Sport 1100 replacement front brake discs

I have a 1996 (injected) sport 1100 with brembo front brake discs that are due for machining as they pulse, however I am likely to "cut to the chase" and replace both with new items. The stock ones I understand are 4.5mm stainless units, but I was thinking of stumping up for a better spec ... thicker, floaters... mainly so they last longer (and rust cooly in the rain) rather than any need to dramatically improve braking performance.

 

Does anyone have experience of this?

 

In particular can you use the thicker (5mm or 5.5mm) discs with the stock calipers? Do the bolt holes line up?

 

Any help appreciated...

Cast iron discs are a real improvement

You can sometimes do a real bargain at ebay

especially when someone is trying to sell his 1995 Yamaha FZR1000 Brembo/Motoquality discs.

Who the hell is nowadays riding a 1995 Yamaha FZR??!

Well those discs fit your Sport!

 

Just watch these measurements:

inner diametre: 64 mm

number of bolts: 6

diametre holes: 8,5 mm

outer diametre: 320 mm

bolt pattern: 80 mm

total height: 10 mm

As Brembo part numbers, to best of my knowledge:

08.DU01.32FD (cast iron)

08.YA00.32 (stainless)

With a 9.5mm disc offset: 08.6703.11

These are all full floating

 

9.5mm disc offset, "fixed" disc

Just a reminder that the brakes can feel grabby or warped and what is needed is to put a drop of light oil on the float pins.

 

I had replaced my fronts with a set of take-offs from an earlier Sport and thought they were ruined/warped, but they had sat so long that the float pins were stuck. A little Break-Free CLP while tapping the rotors all 'round with a mallet and much improved!

Beringer makes nice cast iron rotors which they claim won't rust because of a special coating on them. I also like the Brake Tech Starblade rotors. They are expensive but weigh practically nothing!

Cross referencing with the likes of Metalgear (which is useful in that they they advise all the disc's dimensions) suggests some of the bikes in the long list use a 104mm diameter bolt hole. So the note to watch the measurements is very wise.

 

Any one ever tried EBC rotors? I've found MD614LS & MD614RS for GBP294 (inc. postage), which looks pretty tempting. [And very different to the local quote of AUD820 for EBC!]

The EBC rotors rust. That may or may not bother you.

 

Top-of-the-line Brembo floaters are about $610 US per pair. V11 Sport Brembos cost about $420 per pair. Breva 1100 type rotors cost about $320 per pair but are currently backordered in the US. The shop at which I work sells them, as do many others.

Have also been successful keeping semi-floaters happily semi-floating with an occasional drop of Liquid Wrench on the buttons. Alternately, a mini-shot of Aero Kroil (not Sili Kroil). Lacking either, I've also used WD-40. Just make VERY certain to carefully clean up all excess, and carefully wipe-down the rotors afterward with lacquer thinner, Brakleen, or your favorite no-residue solvent.

Yeah, took me until just recently to find spec on minimum thickness. I laugh at these - "minimum thickness engraved on disc":

Maybe if you recognise yours that will tell you what you need to know.

 

Breva 1100 type rotors ~US$320 per pair? Wow! Looks like I will definitely be importing to avoid local price gouging.

I don't need to go fancy. I've worn my 08489982s down to sub 3mm without warping or complaint (so much for 3.6mm minimum thickness). Though one set of pads, I got from a Ducati dealer, only lasted 8000km. Maybe that helped...?

One of the reasons for the minimum thickness is that a pad worn close to the backing plate could possibly make a bid for freedom between the caliper and disk !! :o (I've seen cars do this)

Its possible to go below the recommended thickness but only if the pads are checked (with our bikes the rear disk is probably the one most likely to be dangerous due to its ability to wear pads at a rapid rate !!)

I would have thought the pad pin, with the additional safety of a pad pin R-clip, pretty much nailed the pad against bidding for freedom?

Meanwhile I've ended up with Brembo 'snowflake' rotors, 08.2003.84, ex Yoyodyne. USD120.75ea. Just a touch different to AUD688ea, for OE, via a MG dealer!
