Hello from newbie,

Sorry to bug you with this but I've been having a problem ever since I checked this website (just little more than a week ago). So here's what happens:

I'm on a Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R218), and my browser is Safari 2.0.4 (419.3)--info copied and pasted from what the computer says, 'cause I have no idea what that means. This has been happening all the time: whenever I go to the V11LeMans website--these days quite often, about every few clicks (maybe an average of 5) and the browser crashes. This is the only website with this problem. I'm surfing a lot of websites and all except for this one are okay.

I've tried to deblock the pop-up window option, and even reset Safari just in case. Same thing. I don't have Mozilla or Firefox but will ask our computer guy to install them for me. Guess I don't have Netscape either.

Oh, and I don't know anything about computers, so if you have any ideas, please explain as if you're talking to somebody from the last century (or a blonde :D ).

TIA and best regards, :)

The FireFox is a good idea.

See if you can install it yourself following these instructions

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox

It is a drag and drop installation, so it is pretty easy.

Just follow the steps.

Or you can follow my version of the instructions

Download it by clicking on this link

firefox2.0.0.7 for OS X

Your file should begin downloading automatically in a few seconds.

Depending on your internet speed, it may take many minutes to download

When done downloading, a license agreement window will pop up. Accept the terms in the license agreement.

A window should pop open with the Firefox application inside. Do NOT run the Firefox from that window.

Quit Safari, any other applications, and any windows that block the view of the window with the firefox inside.

Double click on the hard drive on your desktop,( probably named Macintosh HD.)

Then drag the Firefox from the first window to the Applications folder inside the Macintosh HD window.

It may prompt you for the username and password of a computer admin. If you don't know it, I can't help you :(

If there is already a Firefox there, it will error.

Close the first window and then double click on the Firefox icon in the Applications folder.

It should launch and prompt you if you want Firefox to be the default application.

I'd recommend it not being the default application, at least until you talk to your regular Mac expert.

To keep the Firefox in the Dock, click and hold on the icon in the dock, keep holding the mouse button down and move to the Keep in Dock option and then release the mouse.

That is the best I can do without pictures.

Good Luck!

Hi tm,

I have the same setup on my mac, but mine doesn't crash. The only thing I've consistently found on the V11Lemans site that DOES crash safari is when beisel posts something. And I'm not sure why- it may be the avatar that he uses (his picture) or maybe something in his signature file. :huh2:

The only thing I can think of offhand for you to do is clear out your cache and cookies.

1st, under the History menu, click on 'clear history'. Then under the Safari menu (next to the apple), click on Preferences, then Security. Click the button that says "Show Cookies". Click on "Remove All", then "Done".

FWIW, I have my security settings to Enable plug-ins, enable Java, enable Javascript, and block pop-up windows. Accept cookies from sites I navigate to.

Leave the pop-up blocker on. That's not the problem, I'll wager.

Don't install Firefox and Netscape and Mozilla. Just install Firefox. It's a fine web browser and has less issues with websites than Safari does. That is to say it is very compatible. You might just end up using it instead. You can add some really cool plug-ins or add-ons to Firefox to add functionality (like download all the pictures on a website with one click)

You can also have your computer guys enable the "debug mode" of Safari; it might help in diagnosing the problem if it persists.

Good luck.

Thanks to dlaing and jrt. I posted here since at our admin's (jaap) suggestion, to whom I first asked the question--he didn't know macs.

I did reset Safari the other day (which means cache and cookies cleared if I'm not mistaken), but the crash bs continued. So I'll take your advice and install Firefox--and ask our computer guy for the Safari debug mode). I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

Try Camino. It's free from mozilla.

Thanks v50man, I missed this. What's Camino (sounds like a PC--as in politically correct version of

something like "Path" :D ).

I installed Firefox from your link. It all went very fast, about a minute or so, then the Agree thing came up as usual, then the Norton virus program (which I have installed) started checking the downloaded stuff. I eventually ended up with a Firefox icon on my desktop. I tried to drag it in the Application folder, where it shows up as an alias icon (with one of those curved black arrows  ). I also tried to drag it in the dock, but nada. WTF... And it also shows up in the finder as if it was one of those discs/connections for which you can press an arrow point and they get either ejected or terminated. I haven't done anything yet. Crap. It's always like this... Computers were not designed not for analog human beings, but for digital ones.

You need Camino, it is the Mac version of Mozilla's Firefox. Your computer cannot run Firefox, it is for Windows based computers. Drag the Firefox icon into the Trash, and download Camino at www.caminobrowser.org. Good luck!

No, no- you can run firefox on a mac. I have it on mine. I promise.

Turn off any anti-virus software when you try to install new software. Ask your computer guy if there are any alternatives to Norton. I haven't run Norton in a couple years on my mac, but I have it at work on my PC...I'm very biased here... but it historically would hog processor power and slow down the computer.

Anyway- i don't want to get off on a tangent. Tmcafe, double click the icon on your desktop. Hopefully, Firefox will start up and ask if you want to import your old bookmarks. I honestly don't remember if it reads

Safari bookmarks, so I can't help you there. Might as well click 'yes' and hope for the best.

IF it starts up, then hold down the ctrl key and click on the firefox icon in the dock. One of the options will be to 'keep in dock'. Choose that.

Ooops, I guess my instructions were not good enough.

What you need to do is open up the discs/connections thing.

This is a virtual disk that contains the Firefox application.

It should have popped up showing you a window that looks like the one

here on the left.

If you can open up that window and a second window showing the open applications window, drag the Firefox icon from the shown left window to the shown applications window. As an alternative, you can simply drag the Firefox icon in that window to the

Applications icon in the sidebar of any window with a sidebar.

ffinstallee0.png

Notice the window on the left is written in ancient highbroglyphics.

It means take the Firefox, drag it to copy it (plus sign indicates copy), to the Applications Folder.

After the firefox is copied, eject the firefox disk.

Launch the Firefox from the icon that should now be in the Applications Folder.

Thanks mac whizzes! :) Dlaing schematics worked in the end (if not identically, similarly enough to enable me to put Firefox in the appl. folder and dock! It also gave me the option to have all the stuff from Safari (browsing, cookies, and bookmarks) copied to Firefox with just a click. While I don't like the Firefox logo, the design is similar to Safari's, so it's pretty user-friendly. I'll see now if v11lemans does its antics again on Firefox. For now I feel like I'm ready to ride my new Cafe Sport (still needs registration, insurance and at least an oil change).

Whoaaaa! Really complicated, these Macs!

There's a learning curve to everything. You learn it, use it - even love it, then some yo-yo decides to "improve" it. Case in point, Word 7, a very powerful word processor rendered nearly useless by icons instead of menus, easily decreasing productivity by 60%. Then throw it on top of Vista to put real twists into computer use logic. The Macintosh isn't as bad as Windows yet, but it does seem to be devolving somewhat. I guess that just means more learning curve stuff, but dammit, when it works well, leave it alone. Windows/Mac systems/applications programmers - are you listening?

Hi TMCafe,

I just open Safari to check on your issue, but it works!. My favorite browser if Firefox for both PC and MAC.

I am currently using OSX 10.4.11 and Safari 3.04 on a Intel MacBookPro (2.4 gig +2 gig ram).

Forget trouble shooting Safari, install Firefox and Ride on :mg:
