Second my own principle I am not greeting none cops on the bike.

Last week I have got a very nice surprise, In the small place/town I work, I was riding on my bike and I saw a cop coming in the other direction. This guy/woman, give me a greeting with his left hand…… :o

This event never happen to me in 40 year I am on this world. I never heard from friends this have happen to them or to anyone I know or they know. I was shocking. :ninja::ninja::ninja:

Well, I am now on guard for some situation like this.

I repeat, I will not greeting none cop in uniform.

Except martin… ;)

Do you guys have had a situation like mine?

Bike cops in my neck of the woods greet all the time:

"Hello Jaap, your driver's licence and registration again please."

And I always greet them back: "Hi Jan, how have you been since last week?"

Seriously, bike cops do greet over here, but not all of them.

Motorcycle cops are now pretty rare in these parts- maybe Martin can confirm but I think its down to all the money they spend on speed cameras which are good at handing out tickets but are not good at stopping drivers / riders who have been drinking over the limit or on drugs.

When you do meet one while riding they will normally nod at you, and sometimes if you are sharing a lay bay or car park they wll come over for chat as many are bikers themselves out of uniform.

Both the speeding tickets I have been issued in the last 15 years have been from sneaky unmarked cars not bikes and after a few trouble fee years I got one from a camera last year when my V11 had a broken speedo- still my fault of course.

Be nice to them - they may catch the uninsured drugged up driver who may have knocked you off othewise.

Leading on from TX Lego Village People Do you have Lego in the US?

We do use bikes, mainly for escort duties and such. We will put out bikes additional to the regular cars but only if numbers permit. Bikes are excelent in some areas but not so good in others. Can't box in during a pursuit. Don't carry any equipment, can't be sole vehicle on any incident left in the carriageway. Just asking to be mown down by myopic car driver. We also have plain bikes. I think the motorcycle cop is the ultimate traffic enforcement tool as far as regular people go. You get stopped, he puts the bike on the stand and strides towards you removing his gloves, Boy are you in it :D

Our focus as far as traffic cars is ANPR driven, we have ANPR squads and therefore only have very limited "normal" Traffic, so the bikes are a luxury.

We have new powers of removal for no insurance and driving licence offences. That with the new insurance and driving licence data bases mean we tow loads of vehicles daily.

And Guy I see your "toads" are haphazard. I line mine all up in rows, perhaps my sons autism is genetic and not just a result of prematurity :P

I have a haphazard brain Martin.

I spent a couple of weeks a few years back redecorating a school for kids with autism and aspergers syndrome and I can understand what a challenge it must be bringing a child up, which I am sure you do well at.

Motorcycle cops in Atlanta are abundant -- all over the place.

Most wave back -- almost all of them can ride the wheels off. I try to view them as my friends until they prove otherwise.

On an aside, I ALWAYS wave back to kids in cars who wave at me. Doesn't cost a thing and gives them positive reinforcement that not all bikers are thugs. Think about when you were a kid and you'd give truckers the "honk your horn" sign -- and they did.

My point, I guess, is that I'm going to be as pleasant as possible to everyone while cycling not only to help the image of motorcyclists everywhere -- but because it is the right thing to do.

The only CONSTANT request I get from kids -- especially in the "hood" where I live -- is to wheelie -- "That thing go twelve O' Clock?" Just shake my head and wave...

I am a motor cop in Santa Barbara, and whether or not I wave is dependant on several things, such as whether or not my left hand is operating the headset microphone, traffic, etc. Being the small town that it is and the fact that I ride off-duty (both my V11 and my Road King) I have gotten to know most of the motorcyclist in town and routinely will either nod or wvae at them.

By the way, getting paid to ride is probably the best job in the world! Its just those damn car drivers.....

Well, somebody has to do it, so it might as well be me!! We still ride those dinosaur Kawasaki's but the word is that we may be getting the Honda ST1300's within the next year (but with the way the city works, who knows?). Funny thing is, the Kawasaki's are pretty good work bikes and can really take a beating.

Just depends on the cops, I think. Even Italian cops can be pretty cool. These folks were very friendly when we met them in Milan. They even pulled some guy over (that's his bike) and made him take pictures of us all. It really depends on where you are. Here in Iowa City it's weird- IC is a small University town, so it has the typical 'student vs. townie' mentality. Every cop I've met here thinks that the students are guilty of malfeasance every time, all the time. I think the police are just bored.

But mainly, I'm with V50man- I wave at kids, other bikers, cops, even farmers out on their tractors. It's good publicity.

Edit- thanks to a fellow member for reminding me these were patrol officers, not Carabinieri....
