A quick update, as I have not had time to feed-back on the details of the modification installed on my Le Mans.

The starter motor now cranks immediately upon depressing the start button. Even after long lay away, and cold morning starts like today.

The additional relay with direct feed to the solenoid was the correct modification as suggested by the panel.

Relegating the key switch to circuit enabler as it should has always been.

I’ve not had a problem since installing a Roy Relay.

Anyone else still having starter issues?

I used to watch "Roller Derby" on Sunday mornings, right after the "Gospel Jubilee" and "Laurel & Hardy/Little Rascals".  Classic stuff.  Sometimes interrupted by having to go to church <_<.   Given a choice, I liked the TV.  The afternoon was an AFL/NFL game followed by Walter Cronkite news reel "20th Century".

Some of the best entertainment followed by first class education after a football game.  All of it was grade A vs from what I can get on 300 channels right now.

i love laurel and hardy, a lot of it is still funny today

Further investigation... I just searched Google images and could clearly see a silver Ohlins damper on Scuras, Scura Rs, Cafe Sports, and Coppa Italias. All the Ohlins-equipped bikes with small windscreens had the Ohlins damper - out in plain view. Seems they just saved a few Euros on the fully faired Rosso and Nero Corsas by using Bitubo dampers where they would be hard to see. Very sneaky.

FYI - every Bitubo damper I've removed has had a sticky/spot in it. It's a small sample, but it's 4 out of 4 in my experience, including a low-mileage Greenie that I had for while. If you still have an original Bitubo unit, I think it's worth disconnecting the damper to test it's range of motion and make sure it's not working against you.

Took mine off, not missed it so far…

Any details on the maxton units? They might also be an option for me.

    Ciao

Hi Phil, sorry man unfortunately I can’t be much help there, the previous owner had them fitted quite a few years ago- I’m not even sure about how the adjustments work on them!  I was going to contact Maxton to see whether they have info that’d be useful for me.

Mine could be a bit tired by now, i don’t know, but i’m much lighter that the po so perhaps not an issue?

Have to say, with all the various bits of suspension i’ve tried over the years on the v11, the best return for me has been making sure the tyre pressures were bob on!

  5. if you do buy them, make sure you specify spring weight for your needs.  And also that you’ll receive the correct thread pitch for the caps- the first set i got had a fine pitch and it took me a while to realise what was preventing them fitting on!

I've always wonder what these "pork chops" were and what they did.

Personally, I prefer "pork steaks".  Not quite as dry.  I like to grill them with a full hickory smoke box with chips and pellets.  Sometimes with BBQ rub but otherwise with garlic powder, onion power, salt & pepper.  Juicy but well done.

No, I never drill or put holes  in my pork steaks.....since pork chops can be dry, perhaps?

    damn, now i’m hungry…

That hot positive is notably close to the grounded ECU case.  One must be mindful swinging a spanner there . . . :o

oh gawd yeah- one further point is that my ace h/c fabbo relay is sited 1 inch from the + terminal…

i reckon i’ll live with it a while yet, but them terminal blocks are the way forward for sure.

My monza has 1 wire to the neg, and 2 wires to the pos hahaa!

  8. Just installed a KiwiRoy auxiliary-high-current-fabadoo relay!  Works a dream, thanks Roy.

Starting troubles be gone damn you!

One particularly nice touch was that wee unused bracket sited next to the ecu proved to be a perfect place to attach the relay- it just, only just has enough clearance for the seat base.  Without this, I couldn’t see an alternative handy place- there’s not a deal of room under there.

One particularly irritating point is having 4000 wires hooked up to the battery.

  9. I learned on, and took, my ‘big’ licence on a school’s Fazer 600.  I was riding a cheapo, learner 125 single at the time and even though the 600 had the power i realised i enjoyed riding the single home after lessons more.  It was the sound.  That beat of the engine thudding away gave me a proper grin.

After i got my licence i bought a w650 cos i knew i wouldn’t love a multi and i loved the ace styling.  It was a superb bike and, in retrospect, perfect for a new rider.  At the time there was an excellent forum for the model too.

Eventually i crashed her by opening the throttle too soon on a wet and sharp bend that had tram tracks- awful road condition combo but a good lesson.

So what to buy next?  Always loved the first gen speed triple 900’s, and Aprilia Falcos looked funky….  Came very close to buying a trx850 (still want one) then i was re-reading an old 1999 issue of Ride magazine which had a tiny article on weird Italian bike.  I think it only had 1 photo of the bike- oddball green colour, loved the styling, and it was a twin.

I’m possibly a tad vain when it comes to bikes- styling and noise come first for me, couldn’t give 2 hoots about performance really.

V11’s look damn fine.  And with the right pipings sound perfect- booming at low revs and snarling more and more as you open it up.  Perfect.

I've had my share of problems with the starter motor but I've never had any problems with my micro relays.  That's not to say that the starter contactor may not draw a short-term current that could cause problems, it's just not something I've experienced (yet).  However, I have experienced exactly the same symptoms; lights dim when starter button pressed and you hear the click of the starter contactor but it doesn't crank, or ties to so weakly that you know it's not going to start.  You try again and sometimes it may work, sometimes not.  The cause in my case (and this is the reason I thought I'd add to the wisdom already given) was that the crimped (female) blade that pushes onto the starter motor contactor, was not particularly strong/grippy and had a bit of corrosion in it.  Sorting this out cured the problem.   Effectively insufficient current could be drawn by the contactor coil to pull in the starter contacts strongly enough, these then added extra resistance to the starter motor circuit and the motor cranked weakly or not at all.

Perhaps it was this that caused the actual starter motor contacts to arc and pit, because soon after this I had the same thing again, but this time diagnosed that it was these main contacts that take up to 500A peak and typically interrupt the 120- 150A d.c. cranking current in an inductive circuit.  This in itself is something that you might expect to cause degradation over time.  Anyway, having checked that it wasn't the same thing again and diagnosed that the actual main contacts were adding abnormal contact resistance, I fitted a new starter and this solved the problem.  So my contribution in all this talk of getting better relays (and of course the relay could also cause a weak pull-in of the starter motor contactor relay) is to make sure you have checked these other two causes.

there’s one, maybe two, weak-points in the system

Ah, but you are not telling us why you would go with an RE before you go with a BSA...

I would say the BSA offers more charm, because it has that different engine architecture than the usual twin cylinder that you can find elsewhere, UK or Japan (I am thinking the twin CB's)

I remember sitting in a cafe once when a chap pulled up at the lights, and stalled, his old Gold Star…. Gave me a chance to drink in the beautiful bike but also gave me backache just watching him trying to kick the bugger to life again!
