sport Ballabio. Check to see if the noise is coming from the front of the engine. The nut at the end of the crankshaft that holds the alternator armature in place had come loose on my California. I couldn't believe the amount of noise it made. Just being loose allowed the spacer for rattle and was amplified by the alternator cover. I was VERY relieved to find that was causing the noise. Hopefully you will be as lucky as I was...

Hi tdurik,

Thanks for the input, a specialist dealer suggested the alternator nut, and I already tried it - it's tight. Also lifted the valve covers and everything looked ok in there.

I've trailered it to the dealer today, so I'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks for all the input.

Hi all,

Spoke with the dealer today and the latest news is that they have strpped the engine and it needs a new crank, con rods and bearings. Apparently, the bearings have spun in the rods, but only the bottom end ahs been affected, bores, valve gear etc is all ok.

I'm hoping to get over and look at the engine in the next few days.

Thanks for all the feed back.

ouch. Glad it's under warranty.

I wonder what happened with it? Assuming you kept the oil up, then perhaps a galleyway was clogged from the factory?

Folklore is that on Guzzi, the mains are trashed first, so I would have them look VERY carefully at the front AND rear main bearings.

Sure sounds like loss of oil to the crank. Did you notice the oil light come on at all?

Thinking I might fit an oil pressure gauge to mine.....

Hi all,

Well, I've been into see the engine stripped at the dealers today, and basically the fault is due to human error whan the engine was built.

The big end bearing has spun in the con rod of the left hand cylinder. The other big end and main bearing journals are all ok. What the technician found was that the big end cap had been put on the con rod the wrong way round.

This was an engine failure waiting to happen it seems. The man from Moto Guzzi has been in to see it and taken photo's and is submitting the warranty claim to the factory along with his report. I may know more next week.

Whilst not good news, I am at least re-assured that this wasn't the fault of some inherent weakness in the engine or manufacture, but down to human error on the part of the engine builder, Luigi.

Interesting. The bottom end on the Guzzi is fantastically strong, but I suppose not immune to f**k ups.

Well, while you have the parts out, you might think about balancing the crank, or doing any internal mods that you have been considering.

bmk,

well coulda been worse! Was engine opened before? When repainted?

Do you know anything about the "gearbox recall" you mention? What was the problem? I don't think there was any recall on 03 boxes. It's pos your bike had a specific problem sorted under warranty? Was engine stripped then?
