Found doing a Tranny cover/Pawl spring inspection

Anybody know what this is? Found it at the bottom of the tranny after removing cover.Could it be from the cover assembly,or elsewhere?

Good news is that fluid looked healthy,PO must have changed it when replacing pawl spring.Spring and internals looked good and felt tight. The shift linkage shaft/axle that goes through the pork chop was awfully dry, assuming that should have a good coat of grease on it?

Also any suggestions or tips re-resembling selector wheels ,et all would be appreciated.Think I got it but wouldn't mind anyone's 2cents before I close it up .

Thanks,

Michael

It looks like the pin that stands in the upper "toothed gear" of the shift mechanism. See Section N, pg. 26, of the Workshop Manual.

Looks like it's shown on C9 of the parts pdf (no idea how to post that image).

It wouldn't be a magnet by any chance?

Sometimes one is fitted to the drain plug to catch any stray iron floating around.

I'm still not sure whether it fits into a hole in the cover. Maye one of our shift cover specialists would chime in? BFG or baldini?

Before i re fitted the plate i put the gear lever on it and shifted the mechanism to make sure i had 1 down 5 up and not 2 down 4 up or something else <_>

Docc is right; it is the mentioned pin.

BTW, I have two spare ones, so if any of you guys need one just let me know.

If that is a pin from the top selector wheel, it does not locate in the cover, it moves with the wheel. These are the rollers that the pawl arm acts on to move wheel. MZNYC: If that is one of the rollers from the selector wheel, not sure how it came to be in the bottom of the casing? When cover is removed, selector mechanism comes with it, wheels are retained by circlips, & as I recall those rollers would stay located in wheel. Are you sure it is one of the 5 rollers? Bikes have a pin fitted in cover that limits pawl arm movement.

Attached pic shows wheels aligned for neutral. Short spaced indent (between 1st & 2nd) behind top wheel is selected by mechanism. Some wheels have factory punch marks, mine didn't, I marked with paint dots. You can see 5 rollers located in lower half of central portion of top wheel. Selector forks should be centred (equal spaces either side) on shafts.

Should it be this ?

I think so. Guzzi parts diagram doesn't show it. This part can fall out when cover plate is detached, as rollers wouldn't. It's easy to check anyhow, this is a hollow, rolled pin.

You can see where the pin comes from in Slaveks pic, In the upper cog inner circle you can see 5 pins (well half of each of them). One of mine fell out, when i lifted out the cog when i was changing my spring as well, just pop it back in and all is well.

It is a rolled pin.I tried to put it in that hole by hand but didn't have enough clearance but very close.Looks like it may need a little tap to get it in.Defiantly not one of the selector wheel rollers, way too big.

Any thoughts on greasing the linkage shaft?Felt like it a had grease on it at one time but was awfully tacky to the touch when disassembling.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Got cover back on and couldn't get her to shift.Took it off re-assembled and was able to get her to shift up/down albeit a little stiff but equate that to just having shifter collar on external shaft to check movement.Once I get linkage back on with some adjustments I'm hoping all will be well.

Coupla things though.Your selector wheels are different than mine.Mine have teeth all the way around the wheel.Mine are also pretty much solid in that channel on top of the wheel whereas yours has some gaps in there.Maybe US/Euro difference?

I also have the factory indents but they don't line up in neutral,I think that photo was in 1st position. With the bottom wheel positioned with it's neutral indent and neutral sensor lined up the dot on top of the wheel is slightly off to the left as is the top wheel.

Normal?

...Your selector wheels are different than mine....

I think Emry explains this ....

I work with an individual that worked with Guzzi from around 99~04. When I told him I own an 02 Scura, he laughed and asked if I rode it. He was quite serious....

Seems to me, at that time, parts were probably redesigned & sourced on the hoof with no coherent plan. I guess if it works, fine. As you say, looks like your marks coincide with 1st, tho why this would be when mechanism is fitted with neutral selected Lord only knows  I wonder which was the modified/later design; yours appears to be heavier... Function? Just cheaper to machine less teeth?:huh2: Anyone else got same? What # is your Scura?

Re: Grease - you mean external linkage? yeah, clean & grease.
