  1. Got the starter motor off and opened. To my untrained eye nothing looks wrong. It actually looks nice and clean. Should I start opening it more?
  2. I appreciate all the advice. I am going to pull the starter. I haven't done it before so if there are any special instructions on how to approach that I'd appreciate it. Looked on youtube for a video but haven't seen anything helpful as a DIY on how to remove the starter and where to start with opening it up. I have to travel to Boston for the week so will have to come back to this project when I get back.
  3. So now I have cleaned all the wire ends going in to the battery and put vaseline on these connection points. I am getting 12.58v across the + and - terminal and when I turn the key on it goes to 12.28 and slowly goes down if I keep holding it there. When trying to start the engine it does the same thing as before: loud solednoid click but no engine turnover. Across the + battery terminal and bolt on the engine case (not used by another ground wire) I get 12.58v
  4. with the voltmeter black wire on the starter terminal (under the solenoid terminal) and red wire on the positive terminal of the battery....this gives me 12.68v
  5. TEST A: I hear the solenoid click but engine does not turn over. I get a spark at the positive terminal of the battery. TEST B: 12v lamp turns on. Meter reads it at 12.66v. Same thing as before....Solenoid click is heard but no engine turning over. Spark at positive terminal is seen. The click I am hearing is definitely the solenoid loud click.
  6. Got it back together but it still does not start. I still hear a single click at the starter but doesn't turn the engine. The battery voltage has me really confused. After charging it with a new charger designed for AGM batteries it reads 14.3v across the leads while its charging. 13.3v when fully charged and no charger attached to the leads. Then after trying to start, it reads 12.2v I attached a battery tender wifi device that tells me the status of the battery and it reads anywhere from 80% charged to 100%charged in a matter of minutes. I plan on removing this device at it seems useless. I just put it on yesterday for the first time to see if it gave any meaningful information. This is a less than 6month old battery and has been maintained with a battery tender the whole time I've had it. Which I'm learning now is not the best approach for an AGM battery. 1. Is this battery a problem? Yuasa 12v 13aH (10hr) VRLA YTX15L-BS (M6215L) 2. Can you give instructions on locating and testing the start relay 30? 3. What would you recommend trying next to figure out why it won't start? 4. Can anyone list all the ground contacts that need to be cleaned (where they are usually located and what methods you use to clean a ground contact)? Relays were all recently updated. Ignition is clean and lubed with fresh vaseline. Battery is new but not sure what to make of the voltage readings I'm getting. I have not put vaseline on the battery leads yet so will do that next.
  7. 1. How much Vaseline do you put on? 2. Do I put the Vaseline directly on the contacts from where I just wiped the old grease?
  8. So the ingition switch is out and apart. One thing I did not do is keep track of how the contacts were fitted together. Any trick on how to put it back together other than just best guess based on the couple pics I have from before it came apart? I'm assuming the position of fitting the pieces together matters. I've cleaned the grease off with just a paper towel and cleaned the copper contacts. When I try to fit it together I can here a series of electrical sounding clicking sounds coming from the relays as the copper plates rotate on the silver circles (middle picture). Is this normal or should this worry me?
  9. docc, so just putting it on a battery tender (trickle charger) is not sufficient to maintain the battery? This was a new battery 3 months ago and has been on a battery tender since I bought it. what charger do you use to discharge and then recharge it at 6amps? I will do some reading through one of the other threads dealing with charging and voltage issues. I think I need to go through all the connection points and make sure they are clean. I was hoping I was getting close to a diagnosis but does not look like it yet.
  10. Kiwi_roy thanks for the detailed explanation. So here is what I've found: 1. voltage across main line in to starter and battery negative terminal ....12.55v 2. voltage across transmission and battery positive terminal...12.55v 3. voltage across Trigger wire and battery negative termiinal shows ZERO. 4. Neutral switch was not properly connected so this has been fixed (thanks to Scud, for helping identify this) Can you explain to me the procedure to clean the ignition switch again using the labeled picture below? Is letter 'A' the back that needs to be pried off? Is the white plate the notches I see inside of the part labeled 'B'? Do I have to do anything with letter 'C'? Thank you
  11. This was my first MotoGP and I cannot believe I havent been to this before. Loved it! The sound and vibration of those bikes as they pass the grandstand is just incredible. The Hand built motorcycle show was a great unplanned bonus..
  12. Rox, here you go. sounds pretty cool! not sure if this is the song you were trying to post but i like it.
  13. not guzzi specific but this was really helpful for me to understand where to start.
  14. I started reading my copy of Guzziology today in hopes to get some better direction on how to approach this issue and sadly this giant book has half a page dedicated to starting issues. That seems odd given the amount of people I have run in to with starting issues on their V11. Is there a better manual for the V11 line that gives step by step instructions on how to take things apart as well as general maintenance stuff?
  15. ok I'll try these things out and report back. Thanks for the replies.
  16. Started having my starting problem again and this time I just hear the click click of the starter and nothing after that. This started a while ago and I just haven't had a free moment to work on it. Came across this post and wondering what others think of this solution: http://www.guzzitech.com/forums/threads/modern-no-start-issue-solution.4908/
  17. This is a great video and very informative. He passed away in 2015. RIP. Thought it was worth sharing.
  18. Relays are original. Scud you have link for where to buy the Omrons? which ones do you replace? thanks
  19. Will check and replace if they are original. The first time I had this problem the fuse blew before anything else so after replacing the fuse everything was fine but now it is happening again so seems like a bigger problem. Will check relays and clean the connections and add vaseline. Thanks.
  20. I have the same problem with my 02 Scura. Tried to commute to work this morning and no start. At first the starter was working but then eventually even the starter stopped making any noise. Then eventually I held the start button for more than 4 seconds and the 15A fuse blew. So the fix is to disconnect the battery and clean the terminals and also disconnect the starter and clean those terminals? Will give it a shot.
  21. my daughter is singing this while playing the ukulele for her school talent show so been listening to it a lot lately. love this song!
  22. Technically we are still in a drought on the central coast so water usage is still limited but the hills do look fabulous for now!
