v11sport...shaftdrive

Hey Guzzi's,

I have a 2000 v11sport that I've just torn down to a frame and engine.

All in the name of powder-coating, anodizing, and paint.

In the process, I discoverd how much I like the way she looks without

the "Knuckle Flanges" / shaft-drive Guards. Gives her that striped factory

racer look. And I'm seriously thinking about keeping them off.

But... saftey. I'd like to know if this is something I can live with-out.

Besides the obvious saftey of fingers (maintance/cleaning) and shoe-laces.

Are there any other saftey issues? Is there any history of Shaft-drive exploding

on the fly? Are the chances low enough to live without them?

I love the way she looks, but I'd hate to be flying through one of my favorite

sweepers and have the shaft snap and lock into my rear wheel or fly into me.

Let me know, and please ask as many Guzzi'ist you know or have them email me.

Contact me here or email me at: jedione68@msn.com

Thanks

The shoelaces thing would scare me. Plus any road debris you may run into or over. Of course its up to you, just like wearing a helmet I guess.

Richard,

Thanks for getting back to me. The EATTEN shoe-laces

I can live with. Its the idea of bottoming or over extending

the suspension and having the shaft come apart and hitting

the wheel, swing arm and ah... crashing that scares me.

Cant see what difference it would make, I plan to remove mine when I give the bike a tidy up over winter. I suppose there is a small chance that joint could break up, but this should be spotted during routine maintainance. I cant see the shaft comin apart on full travel.

Thanks guys,

Out of bordom waiting for my parts to come back, I went out into the garage

and did a mach up with the guards in place. I found that the rear one doesn't

even cover the knuckle, so out with that worry. On the front one coming off the

tranny, it does cover the knuckle, but the way the swing-arm is designed,

it act's like a guard of its own. So bye bye shoe-laces and hello Bare Knuckles.

Again, thanks for advice and replies. Jedione68

I'm going to guess that the guards are there primarily to limit grease fling.

Guzzi's,

I'm pretty sure at this point your right, thier there to catch GREASE.

Also, I found this great local machinest, who I had take some metal

out of the Bevel Drive. Looks wicked. Looks like a vent-dryclutch/rotors.

He did a great job.

And of course I'll send in some photo's as the bike comes back together.

FWIW

I'll betcha Guzzi's Lawyers had them put those on, not to catch the grease, but to catch the shaft when the U-joint comes apart.

True, the swingarm and Pork Chops add some protection, but ouch! I can just imagine it coming apart without those guards in place!

Yah, only one in 10 Million Guzzi miles might be effected by this, but you might end up dead if you are the chosen one.

That being said, if I was racing, I sure would take off the rear guard to reduce unsprung weight. But in racing you have a pit stop.

In touring I have learned to ignore noises and vibration, thinking oh, it is just the road surface or more Guzzi "character"...not wise.

For touring, I'll keep them on....unless your pics just look waaaayyyy toooooo cool, and I am sure they will be temptingly cool looking :P

Y2K v11,

I'm pretty much with ya on the lawyers making Guzzi do the right thing.

But the pork-chops and the swing-arm are way stronger that the little tin cup.

And the one I was scared of, the rear one, the cute little guard doesn't even

cover the Knuckles. So if she goes, she goes with or with-out she goes, Oh No.

On a much lighter and fail safe note, I had an engineer do some beautiful

massagesing to my rear Bevel drive. Sure I could say I lost a few unsprung mass and now she's faster. But honestly, it looks just amazing. Looks like a ventilated-

cluth cover and or rotor. You'll like.

Peace,

Well seriouslly I don't know where the heck are these things on a V11 , OK I don't have a V11 but is there a difference with mine ,... at least.

Thanks
