  1. I finally got a decent ride out of the old girl today!

I was putting a speedbleeder in the clutch piston, and after removing the swingarm I found the bearings were seized solid 😠.  Like totally solid.  The pivot nubs must’ve been rotating independently within the races.

You try and do one little job eh?

So, once more unto the pluckin breach then!  Those bearings are b*stards straight from satan’s worse dreams.  I had forgotten I’d done this job on my last v11; must’ve blanked it for sanity’s sake…

But, new bearings in (lovely fag ones- fags are so nice haha) and blow me down but i think the rear suspension is actually working as it should now.  I kept wondering why I wasn’t feeling confident in the corners before but now we’re back in business!

The reflector/diffuser on my headlight on the Scura has broken off and is rattling around inside the headlight.  It's an octagonal piece of grey plastic, clearly has broken somehow - old age?  Has anyone ever taken their headlight apart to get inside it, or is it a fairly extensive "break the seal and reseal" type of operation.

Alternatives to stock headlight in case anyone has replaced the OEM one with an aftermarket or "new" old stock?

    Many thanks in advance!

Whoaa there fella!  Don’t break it or buy a new unit.  What i did was reach in with a set of tin snips and cut bits off it till it was small enough to drop out.  It’s only very thin metal so cuts very easily.

    Update on shock and forks.

I've never ridden  Penske or the like, the only after market shock I've had is a Hyperpro.  I believe the M Shock that I installed is equal to or better than the mid line Hyperpro that I had on the 1200 Sport.

I had Guzzi Tech revalve and respring forks so motor bike definitely is much more comfortable and handles way better.

If you are looking for reasonable suspension upgrades I can recommend both.

how much is the m shocker?

  4. Areet fellas, got the following bits that should be re-homed really:

    - ITI speedo

    - ITI Tacho

    - Veglia Speedo

    - Veglia Tacho

    - Clock mounts x 3 (One of which is the carbon fibre type)

    - Ballabio fairing inc mount

    - Carbon fibre fairing

    - Tarozzi Clip-ons

    - OE clip-ons (Just the clips, no bars)

    - Sump baffle plate

If anyone’s interested send me a message! 😀

  5. I had pretty crappy fuel economy till i discovered a nasty crack in my mistral crossover.  It was right next to the lambda sensor too.

Actually i’ve only just last week had it repair welded and popped it back on the bike.

I'm not sure what the umarked relays are in that V11 of @p6x, nor the marked front Start Relay. Last I looked the CIT are the best available V11 option when the OMRON G8HE is not available.

The "Roy Relay" that @stewgnu speaks of is the addition of a dedicated start relay in the later V11 wiring harness that, otherwise, overburdens the Ignition Switch and leads to classic Startus Interuptus.

IIRC, p6x also had this additional relay installed. First I have heard it called the "Roy Relay", but our stwegnu is a clever one, yes?

It took me a frankly embarrassingly long time to understand what was going on with the start relay fix.

I refer to it as a royrelay in due deference.

So I took the rear brake off, found that it heated up enough to melt the rubber. :luigi: So I got it cleaned up enough for a rebuild kit. It also left residue on the rear disc and wheel.

those bastards can get damn hot.  i melted the anodising off the disc once.  got to refresh it every year or so i reckon.

Wow. That would be some pretty bad wheel bearings.

Way back when I hopped on the wife's V11 for a ride and it scared me. The rear wheel bearings had failed and there was considerable play in the rear wheel, making it ride like it had rear wheel steering. I said to the wife "what the hell, why didn't you say something". But it had happened slow enough over time that she had just adapted to it and thought it was normal. Amazing what some people can adapt to. Sometimes it takes a fresh take on something.

The effects certainly were, but with the wheel gripped between my shins the play thru the ‘bars was almost imperceptable.  I was rather pleased with the fix- £18 for 2 bearings vs £200 for a new disc!

Any details on the maxton units? They might also be an option for me.

    Ciao

Update:  Now i’ve put fresh wheel bearings in, the suspension feels very good.  There’s no preload or compression adjustment on these maxtons and, weirdly, the extremes of the rebound clicks give either a ‘concrete’ or ‘zebedee’ setting that leaves me confused as to who would need them, and for what purpose… but in the middle there’s a few clicks of nice, compliant suspension.

    Great photo.

Suspension - don't worry about playing with compression and rebound until you do the most important suspension setting - getting the springs right. You can check sag with the help of a friend. There are a few posts on this site about how to do it. You can get the sag right for you and the bike by adjusting the spring pre-load. (if you can't get sag in range with current springs, you would need different rate springs). The first time I did that on my Scura I swore it was a totally different suspension, or the roads had just been re-paved overnight. After that, play with the compression and rebound if you want to fine-tune. The small effort to learn about suspension settings will pay you back every single mile you ride.

Mountains - I was once on a battlefield tour at Gettysburg (which is in the Southern part of Central Pennsylvania) with a group who were all from the Western US (mostly Washington and California). The guide explains how the Confederate army came in from the mountains. We all start looking around in different directions, and finally somebody asks "where are the mountains?" The guide points at some rolling hills... we weren't trying to be snarky, just had a different idea about the definition of mountain... like the base elevation of mountain is higher than the highest point in the whole state of PA.

...and why a Moto Guzzi? nothing beats the feel of the Guzzi engine under full load climbing a mountain. For example, this is a mountain. Feels like summer at the base, but winter at the summit.

    IMG_9213.jpg

    • Highest point in Pennsylvania = 3,200 Feet
    • Lowest point in Great Basin National Park (Nevada) > 6,000 feet
    • Mountain Peaks in background > 13,000 feet.

I’ve been wondering why the front end felt awkward in the corners for a month or so- adjusting the suspension didn’t seem to help a great deal.  Turns out the front wheel bearings have a bit of play in them so changing them is today’s job.  That along with tyre pressures I think is crucial.

In the middle of replacing the petcock I had ordered back in late 2017, and casually decided to look at this thermistor/fuel level sensor also.

Just had to order one of these from Curtis at Harper's as it's out of stock at Stein Dinse.  Prices have gone up...was $104, now $260...rare part indeed, but he has a couple available in case anyone needs one.

As I'm deep into a tank off exercise, I noticed the black wire had disconnected at the plastic plate area, the gray/whitish wire was hanging on by a thread, and all of the plastic shrink wrap was brittle and hardened.  Time to refresh, along with a couple of other parts.

Amazing what one finds when going thru with a fine tooth comb doing the Tank Off exercise.

indeed. everything that was originally plastic on my monza is now a fine, black sandy substance.  curse ye father time!!
