Just proves to show that Norwegians are bloody loaded! Anywhere else in the world you would have a ferry crossing. Not jealous....not all..

Norway is one of the most beautiful places to visit; the countryside is a bit like BC, Canada with endless roads and beautiful fiords. Mindtaking scenery is to expect; only make sure tha your creditcard is loaded. Have never ever visited such an expensive countr before!

A couple of years ago Sue and I were planning to ferry to Bergen taking the tandem. Train up towards Hardangervidda plateau getting off at Myrdal then riding down the track that follows the railway to Flåm, a fabulous ride that I did years ago, about 20 miles if I remember and all downhill. Then the fast ferry back through the fjords to Bergen. We got saved up and then Fjordline stopped the service. Thought we could use the DFDS to Christiansand and they stopped that too. So it looks like we might do 2012 but as Søren says 'very expensive'

There must be too much heavy traffic to make a ferry practical for that spot, so the investment in the bridge was worthwhile. Either that or traffic is so infrequent as to make a ferry non-self-supporting. :huh2:

Be nice if one of the Norwegian brethren could chime in here but I don't really think economics could justify some of the massive infrastructure spending in the last 20 years. Some of the tunnels are astonishing. :o
