I repainted the tach needle with some orange acrylic paint and sealed the tach back up using a clamp to hold it down and lightly tapping all around the bezel with the rounded side of a ball peen hammer.  Went to reinstall it on the bike only to notice I put the face plate on upside down...  So I opened it back up again, rearranged the face plate to the correct way and sealed up it a second time...

I replaced all of the relays for preventative maintenance.  I'm not sure how to check the proper function of the voltage regulator, but I did confirm that the 30amp fuse looks good with no signs of overheating and that I am getting the expected signals through the tach wires.  At this point I am officially giving up on getting the tach working and will continue with my original plan of ordering Speedhut replacements.

On the positive side, I played with the routing of the speedometer cable and noticed a significant reduction in the amount of needle wobble.  Its still not exactly stable, but definitely allows me to make a better estimate of how fast I am going!

Voltage shouldn't exceed ~14.5 at any rpm. You can test at the battery terminal with the bike running. Idle voltage will be 12.9+ rev the bike. If you see 15+ as the revs climb , shut er down and don't run it until regulator is replaced. Worth confirming regardless which route you go with replacement instruments

  2. Check voltage regulator, main fuse and relays. Also check all your grounds. My tach died by the same method, wires detached from posts with some burning around the solder joints. I don't have the hands of a surgeon and my resoldering attempts were unsuccessful.

A bad ground likely fried my Voltage Regulator. I was returning from a long ride when the tach died, when I got home and pulled the seat I had 18 volts across the battery terminals and a melted 30A fuse! Fortunately I didn't incur any other electrical damage and my ecu survived.

Grounding issues are now fixed, voltage in check and I'm getting the 'right' frequency off the tach wire but haven't put a replacement tach in to confirm.

    Good luck!

This is a good question. The Speedhut I installed has a setting to interpret the incoming signal.

Not sure what you mean by "1:1" . . .

[edit: After seeing that @PJPR01 just posted that he found a rare V11 part at TLM/Nijmegen, I found this:

    https://tlm.nl/moto-guzzi-triumph/us-02767200-used-toerenteller-cal-ev02-v11-10-quota

Says "used", but that needle looks mighty orange (as it should coming from The Netherlands! ):nl:  . . .

@docc I've come across that one at TLM both on ebay and thru their site directly, however haven't been successful purchasing. I presume this to mean that the item is sold and the webmaster simply hasn't fulfilled his duties :(.

I must thank you for your efforts, however!

I suppose that my battle with the early Sport instruments led me to translate "Veglia" = "fragile" . . .

As long as your #1/#2 relays check out, let's count on a replacement Veglia tach for your beautiful Sport. :luigi:

(I tried the usual ten page ebay search and didn't find one . . .)

Thanks, I've pondered aftermarket in the interim as I appreciate that the Veglia instruments are notoriously failure prone and consequently quite rare. Presumably any 1:1 electric tach fits the bill no?

  5. Hi Folks,

I'm in search of a working Veglia tach for my 2000 v11 sport. Mine was a casualty of some grounding issues and a faulty voltage regulator, all now solved but the tach never recovered.

I'll happily pay a fair price + shipping to Canada.

    Thanks,

    Sam

I checked my Greenie just while ago .  At pin 3 (yellow/black stripe) I got 50hz at idle . At 3k I measured around 150hz.

HTH . Sorry for the delay .

Thank you! Did you happen to test DC voltage?

  7. Gentlemen,

Thank you for your responses.  I have good power on the red/black and well grounded.

What specific values should I be looking for on the yellow/black.

    DC v:

    Hz:

I'm trying to verify if I have harness/sensor/ecu damage after the voltage spike.

Yellow/black signal wire returns 34hz, climbs with revs (good)

But I'm only getting ~5.5v DC on the signal wire with the motor running.

    Normal?

  8. So. My cursory inspection of the charging system seems to have been a little too cursory. A melted 15a fuse led me to check again. Voltage surging beyond 15 volts with revs. Id been intermittently burning out dash lights. Should have known better. Yup time for a voltage regulator.

Fuse and regulator replaced. Stator leads good. All accessible connections cleaned and checked.

I've reassembled the tach but still no signs of life.

On the tach wiring I have 12+v on the red/black wire (power)

On the yellow/black (signal). I get ~34hz at idle, and the frequency increases with revs. However I am only reading ~10.9v with key on/engine off. ~5.5v DC with engine running.

I know there is a method of testing the wire for AC voltage from which similar inferences can be drawn as checking the frequency.

Is it normal to be reporting such voltages on the tach signal wire or have I got a bad sensor or short to ground that I need to be chasing down?

Probably going to go the speedhut route and dispense with the troublesome veglias.

My thanks for your collective wisdom.

  9. So,

I've got the tach apart, electing to do things the hard way as is my custom. Rather than hack the case I painstakingly uncrimped the chrome bezel, cracking the glass in the process (typical). No matter, I'm in the local glass shop a few times a month anyway.

What I discovered was that one of the ultra-fine copper wires has broken at the solder joint. Assuming this is the culprit, as I suspect it is, I should be up and running again shortly.

<edit> Oh, and my Greenie tach shows ~400 rpm with the engine not running.  It seems to be accurate, otherwise.

I hadn't noticed prior to the failure if the tach ever read 0, but in my disassembly, decided that it couldn't conceivably have done so, a simple case of the needle being stuck in the shaft a few degrees too high, I'll fix that too since I'm in here. Thanks for the peace of mind.

Assuming all goes swimmingly I'll post a write up with pics and add it to the pile. The numerous threads on the issue already have been most useful.

    Cheers

  10. Another round with this dead horse then....grab your beatin' sticks.

My (Veglia) tach quit on me coming back from a recent camping trip ( 00' Greenie)

With the bike shut off the tach reads ~300rpm, not 0. With the bike running the needle will limply flap around below ~1500 rpm but I assume this is only vibration moving the needle. This leads me to believe it is a mechanical failure inside the instrument housing.

A cursory check of my charging system doesn't indicate anything untoward. The bike has siemens relays, but i've not experienced any issue with lighting, horn etc that one might expect from a faulty relay. (Tach, indicators, lights all controlled by 2nd relay from front no?). I've swapped a few relays around and verified no funny business or change in brightness of the lighting, response of the indicators etc.

I've got the tach out of the dash and on the bench, is there anything I'm missing or should consider before I start opening the tach?

    My profuse thanks in advance.

  11. Hey All,

I've just picked up a 2000 V11 Sport with Magni fairing after lusting after one for years. I've been riding for 13 years, starting on a Honda CM400. I've had a VFR, KTM 640 Adv, Versys and Buell XB. The V11 joins the current stable of a 2014 Ducati Hyperstrada and 2022 Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 (My girlfriend's).

Caught the Guzzi bug from my dad who's had an Eldorado, California, Convert, 750s, Breva, Quota, Nuovo Falcone at various times.

Looking forward to meeting you all and plumbing the depths of knowledge and information archived in these forums.

If you're in Eastern Ontario or West Quebec hit me up for a ride or a beer sometime, but never both together.

    Cheers,
