  1. Remo, thanks so much for posting the photos.  Both of my wifes grandparents immigrated from Italy to America.  Mothers side of the family from Naples and fathers side from Palermo.  We have discussed the possibility of a vacation to Italy many times. Unfortunately my Italian is limited to "pizza, pasta, vino".  Hopefully next year-2018 will be the year.

  2. Jaap- When I bought my first V-11 Sport about the only thing I knew about Moto Guzzi was they looked cool, sounded great and are'nt many around.  Now, thanks to this Forum I have done my own tune ups and maintenance  and feel confident that I can handle almost any problem issues.  You probably dont hear it enough from us but THANK YOU FOR THIS FORUM.  And also to everyone that shares their knowledge and experience with these bikes!

  3. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!  Scud- where did you source the front fender? That looks awesome on the bike.  One of the major and only disappointments I have with my bike is the black PLASTIC FRONT FENDER  Guzzi saw fit to install on the LM.

  4. You can sure tell its winter when the conversation turns to oils and tires!  Interestingly over on one of the British bike forums the guys are having the same conversation.  One in particular is discussing oil flow rate and its ability to absorb/dissipate heat.

Back when I was into racing cars we would remove the thermostat. In its place we would install a "restrictor plate" which had a smaller opening thus slowing down the coolant flow rate and allow it to absorb/transfer more of the engine heat before traveling thru the radiator.  We always tried to maintain an engine temperature of 190F.  Nowadays my truck runs a constant 200-210F!

  5. Voycie- Welcome to the pack.  Nice looking bike, do you mind telling us the history behind it, previous owner(s), mileage, etc.  And I noticed the top triple clamp has been drilled for high bars.  Was this a naked sport at one time that someone converted clip-ons and LeMans fairing?

  6. Congrats docc- I was wondering who was going to be the first to perk up when they heard the compression ratio bump just by changing head gaskets.

Gelos- Just trying to confirm that there is enough clearance between the valves and pistons if we use the Breva head gaskets.  No other modifications necessary?

    Thanks for the info

  7. By any chance did you do a compression check before you decided to tear the engine down.  If you had low compression on that one cylinder it could have been caused by worn or poorly seated valve leaking hot exhaust gas into the exhaust port past the valve stem and valve cover area.  And taking a second look at the photo of the piston I see some discoloration on the piston near the wrist pin.  Im thinking that although the rings may have been leaking, it looks like the valve seat and guide was leaking much worse.

Im sure the guys that routinely tear these engines down will be able to provide a better analysis.

  8. 10 gallon fuel tank?!  Oh good lord my bladder would explode before I ran out of fuel !!!!!  Those KLR's are amazing bikes and have been used for some incredible adventures.  Although a little heavy for the TAT, they sure seem like the go to bike for the Al-Can Hwy.

Fairly inexpensive, reliable for the most part, and a good dealer network if needed.  Just checked Mountain Motor Sports up in Georgia the other day.  They have a close out on 2016's for $4,899.00 plus tax, shipping, etc.  And that includes the warranty.  HHHmmmmm, what can I sell to make room for another bike?

  9. NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE PROPER PLACE TO POST BUT-

Bill Hagan posted over on the Wild Guzzi Forum that Wayne and Vicky Orwig were seriously injured in a car/motorcycle crash and both seriously injured. Both are hospitalized in Gainesville, Ga., with Vicky being the most seriously injured.  For those who attended this past Southern Spine Raid, Wayne provided assistance during the evening "tune-up sessions"  and led one of the group rides .

Hopefully Bill will be able to chime in with an update and more information as it becomes available.

  10. Jester- thanks for the link.  I have been increasingly attracted to the ADV Rider Forum as they have an individual thread for each  of the different makes and models. Looking for a bike to ride on the dirt and fire roads near our cabin up in Georgia, and also the possibility of doing the TAT, I came  really close to buying a 2014 KLR650 with 475 miles.  Then doing a bit more research I discovered that Kawasaki may or may not have done the "do-hickie" conversion for the counter balance chain tensioner and since I was buying the bike used, they may or may not cover any repair under warranty.

As I understand it, Kawasaki finally addressed the problem in 2015 and the 2016 years are trouble free.  Hopefully I will be able to find a leftover 2016 in the spring time.

Scud- Yea the dealer support issue is the main reason I have been focusing on the the KLR/DR.  Do you carry a SPOT or EPIRB tracking device when you ride remote tracks in the mountains or desert?

  11. What kind of range do you get with the Husky?  The fuel tank looks rather small compared to the KLR650's and some of the BMW's.  I only ask because I am intrigued with the thought of attempting the Trans America Trail before I get to old and have been comparing the various bikes.  The KLR and Dr650 with the aftermarket tank seem to be the bikes of choice.

  12. I have had one, the red lift table, for going on six years now.  Bought it originally while I was restoring my 1975 Triumph T160 but have used it for the V-11, the Aprilia and also the 750 pound Suzuki M90.  You can spend alot more money for one but for what we use them and at that price you cant beat them.  I hate crawling around on the floor while working on the bikes!
