  1. Anybody ever had the worm gear pickup for the speedo bust? The speedo needle suddenly dropped to zero and I found that the collar of theangled gear had loosened itself so I wound it tight on the roadside, but the speedo stayd dead. Back home I tested it with a drill and yes, it works. So there is only the worm gear pickup left.

The importer in Finland advised not to dismantle it for fear of dropping something inside the gearbox, but according to the parts cataloque pictures there shouldn't be any loose parts like shims or whatnot. In the old five speeder, you had that all important small pebble to worry about, but I couldn't see anything like it in the picture of the six-speed gearbox. The thing I'm mostly afraid is wether the rotor has dropped loose in the gearbox.....

I had the peened "cap" give way on my RM at just about the century mark, resulting in the up gear on the angle falling out somewhere along a long straight back road in Florida. Ordered a replacement angle gear assembly and replaced it...an easy fix. I think it was $80-90USD. No loose bits to fall inside the gearbox that I remember. k

  2. My TDC sensor is leaking oil. It looks like it is seeping out where the rubber block adheres to the metal mounting tab. I'm considering cleaning it up with electical contact cleaner, then placing a small bead of super glue or silicone to get me down the road a little longer...however, knowing that it will only be a short term bandaid vice a repair, I will have to replace when I get the down time. The repair manual describes setting/checking the air gap inside the timing cover...easy enough, but takes some time and sanitary conditions. Has anyone changed their TDC out using without setting the gap, that is, using the original shims? What happened? Heading out for a couple of weeks, so your post will languish until I get back. Appreciate response. k

  3. The early Guzzi's input splines were smaller and tended to weardown with the dual disc arrangement over time (been awhile since I've had one apart, but I believe the "center floater" causes the wear)...the later Guzzis like ours have a larger spline that is supposed to put most of that concern to rest. My old SP (at about 60K miles) had a worn input spline which caused occasional clutchomania, but it was not a showstopper. In fact, despite the latent recommendations I will probably receive, I even replaced my clutch discs once on the worn input spline due to that particular fix being cost prohibitive at the time. The guy who bought it from me never messed with it either to my knowledge although he did install sportier bars and a cafe racer fairing. Not going to get into the idle discussion...but I may bump mine up a little :luigi: . Keep smiling. k

  4. Do you disconnect your battery from the bike's electrical system before putting it on the tender/charger? I have been due to some posts a couple of years ago about there not being any not being any protection for the ECU...but, now I wonder if that is true?

I just put an Odyssey in a couple of weeks ago after five years of use from my previous mailorder AGM (which I left on a tender many times including +6 months sitting out of the bike while I was overseas). k

  5. Okay, invested in a second compression tester (since my other is 600 miles away)...compression is good so no burned valve. Coil wires are good. Put in an Odyssey PC545 battery since I killed the other (I got 5 years from it, so it was time). Reset the TPS again (and it was way rich). Bike is still popping back through the right intake and blacking the plug. I think its the fuel injector on the right cylinder. I'm going to put fresh plugs in it tomorrow and give it one more go on the TPS, but if that doesn't do it, I'm going to replace that injector. k

  6. Okay, I've read most of the nine pages posted here. I know my damper leaks, and I'm certain I have it dialed almost to or at minimum...that due to speed wobble when I first bought the bike used 6 years ago...so, I'm game to try another---is there a good replacement out there? Not a gold plated one, but the one that will do the job reliably for a reasonable period of time (like years)? k

  7. Yup, plugs are good...intake rubbers are good. I'll get a compression tester and do the compression next weekend. I'm out of time the week. I'm also going to get into the fuel system, change the filter, swap injectors and maybe get them checked somewhere. I'm running out of places to look, but it will probably be something simple when I find it. k

  8. Okay...mine is ribbed, not open. TPS is reset, checked thrice. Valves checked. Ignition pickup removed and cleaned. Intake rubbers are good. Motor is still backfiring 3-5K rpms...right cylinder only....with or without the PCIII. This has been progressively getting worse, starting with some occasional popping at 3-3500...now effects alot of the rpm range and makes the bike unridable. Won't idle. Thoughts? k

  9. If mine is unsealed/slotted, I'll take a picture of it. But, I'm not going to get to it for another week...hope it is slotted so I can clean it up. Probably a very good bet that it being mucked up is a part of my problem, since its been outside under a cover for over a year (in the salt air). Good advice from all. Time to get a new digital meter so I can do it right. Keep smiling. k

  10. I've been putting it off, but the ole girl is surging and stuttering with the occasional backfire at 4-5000rpms...time to reset the TPI. Two questions here--1) want to get a fluke meter that will read the very low millivolts for this operation...used my old meter last time and best guessed the needle position, but far from optimum. Pls recommend make/model of meter and where you purchased (USA). 2) Is it worth my effort to procure and install the Harley TPI piece during this tune up? If so, pls pass the US part number. Thank you.

  11. I remember having an issue with an LED kit as well, but it was so long ago I don't remember what I did to fix it. Since you know you have juice going to it, I'd start by making sure the ground point you've chosen is actually a ground vice isolated somehow. Something else you might try is taking the lighting wires directly to the battery +/- to make sure you do not have a bad group of LEDs. Keep smiling. k
