  1. Gathering info and parts to do a clutch replacement on the Scura.I couldn't find a "How To" on several searches on either the engine removal or clutch replacement.I'm hoping the wise "elders" who have owned and worked on multiple Guzzi's for decades and even the young bucks will chime in their advice and experiences on these procedures.Hopefully this will be successful and be deemed worthy as a "How To" article with photos!.

I have a 08 Griso twin plate assembly on order from Reboot.

I have a good selection of standard tools and the shop manual, other than the MG special tools for the clutch ,which I'm trying to locate if anyone has a set, what else could I use?

What gaskets, seals, parts should I replace, grease,or maintenance should I do while I have the engine out?

How to support and pull motor? I'm probably going to hoist it from above with a hoist and strap around spine(tank removed) support motor from underneath with a jack.

How to remove the clutch and re-assemble it.

    Parts needed

    Griso Twin Plate Assembly

    Friction Plates,probably SD-Tecs

    Seals ,Gaskets,etc

    Procedures

    To follow,....

Please add anything you can think of,hopefully this will a great value to others in the future who have to take on this job,...

    Michael

I remember seeing a thread here with a complete teardown and replacement of the clutch system. Someone here will remember where it is and hopefully post the link to it here for you.

  2. I guess I have been the odd man out on the Scura clutch situation. Although I have sold my Scura, I remember this internet frenzy about the clutch.

I loved the stock clutch and aluminum flywheel. It was the best-performing Guzzi clutch that I'd ever used. Pull is so light and take-up is so clean. The motor revs quickly and with spunk. I loved it.

I was never convinced that the clutch problems talked about were as widespread as many people believed. Yeah, some pics from europe of an exploded flywheel an holes in the engine cases are striking. However, I asked a prominent tech guy and dealer if there was ever any problems with the venerated twin-plate clutch. "Not very often" he replied but occasionally something did happen even to those he said.

So, my speculation was that the incidents of single plate failures may be within some typical rate of incidents, much in the same way as with the twin-plate clutch. I just never believed that ALL single plate Guzzi clutches would grenade. I have known of a good number of them that did not.

I dunno. I think if I was having trouble with my single plate Guzzi clutch, Id remove it and look things over. I'd be sure to check the bolts on the flywheel and maybe try to add some washers to the heads if they werent there. If I didn't see anything amiss, I'd bolt it all up and try again.

I've seen quite a few pictures of the Scura flywheels with cracks in them. If Guzzi only made 600 or so Scura's then the problem is much higher than 2% of them. The clutch disc is a wearable item and if I owned a Scura with that flywheel, the next time the disc needed replaced the flywheel would be replaced. The problem with that flywheel is if it does go and you're moving pretty fast when it does its going to be very bad.

  3. Hi Michael, yes, there was a bit of pissing about with RAM unit: kit was supplied without bolt set so I had to dismantle to fit & centre button was wrong size & I replaced with stock Scura piece. Richard100t's sounds a great offer.

    KB :sun:

Keith did you use MG special tools during the operation or fabricate or buy generic ones?

Yup I think it looks great, just want Micha and Pete Roper's opinions of twin vs single plate replacement.

    Pete? :huh2:

I have Pete's Scura, and he had the single plate changed out before he took delivery. He told me that while some people don't seem to have any trouble with them, he didn't want it to blow up when he was out in urine drinking country in the west..

H Ha  Thanks Chuck I believe he said he changed it to a twin-plater in a thread could''t find it,hopefully I can get him to confirm/deny.

I remember reading that thread too and I also remember him going to a twin plate setup. They are thought to be more reliable but other than the Scura flywheel problem I havent heard much other trouble with the single plate setup. The twin plate is more money too, which is another consideration.

  4. I'd like to post the pictures but I think I'll need a moderator so that I dont have to crop them down too small. If one of the moderators will pm me I'll send all the pics of the damages for viewing here.

Richard....... Do this: go to an automotive parts store, ask to look at any two identical U-joins. Take them out of the boxes and stand them up about 2' from each other. You see that the caps are matching at 3-6-9-12 o'clock positions. Your driveshaft HAS to be assembled this way to be "in time". Now the yokes at the ends of the driveshaft HAVE to be in the same position as you would touch both your thumbs and middle fingers together. When you have all of these as thy should be, the driveshaft will be "in time".

Do this as you are sitting at your computer to understand this concept.

You will probably find something is not kosher with your driveline.

I appreciate the advice, BUT I need a whole new driveshaft at the moment because the old one got mangled up with the bits of the broken u joint. Unfortunately there arent as many v11's out there as there are Hondas, so it will just take a little longer to get the used parts that I need. When I do get them I'll definitely keep all of you up to date.

  6. That's hard to take, how many miles on your bike now? I'm in town for a while if you need a hand...

    Hi Tracey,

I have 40k on it now. I appreciate the offer of help, but I kinda need the replacement shaft before the bike will go again. Send me your phone number in a pm, I cleared out my phone and I should have written down my contact numbers first!

  7. I was out for a nice relaxing ride last night when I started to hear this weird ratting sound. I was only doing about 50mph and not hot rodding at all so I thought this is odd, did I run over something? Then it got real bad real fast. I pulled over to the side of the road to find that my front u joint had broken, taking the cover with it and pretty much trashing the front shaft yoke in the process.

If anyone has, or knows where I can get a new shaft please PM me.

I'll post pictures of it later, its hot and I'm still pissed about it. I greased that *^&^%*%* joint every damn year.

  8. Clutch life will depend very much on how it is used but from what I'm hearing the later RAM clutches only come with the Bronze plate and that makes them less of a long term proposition. Having said that 34,000Km out of a plate that has to do what the RAM does in a V11 isn't outrageous.

Personally I preffer the twin plater which is why I've got one in my Scura but most people who ask me I state that is an option and why I preffer it and they'll still go for a RAM single plater :huh2:

    Pete

How is the twin plater working out for you and where did you buy it? Thanks.

    TJ

I'm turning 40k miles on my Rosso Mandello and I have my fingers crossed! I dont ride it very hard though.
  9. I had the K&N filters on mine for years and they were just fine. Then I recently aquired a pair of billet velocity stacks on ebay with the foam type filters. They also work just fine. The nice thing about them for me is you lose 5 pounds or so and you have much more and easier access to service the bike. Wether it makes the bike any faster is almost irrelevant to me.

Oh did I mention they make the bike LOOK faster and way cooler! B)

  10. Since you checked the valves the other two major causes of the popping and misfiring are the tb balance and tps. I'd try balancing the tb's and giving the tps a good look. All the other things mentioned could be causing the problem, BUT the tb balance and tps is a very easy job to do and free so I would go there first. The tb's only have to be off just a little to cause that problem.

  11. I have seen the Diavel and sat on it and it looks much better when its in front of you. I can tell you that I didnt really care for it that much...until I sat on it. Then you really get it, its very comfortable even with a stock seat and the grips and switches are all where you would like them to be and they have this feel about them. Its hard to describe but I did like it. Then you imagine the 160 hp and it weighs about the same as your v11 :race:

  12. The only problem that I recall is a forum member didnt line the marks up right once and it caused problems. I cant recall any u joint failures that werent related to bad alignment. I havent heard of a single one that has just worn out yet.

  13. You're saying this is a picture of a replacement flywheel? I've never heard of a replacement breaking up in the middle like that. Makes me think theres something else wrong thats causing this sort of damage. You arent letting BFG's mechanic work on it are you? :luigi:

  14. You want to get the Ballabio version with the higher bars. If you can find an 04 model those are pretty sweet. That newer sport12 model is a Breva with some very slight body panel changes. Still its a really nice bike, more modern and digital dash. Look at both bikes in real life, not pictures on the net and pic the one that moves you.

  15. Changing out the pinion gear in the v11 is damn near impossible to do. You probably need special tools and some of the plastic bits just get trashed when you try to remove them. Thats a big downside to shaft drive, and the added weight. But its cleaner and allegedly less maintenance.

  16. Bullshit.... So I can hit you & it's your fault ?

Well theres the thing about being right and being "dead" right. When you're on a motorcycle its always on you to do everything you can to not get hit. People do stupid crap, drive distracted and generally dont pay attention to their surroundings. Its always your responsibility to spot these types of drivers and then avoid them at all cost. You all know that when you pass someone thats not driving right that you have to put space between you and them. If they hit you it may be their fault, but you're the one going to the hospital....or worse.

  17. Mine is at 42,000 miles with few problems, never forced to walk at least...

Bought her totaled out at 16,000 miles and repaired her, tough bikes...

Damn Tracey! I better get on the road! Mine only has 39,000 on it. You probably put that many on the beemer in the same time period though :notworthy:

  18. Its really satisfying to see that they couldnt get the bike to start. I can just imagine how mad he or they were about that! Hell my vll is so simple to start without the key that its not even funny. I forget now what I did at some point one of the bolts holding the ignition came out, anyway once you get in there all you have to do is unscrew something and its as easy as turning it by hand without the key. Same deal with the rear seat lock, just unbolt the locking mechanism and you're in.

  19. If anyone actually does a front end conversion using modern spottbike forks and wheel please post the bearing numbers and a few pictures. I've been interested in putting a gsxr, cbr, ninja type setup on mine for awhile, but I didnt wanna be the first guy to try it

  20. Doesnt it usually crack at the place where the frame bolts to the motor in the front? I hate to say it but you might be better off letting it go and just get a different v11.
