  1. I'm exploring the possibility of holding a Spine Raid in VA next year the weekend after the 4th of July 2024. I'm still looking at locations but this one is a good possibility:

I've also roughed out a 5 hour ride for Saturday. May possibly add a side route that takes us up to Burkes Garden.

Other possibilities are the Tazewell and Wytheville areas but there doesn't seem to be anything other than hotels for lodging.

    Great.

I ride in that area a bit.  As you know, it's quite fine.

Will check out those loops this evening.

Kathi abandoned me this morning for a trip to Italy, so I'm In the Moto Grappa getting the V7 III ready for my run to the KSR.

I'll be back for two days, then return for my semiannual Mutton Run.  Yee ha; war is heck!

Lodging seems to be scarce in the area unfortunately. May shift a little west to Breaks Interstate Park.

    Nice lodge: https://www.breakspark.com/the-lodge

And a nice 5 hour loop.

The best "Good Idea Fairies" don't only come up with suggestions, they do what Joe has done in Kentucky.  ;)

So, Randy, assuming that your use of "we" was in the royal sense, what's your plan?  :D

    Bill

I'll start looking for the lodging in a nice location.

I have a house in Abingdon so I can preview routes over a few weekends.

Tie these two loops together and you get a 4 hour, 170 mile or so loop that includes the Back of the Dragon.

Thanks Docc, it is also up on ADV rider, I think in the Stelvio thread? Can't remember? But it is useful for those who are after an 8V.

Once their foibles are worked out they are a magnificent motorcycle and the Hi-Cam 1200-8V is very reminiscent of the old Rotax motor used for years in Aprilias in the way it delivers seamless torque from idle to wherever you set the rev limiter, although they run out of breath above 8,250. Mark ran his limiter at 9,000 in 1200 guise and bounced off it the whole time but when we built the 1400 motor he's currently running it was dropped back to 8,250 in respect of the 30 gram heavier pistons. It's a torque monster but we haven't lost a rod yet!

His Griso is currently running a single 60mm throttlebody with a Cali 1400 plenum but still utilises the W5AM controller. That thing will tear your arms clear out of their sockets and stuff them up your arse with mustard on them! It's a beast!

I'm assuming you work up a new map for it as well?

@RandyI used sorbothane pads in the mirrors for mine.  They're still a little jumpy and narrow...

    You're on the 939SS board?

Note: I have no memory of reading or posting here.  I was so sick at the time, I was totally out of it.

Yep, I'm on the 939 board.

I wound up putting bar end mirrors on and absolutely love them. No arms blocking the view and zero vibrations.

  6. She's starting to get sorted out. Plugged the mirror mount holes in the fairing and went to a neat set of bar ends. Like them so much I'm thinking about putting some on the Coppa.

Used the cheapo Amazon wraparound fork mount signals. Double sided mounting tape with 1/2" aluminum angle, just below the headlights.

Baffles in the pipes, didn't make them much quieter but they have a deeper burble.

I've never been a big fan of traction control, I've always thought you should hone skills the old fashion way. I still think that but if you know how to ride well without it it's a pure joy when you put the two together and ride with it. And quickshifters are awesome :P

Aprilia Mana. 850cc SOHC, single throttlebody, 'L' twin, electronically controlled CVT with three automatic ride modes and one 'False Manual' seven speed mode controlled either by a foot lever or buttons n the left switch cluster. It makes low to mid seventies HP and has an absolutely flat torque curve.

Mine, at the time that photo was taken about 12 years ago, had all the factory 'Fruit' on it. The bags, screen, top box etc. we're all expensive Aprilia branded accessories but I was a service agent at the time so I got them.

In keeping with my usual practice I've spent money on suspension and brakes. The original forks were awful but a set of fully adjustables off a Gen2 Tuono, revalved and sprung, fixed up the front and the back wears a fully adjustable Hyperpro. Front brakes are 100mm radial Brembos with HH pads in place of the original 80mm no-names. It stops and handles very well!

They were made from 2008 to 2014, from 2010 onwards you could get the GT model with a very effective frame mounted fairing. I had one in the US and completed a 14,000 mile tour that was enormous fun on it.

A genuine 'Orphan' you can pick them up for next to nothing. They are a superb little motorbike. Very reliable and although there are a couple of big ticket service items, (Belt and valve adjustment.) these have very long intervals. You'll pry mine from my cold dead fingers!

    I want one.
