  1. Thanks all.

Great advice on pushing down on the opposite side of the rocker. Someone mentioned that somewhere on this forum many moons ago, and I've done it ever since.

    B)

Helps to have three hands. I also need to find a tool to hold things in place whilst I tighten it up. I always move it just enough to have to do it again... Doh!

  2. I have a couple of Optimate III tenders. Been using them for years without a problem. Part of my lock-up process is to plug in the Optimate and it's reassuring to know there'll be a full charge waiting when I next want a ride.

  3. Saw one in the flesh for the first time today. Don't like the flat fin arrangement on the cylinder's front profile, the finish seems quite poor, and overall it just looked a bit cheap.

They need to do a bigger version too. Something 'substantial'!

  4. Actually there is some damping on the min setting. Not much but noticeable difference when you take it off completely. Steve - you should take yours off and see how it feels when you operate it by hand. Mine felt like there was gravel inside when it started leaking - a fair resistance, certainly not smooth actuation. You have to have it off to feel it.

Hate for the bloody thing to seize up at a most inopportune time...

    cheers

And that's my concern exactly. It must be as dry as a bone in there (hence the notch). I'm just of to the garage to take it off before I forget...

Thanks for your replies everyone. Always appreciated.

  5. Yes, you can run without it. Many here have binned it completely. If your old one is a Bitubo - throw it away. They're garbage and you don't need to spend $ repairing garbage. I ran without mine when it started leaking and had no problems. I put on a Hyperpro damper and it transformed the bike. Not cheap but boy is the bike ever smooth now!

    cheers

Yep. I seem to remember mine leaking when I bought the bike. Thanks for that. I'll bin it and find myself a nice one.

    Cheers.

  6. I sent my Skyline out to NZ last year - used Planetwide (01268-530600). The car arrived safe and sound - no problems. Are you thinking of bringing your bike back to UK in the future? I ask because there are some significant HMRC regulations regarding export and import which you need to be aware of  Email me off-forum if you want more info.

    Regards,

    Robin

Thanks everyone. It's a one-way move (I hope). I'll follow up on your advice.

    All the best.

    Brian

  7. ForwardAir? No personal experience, but about the only one that comes to mind. I believe KLM? or Lufthansa? once offered motorcycle shipping services from the U.S. to Europe as mentioned in some old books on how to see EU by motorcycle, but I don't know if they go to NZ or if they even offer that service anymore in this post 9/11 world... :huh2:

Thanks for that but it'll have to go by sea as air is too costly.

    Cheers though.

  8. Thanks everybody.

I'm going to take it down to the Grandstand area of the TT course as there are lots of teams preparing bikes for next week's practices. I'm going to show my bike at all the other shiny, fast machines and tell it that it's being a slob and should get its arse in gear. Maybe that'll do the trick.

It's had a recent service (which I'd have done myself but for having few tools here at the moment) and at that a dyno run (as the mechanic was keen to sell me a Power Commander) where it showed 80bhp and a lean 'dip' between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm.

I think I'll find and check that sensor you mentioned but mine does have a choke lever rather than any automatic jobbie so is it still the case that I might have to?

Anyway, thanks again chaps. Still love my bike. Just want to know that all's well.

  9. Could be that the temp sensor is faulty so the ecu's "choke" is always on ?

That's interesting actually. It's just had an air filter so it's not that I suppose but I am interested in the idea that the choke might be on. By the way, it returns a regular 38 to 40mpg (UK gallon).

I'll find and check the sensor.

  10. Just lately my 2000 V11 seems to have lost it's pep. Used to surprise me sometimes when I wound it on and it really shifted. Now it's just a bit 'flat' if you know what I mean.

Not very technical or specific sorry. Maybe I've eaten one too many pies?

    Any thoughts?

  11. Thanks again. I'll follow up your links as soon as the wife gets home with my credit card (if there's anything left on it...).

Hope my fix turns out to be the fix and not just a swap that coincided with the bad earth temporarily fixing itself. We'll see...

  12. Before I got too deep into things I thought I'd swap out the relays with the spare one I have. Got to the second one ('Lights' I believe) and all seems back to normal.

These relays are £16 each here in the Isle of Man!!! That's about $30US. Could anybody recommend a source for reliable, good-quality ones so I can keep spares with me?

Thanks for all your help everyone.

  13. Sounds a little like a problem I had with my V11. The main earth is tracable straight from the earth of the battery and runs down ending around the rear centre of the engine. Roughly in line with the rear tyre. Fiddled with that and all appeared ok. But it was a red herring because it was the dreaded relay problem. Chck other threads for that. Hope that this helps

    The Foggster

Thanks for that. I have a spare relay so can chop and change it until I find the problem.

    :-)
