I've had my eye on the Griso for a while, now. I've never owned a new bike, only second hand (or third, or forth, or who knows).

It makes me sad that MG stopped producing them. Some shops around me have some new ones left, but I can't afford them at the time.

Is the one you bought a roller motor?

    Ciao

I'm not sure what you mean by "roller motor."

  3. These last few "Post a pic" are among the best ever posted, IMHO.

Here's a V11 that would not be on The Angeles Crest without this community.

Thanks so much for posting these great images, thelonewonderer!

Along with the skills and perseverance of :notworthy: that Burgundy V11's Caretaker!

You're absolutely right, docc. If it wasn't for this community, that engine would still be on my workbench.

I've been teaching myself how to work on motorcycles for a while, now, and this has been the most welcoming and helpful online community that I've come across.

    Cheers, everyone!

I have yet to see the burgundy/purple tank in person. How would you describe it? Seems like the interesting V11 colors look very different in real life. The previous owner swapped out the purple tank on my bike for a silver one. Kinda wish I had the purple tank.

Btw, the silver forks look really nice on the black frame/engine bike. I might have to do this mod since I have a set.

I really like the burgundy tank. It seems to have different shades, depending on how the light catches it.

Here's another pic, but in some light this go 'round (don't mind the weirdo in the photo). 36a630276cf0ff59036e52ad6aa0db80.jpg

She's shifting fine! Thanks for all the help, and for digging up that picture, docc. I'd buy you a beer if I could! :bier:

Ok, sooo . . . just to clarify: you adjusted the shift mechanism and that took care of the problem entirely?
    Yes, that did it.

  6. Now mate this isnt going to be another "rebuilt V11 Sport wont start" 10 pager that ends with "I pulled it all apart found nothing wrong, put it back together and its fine now" deal is it.

    Ciao

Maybe! My workbench misses having an engine on it.

Other than the obvious oil leak, how does this look? 8aab92abe446f0fd5ca830a0cd58e5e4.jpg

I had a shifting problem once because the nut on the forward heim joint was hitting the starter. I turned it around so the screw head faced the starter and the problem was solved.

It's great when a fix can be as simple as that!

Looking at the picture that docc posted versus my setup, I'm growing more hopeful that this could be a simple solution, too.

The bike has been out of commission for over three years, and I barely got to ride it before the engine needed rebuilt, but I do remember there being some shifting issues back then.

1/4" is a lot of play. It will be worth grooming that mechanism. I am looking for the image of the "parallelogram." Quite possible that when you are trying to shift 4->3, 3->2 that the foot lever is striking the sideplate.

You can probably wiggle the gearbox into each gear by pulling the clutch lever, working the shift lever, and rocking the rear wheel back and forth.

(yep, that take three hands or two monkeys and a small boy, whichever comes first . . .)

I'm out of daylight and my power is still out, so I'll have stop for the night.

I'll see if I can convince my girlfriend to rock the rear wheel for me tomorrow. A girlfriend is as good as two monkeys, right?

The two "arms" (one on the gear box, the other on the foot lever) should be parallel. This is accomplished by shortening the connecting rod length. This also adjust the height of the foot lever off of the sideplate. Rotating the pawl arm connected to the gearbox might be necessary to get it all into fine fettle.

Also, you are missing a lock nut on the forward Heim joint.

How much "play" in the foot lever when you wiggle it around?

PS: Check the gap under the foot lever when it is pressed fully down in various gears. Make sure it is going completely into gear, and look for the gap under the foot lever. (You can see where it has hit and chipped the red away).

There is about 1/4" play in the foot lever.

I can't shift higher than 2nd without the engine running.

  10. A lot of shifting issues get solved by adjusting the linkage, without getting into the transmission. Make sure everything is snug and has enough free travel

    .. gap between lever and `pork chop`when downshift ?

    -KG-

There is a gap between the lever and porkchop.

When the engine was out was the transmission separated from the engine?

How was the hub, may be sticking. If the clutch was out was it correctly installed?

When giving it gas and it is hung up does it slam in gear?

The engine was separated from the transmission.

The clutch was out, but reinstalled correctly.

It doesn't slam into gear. It's actually pretty gentle.

  12. In 6 posts, all of the simple and straightforward approaches are noted. Definitely, do these things first (especially tuning the foot shift lever and mechanism).

This is how my Sport behaved when the retention safety washer on the gearbox input hub failed and the hub had moved out to disengage the clutch inadvertently.

Let's hope for shift lever adjustment! :luigi:

Power is out in half my apartment, including the garage, so I haven't been able to take a look at anything yet. Instead, I've been looking through a lot of threads about shifting issues.

I read about what you mentioned above, docc. Man, that was some problem! My input hub and flywheel looked great a week ago when I reinstalled the engine, so I'm hoping it's not as major as what you had to deal with.

I'm glad I don't have the aluminum flywheel, and that my clutch plates looked good.

Out of curiosity, if I had bad clutch springs, what would the symptoms be?
