Driveshaft universal joints

Hi all,

 

recently I bought a Sport1100 which needs a bit of work here and there. The driveshaft UJs feel rather sloppy and I suspect too much wear on the pinion shaft bearing or bush (how much is tolerable there?)

I noticed that Guzzi only sell more or less complete driveshafts but surely those UJs are nothing special and could be replaced with sealed-for-life items?

Does any one know the dimensions of the UJs?

I've thought about this a few times as well, and just haven't followed through on getting it over to a driveshaft specialist to take a look. Not sure if it's feesable or not, but I'm guessing someone here has looked into it further.

I've thought about this a few times as well, and just haven't followed through on getting it over to a driveshaft specialist to take a look. Not sure if it's feesable or not, but I'm guessing someone here has looked into it further.

Somebody here did rebuild their U/J's with off the shelf parts, I believe it was RossoAndy ?

I haven't seen him post for a while so you may have to search for the thread, he also did a thread on replacing the bearings in the rear drive box and he may have mentioned the shaft joints there ?

As long as the trunnions are greased regularly they will last pretty much forever, (Providing the shaft isn't run misalligned.) The same can't be said for ones that do not havegrease nipples.

 

Early 1100 Sports didn't have provision for greasing and their shafts do fail whereas the later shafts with nipples are fairly impregnable.From your post it is hard to discern whether you mean there is actual play in the crosses in the caps or if you are simply reffering to sloppiness of the yokes on the splines? Any play in the crosses and caps would indicate that that the couplings are shot. The pinion bearings should have zero end float and therefore no slop. If you have slop your crownwheel and pinion will be toast.

 

If the driveshaft has been incorrectly alligned there is a very good chance that there will be damage to both the splines of the pinion and the gearbox output shaft. Even on bikes where they are correctly aligned it is not uncommon to find busted splines on these shafts, it's one of the reasons when they started the V11 series the new six speed box and bevelbox pinion got the 20 spline shafts rather than the 10 spliners of earlier bikes.

OK...

Took the whole rear drive off yesterday and to my surprise the front yoke (ie the one on the gearbox shaft came off just like that. Not quite like it should be is it?

I also noticed that the rear drive can slide for about 1-2 mm on the axle. There is a distance piece but it doesn't seem wide enough. Feels like a part is missing :huh:

The drawing in the parts manual isnt to clear about what goes where...
