Can the V11 charging system be boosted somehow? I keep reading how concerned everyone is about draw, etc when installing auxilliary lighting.

:lol: ....yeah, but AFAIK, naw... the issue is the alternator output isn't up to a lot of electrical load. Maybe there is a more powerful version out there, but I haven't heard of one.

 

Keep in mind that these bikes were originally meant to be sport(ing) bikes with the original spine framed Sport1100's, and not meant to need anymore electrical output than the basics.

 

The old Tonti bikes had room for a top mounted proper generator, but not the spine frames.

 

Things you can do though is to keep your electrical connections clean and sealed/greased. Further, for those high draw systems like the headlight, horns, etc... you can rewire them directly to the battery with a relay. With the system already taxed, any little bit you can do to improve the efficiency will help.

Converting to an an LED taillight could save about 4 or 5 Watts. ~ $50 with inferior output...but if you are good at circuit board soldering, for about $100 you could wire up enough LEDs to fill the stock lamp and get wide bright light.

Or maybe get an LED taillight from a Japanese bike as some of them work very well.

Converting to an an HID Headlight could save about 20/30 Watts. ~$500 with arguably better output. (Some suggest the higher spectrum light is bad for night vision as it contracts the pupil.(following the same logic, amber lights would be better for night riding))

An LED daytime running headlight might not be a bad idea. They make LED headlights for bicycles, but they might look odd.

Brake lights and turn signals would not be as important as they can run off the battery, unless you are forgetful about turnsignal :doh: or tending to drag the brake foot :blink:

Has anyone noticed the alternator on the 1100 Breva?

Is it more powerful?

It would probably be $2000 retrofit.

to make this historical correct: the loopframes had an alternator on the engine. That frame was even higher then the tontiframe. The alternator is the same on all guzzi's as far as I know. During the years, the regulator has become more sofisticated. With a better output at low revs.

The alternator gives a healty 350 W at 5000 r.p.m/min.

 

So subtract the pump, electronics and the rest is for lighting. But not if you never come aboove 4000rpm.

A popular option on older Goldwings was to bolt on a 80amp GM car alternator. :thumbsup:

 

actually the alternator on a wing was "CAR STYLE" belt driven

FROM THE FACTORY...so it was easier for those owners to

find higher output units and replace or rewind the OE units.

 

fwiw the wings had the alternator mounted between the flat

six (they had the room for a car style alt.)

 

consider that now they come w/ something simular in output

to my K-LT....which has a rated output of 800watts !

LED headlights will be present on some cars this year, so that technology is here. Likewise the taillights, my 2004 Toyota Prius has the brightest LED's you've ever seen at the rear. Blinding. The higher spectrum lights ARE less useful for vision. The French did use amber headlights for a very long time, until just plain driven out of it by world market pressure. Kind of like Macintoshs' and PC's. We know which one is better and which one has more market share. You can certainly retrofit to the Breva style setup. It's called buying a Breva. That entire frame was designed around fitting an alternator in between the cylinders, obviously not something that could be done with the spine frame.

But I have seen pictures of an alternator mounted off axis- usually mounted on a crash bar. So you could still have the spine frame. It would look goofy as hell, though.

.....right, but as mentioned, this will not work with a Spine framed bike. The alternator(and it's drive shaft) in the photo above would be occupying the same space as the frame :P

 

I'm not sure this would even fit a modern Tonti... who knows though :huh2:
