    i have a waxed cotton barbour that i wear here in sunny new york city, purely for fashion(!) if i ever got the time maybe i'd sew some CE armor pockets in it (tartan, of course), but even so, i'd probably never wear it out riding... one false move by a cab driver and i'll have that waxed cotton stink mixed in with my blood! ya know, it just occured to me that a barbour jacket says "hey, here's a guy who has a bit of extra money to spend on an overpriced piece of antiquated technology that usually performs somewhere between ok and moderately well when you need it to, but sometimes not at all. even though you can get a better performing model for much cheaper, i find myself oddly attracted to it". not unlike a particular marque of motor-sicle, eh?
  3. i am the guy who bought his fairing. he (david) had machined a pair c-shaped shims that slip over the fork tubes for an '01 V11 Sport. these shims bring the diameter of the lower portion of the fork tube up to the same diameter as that of the upper portion where the clip-ons are normally mounted. after loosening the bolts, i slid the stock clip-ons down the fork tube and over the shims, tightened, and voila. the clip-ons are now too low to use the 3 positioning-holes in the triple clamp, so you have to do a bit of trial & error as described to get the proper position. i also ended up replacing the brass bolts that secure the clip-ons with 12.9 steel after over torquing one of them, due to a combination of a crappy torque-wrench and operator error. when i get the chance, i will get out the micrometer and grab the measurements of these shims for the greater good. here is the best picture i have, where you can see a portion of the shim below the clip-on. i ended up re-positioning it such that the shim was not visible so this is a lucky shot. note, i also ditched the mirrors that come with the magni in favor of a pair of CRG hindsight LS's.

  5. hey guys, thanks for the kind remarks. and good hearing from a bk native! the seat is indeed a shaggadelic suede corbin number, i scored it off ebay last year. it is quite comfortable, but unfortunately reserved for sunny days only. i really love the retro look of the magni, but it requires the bars to be verrry low. here's my flickr set for more guzzi-porn.

OK, here are a few "before" pics i snapped yesterday morning after slapping the wheels back on. the conti road attacks are quite nice. i was on a set of pilot roads, which were fine, but i figured since i was changing them i might as well try something else. and here it is last night around 10pm before i took the airbox off. (note the awesome laverda in the background, not mine ) i spent way too long installing the H&B bags yesterday so tonight i will be changing the clutch and brake cables for the MPH bar-riser kit, slapping it all back together, and installing the mount for my new garmin zumo 550. i've never bled a hydraulic system before so this will be a hoot. i have a friend with some experience and a crappy plastic pump-kit. and the google. cheers

Ray thanks for the tip on the vintage races, i couldnt find anything about this year's dates on The Google so i may just call them up - i forgot that britcycle is based in nova scotia(!) i was at DucatiNY today trying to order the Rev'It Off Track jacket & Dakar pants and unfortunately Rev'It USA is sold out in my size until September it got me thinking i should just save the $700+ and bring a fleece and some thermals to wear under my summer jacket/pants and their liners.
  9. my friend erik and i plan to ride from Brooklyn to north-eastern Nova Scotia (via the ferry from Maine) and back Aug 10-18. i figured i'd start this topic now and invite any suggestions / advice and post a few pics of both my bike-prep and the ride. I'll be on my '01 V11 Sport, and my friend is leaving his Ducati ST4S in the UK and riding a new-to-him KTM 950 Adventure. hmm, finally seeing that in print invokes visions of myself on the tarmac and him blasting up a train track running parallel to the roadway. My to-do list for the v11 as it stands now is 1. mount a fresh pair of Conti Road Attacks and scrub 'em in 2. swap out the Magni fairing for a bikini allowing for.... 3. install MPH bar-riser kit ( & bleed clutch and brakes ) 4. install H&B bag-mounts and bags 5. finally properly set my rear-shock sag i have managed to procure all of the parts necessary for these projects so now it is just a matter of time. i envision only a few cross-posts over the next week as i strip the brake-disc bolts and bugger something up while getting distracted with the cush drive my bike is right at a meager 4k miles, and recently i have - changed engine, gear, and rear-drive oil (Castrol SynTec 10/40, Uni filter, Red Line Shockproof Heavy) - set valves to euro-spec and re-torqued the heads - replaced fork springs for Wilbers and fork oil with a Red Line Suspension Fluid 7.5 wt mix the list of spares to bring for roadside repair so far just includes: - tyre patch kit - an extra GEI relay - spare shift return spring here is a map of our approximate nightly stops on the trip, there's a friend's wedding in upstate ny to attend on aug 11 and then we'll really be underway my longest trip on the guzzi to-date has been a 600+ mile weekend so this will be a real test of my endurance. cheers and thanks in advance for the patience/bandwidth.

  14. it seems i have a similar problem. although now i need a replacement 90-deg adapter. i smashed mine by not taking off the stock angle adapter first and then getting a little aggressive when checking clearance in the garage (OOPS!). anyone know where i can score one? i have emails into Magni and a few of the Guzzi shops here in the US (it's monday) so we'll see what happens. and i guess i might check the local Ducati shop tomorrow. anyone have any other ideas?
  15. i just did my forks last night and swapped out the stock springs for a set of Wilbers with a 100mm air-gap above a 50/50 mix of redline 5wt and redline 10wt suspension fluid. this how-to was a great help, thank you. since i was at 3500 miles i chose to take the easy route and pass on the full-rebuild (as suggested) and i did a lot of the work with the forks in the triple clamps. i did waste an hour trying to figure out how in the hell to compress the springs far enough to get the blue jam nuts back on and then realized all you need to do is lift the threaded bit (cartridge) in the fork tube. thanks again this forum is awesome

  17. thanks for all of the helpful advice everyone. i havent attacked the stuck bolt yet, i've been spending my time trying to track down a replacement. this afternoon i skipped out of work early and visited victor machinery in beautiful Bushwick Brooklyn and we discovered that this bolt is in the obscure thread size of M10 x 1.25 and measures 40mm with 30mm under the head, 27mm of which is thread. they didnt have it and couldnt get it from their manufacturer and a quick call to mcmaster-carr hit a similar dead end. google found a promising source at coburn-meyers fasteners here but i havent been able to get in touch with them yet. i might also stop by Ducati/TriumphNY tomorrow and see if tracking it down as a brembo or marzocchi part helps. anyways i'll post some celebratory pictures of the darned stuck-bolt when i get it out, maybe i can melt it down into some ugly art or something. EDIT: ok, i've found it here
  18. okay thanks for the advice. rounded out hex flats is exactly the problem here. all four of my caliper bolts were tighter 'n heck and this one just doesnt want to budge. i suppose i'll keep calling around for a replacement bolt. and hey, good guess as to my brand of allen wrenches cheers, daniel
  19. one of my darn brake caliper bolts is stripped. second weekend in a row, last weekend i stripped one of those silly cap bolts that hides the head nut. what is with these soft fasteners? anyways i am currently on a beer break from the caliper project and was wondering a) do you think the old dremmel a slot and apply a screwdriver approach will work or b ) uh... easy-out? and c) home depot didnt have any replacements, are these damned 8.05mm socket cap bolts a guzzi part? i called mph but being the holiday weekend, no dice. well for your viewing pleasure is a cell-phone snapshot of it after i stripped it to heck stomping on a breaker bar with an 8mm socket.
  20. how 'bout this one. i have a veglia tach replaced under warranty, it had been ordered by the PO when tach #1 died. since day 1, when tach #2 is wired up, it indicates RPM's flawlessly, fogs up only occasionally, and causes the turn-signal fuse to blow, religiously. could this also be a ground problem? or something upstream that fried tach #1? a few months ago i did a good amount of poking around with the multi-meter and head-scratching over carl's wiring diagram, but i honestly havent tried to tackle it since old man winter showed up.

  22. i finally installed my sloppage sheet yesterday, then did some drag racing up and down a freshly paved but deserted riverfront road here in brooklyn. i'm glad to report that the oil-light no longer comes on under bat-out-of-hell acceleration. thanks again pete, and thanks greg for the gaskets and install-guide.

  24. took a few snaps of the corner i rent here in brooklyn, ny. it's in a motorcycle-only garage in my neighborhood, and it aint cheap! but there is running water and plenty of other amenities; lifts, compressors, grinders, etc and a nice community of people w/ various bikes (vintage brits and hondas, cbrr/r6/gsxr-types, duc/triumph/bmw, harleys). an 850T and i are the only guzzis.

    let's talk helmet

    i have the Nolan N100E as well. aside from wind noise, and associated neck pain after several hours in the saddle, it's a great helmet for around town. my only complaint is that it's starting to smell bad.
