At the Cutting Edge, July 13, 2004

Reviewer: lace1066 (see more about me) from Beckenham, Kent United Kingdom

When the media is preoccupied about the vogue for children's books being read by adults (eg those by JK Rowling and Philip Pulman)along comes this novel which is a briliant example of the opposite genre: a novel written for adults in a punchy, racy style which will appeal to adolescents.

But it is not just the style. The story itself is evocative of real life in the 21st Century when there are so many one parent families - with a difference. Here, the father of 10 year old Nancy has not gone off with another woman but gone off on his Moto Guzzi V11 Lemans touring the country taking photographs of mysterious landmarks - a mystery heightened by the refusal of her mother and teenage brother to offer help when the child seeks it.

You will not want to put the book down as you join Nancy in her quest for the truth. Veronica Lloyd fairly reflects just how "adult" some of of today's children have to be.

And she has created a book which will appear to a wide range of readers' interests: art, family history and the mystery novel.
