  1. In the past couple of weeks, I have had my new RM up on stands. I changed out the fairing back to stock, took off both front and rear wheels, had the tank off, valve covers and rocker assemplies apart, steering head dissambled, and of course the seat off. Sometime during this melee, I dropped this washer into the pile of parts for the rear spindle assembly. I really DONT remember exactly when it surfaced, but in my mind I believed it to go in there somewhere. I do remember that the part "turned up" and wasnt just disassembled into the pile. Sort of like the spacer in the rear drive. It was on the spindle and fell off, then I put it in the parts pile for the rear. Trouble is with this part, I dont remember when or where it turned up. Anyway, there is nothing I can find in the shop manual or the parts manual that looks like this in the rear. AND IN FACT, I cannot find anywhere that I am happy putting it. There is a possibility that it didnt even come off the bike, because I "tinker" and this could be the dregs of some other forgotten project in the garage. OH, the size is 40mmOD and 25mmID - I think too big for the rear spindle even. Steering Head? Any help will be appreciated. Scott
  2. Thanks for the info, Raz. I'll have a go at that in a day or so (cold as a witch's appendage in a brass undergarment in the garage today). I have the parts manual, the shop manual and this website loaded on my laptop. My buddy, Wick has loaned me his printed copy of the shop manual lying across my kitchen table. And Guzziology is about to break the legs off of my nightstand! I have been STUDYING!
  3. Ok, Raz - thats the kind of stuff I am looking for. I have NOT turned up any of that in my "research" so far. Are there any tricks involved here? When I just had my rear tire off, I left enough spindle in the RH side to hold up the bevel box so I would not have to support it (per manual and this forum), so I didnt study that side of it at all. I do want to get back in there and try for those THREE grease spots. Two of which I have not seen yet! Can you give me a brief outline of what is involved? Scott
  4. Dont know if this is too late for you. I have a complete kit for sale. Fairing, brackets, clip ons, etc. I bought a Rosso Mandello and it was fitted with the Magni and came with all the take off parts. I am going back strictly factory stock and will sell the Magni. It is in the Rosso Mandello color Scott
  5. Thanks Tracey, I did NOT clean them well enough. I was concentrating on getting my new tires mounted and Flush-Bleeding the fluids and checking that there was enough pads left and making sure I had the correct torques for the bolts to go back together and double checking that I didn't get newton meters mixed up with foot pounds. And they are dragging a little bit right now. I am going to pop them off and give them a good cleaning.....um.....pretty soon Scott
  6. So... This is telling me that I need to ride like He...ck. (Like I normally do) Do I also have to slow down and cool off, or can I skip that part?
  7. Yeah, I ran a whole bottle of fluid through those three reservoirs and the stuff that came out the other end was not pretty!! I put new tires and retorqued the front and real spindles and brake mounting bolts and checked the pads and tightened the triple tree head bolt. Motor mounts? Frame bolts? Ihavent even thought about THAT yet. Thanks again I wont mention the pinch bolt whose torque I misread. Took a trip to autozone, an easyout, and a new pinch bolt to finish the front.
  8. I just couldnt resist throwing in my I recently acquired my Rosso Mandello, number 266 I have been lurking and learning here on this forum for a couple of weeks and now am embarking on a restoration and rennovation journey. This form is full of great advise from knowledgeable people. Thanks everyone.
  9. You Folks were so great on my rocker spacer question, I thought I would ask for some advice. I have just got my first Guzzi (Rosso Mandello V11) and I want to go through it from front to back. I want to share my checklist of things to do and get your comments. I bought this bike from an Estate, from folks who dont ride or know anything about bikes. So, I really dont know anything about previous maintenance. The bike has about 7000 miles on it. Did I mention I have never owned a Guzzi before? Replace Air Filter = DONE Replace Fuel Filter = DONE Replace Spark Plugs = DONE Adjust Valves / Torque heads = DONE Change out all Hydraulic Fluids = DONE Change Oil Filter (and do that mod) Install Roper Plate Change Gearbox Oil Change Transmission Oil Lube Drive Shaft Change Front Fork Oil Adjust Front and Rear Suspension That is what I have so far - What am I missing? Thanks - Scott
  10. Well noted, Ratchet. Yes, the first time I posted I was looking at one, stopped what I was doing and made the post, then Sunday came along and I got into the others. All four look identical, I noticed no burrs, but the casing is scored matching the shims as they obviously were rubbing. I'll do some more investigating into this before hopping on and riding. I have to say, though, there was oil all up in there, dripping on my garage floor, even though this bike has not been ridden in, well I dont know how long. I bought it from an estate from people who dont ride. I am actually going to start a new thread asking for renovation advice. This bike is a teeny way into what I hope is a thorough going through and I want to make sure I dont miss anything. Since I have a "ways to go", I'll definitely revisit this issue and perhaps take some kind of action.
  11. Thanks Guys Thanks Ratchet - after getting rid of the "hog" and taking a hiatus from riding for a while, my friend found this bike and it is just what I was looking for, even though I didnt' know I was looking. I like to turn a few wrenches (keeps me out of trouble) and I wanted to buy something whose market value wouldnt plummet like the recent stock market as soon as I got it. I think this bike fits the bill very nicely. (its sexy too) Since you last heard from me I have completed the "top end" work and the bike is back together although not "tested" yet. The curious thing about this situation is that ALL 4 bottom shims are scored exactly the same way on one surface only. If you can imageine a "bulls eye" target - there are concentric score line circles just like the brass shim has been dry spun against the aluminum casing. The casing is scored also, so much that the washer and the case dont want to be seperated. I had to pry all four off. Having said that, the other surface (facing the rocker) and the rest of the shims and rockers look PERFECT, so Ratchet, I didnt want to turn the shim over exposing the bad side to the rocker arm. Since it didnt look like the spacer is going to be moving, I reassembled the head just like it came off, cleaned and coated everything with assembly lube, and set the valves to 6 and 8. They were way tighter than than before. I figure before too much longer, I may pull them back apart and see if there are any changes. All the bolts look stock and they are the same length - doesnt look like they have been messed with. The bike only has 7000 miles on it so how many times could it have been messed with? Thanks again, Scott PS - Pete, just noticed your name on the post - I'll have the Roper plate in hand and that is my project the week after next!
  12. Hi everyone, This is my first post - I hope I dont screw it up!! First of all, I want to thank Jaap and everyone on this forum. I am a new member and a new owner of a Moto Guzzi Rosso Mandello. My aim is to "go through" the bike from stem to stern before summer proper and I have used this Forum extensively for info and have embarked on my quest. The most recent project is valve adjustments. I looked up the pinned thread and decided to re-torque the heads while I was at it. (I dont know where this bike has been) When I pulled apart the rocker arms, I noticed that the "lower" brass shim (the one closest to the ground) has a pretty nasty circular wear pattern where it faces the ?rocker arm support? (the thing that holds the rocker arms and what the rocker arm pins slide through). In other words, from top to bottom Support with hole for rocker Pin Stainless Shim Spring Brass Shim Rocker Arm Brass Shim Other side of the Support The bottom Brass Shim and the "other side of the support" have pretty intense (nasty) circular wear marks on the faces. The other side of the shim looks good and the other shims look good. This pattern is repeated on BOTH rockers on the right side. I have not destructed the left side yet. Is this normal or should I take off the rocker support and have the face machined where the rocker shim sit and replace the shims? Scott
